Why? ;)

I can't say for sure (newer versions aren't out yet), but probably not.
Removing packages before upgrading is typically only necessary when there is
a radical change in a package or there has been a problem with the package's
spec file.

It never hurts to back up your configuration files as a safety net, but it
should not be absolutely necessary (in theory). At times though, there have
been problems with configuration files being replaced by an upgrade. These
cases have been corrected over time, and are less of an issue as time goes by.

In the case of clamav, it used to be a good idea to do this so that virus
definitions would be preserved. Beginning with 0.90 though, the way that
these definitions are stored was changed substantially, making it a bad idea
to restore those files from a pre-0.90 (or 0.90rc) version.

Could you tell more about the reasons behind these changes (I'm still
upgrading manually):

Are you saying that now with newer versions than 0.90.1-1.3.11 one
don't have to remove clamav before upgrading?

And what is the reason for backing up / restoring /usr/share/clamav, is this
something that I should do when manually upgrading?

George,

I'd really like to have some more info on this. I can't see how qtp-newmodel
could be installing 2 different versions at the same time. When
qtp-build-rpms is finished in the sandbox, qtp-newmodel removes the
/usr/src/qtp-upgrade/RPMS directory and recreates it, then copies packages
individually from the sandbox into this directory, based on the package list
that was selected. This is the directory from which the packages are updated
(in one fell swoop). The only way I can see that two different versions
could be updated is if the package was selected twice, and I can't see how
that could happen either.

Can you check back through your /usr/src/qtp-upgrade/SRPMS/newmodel-list*
files and see if there are any duplicate entries in one of the files? Please
let me know what you find so I can track this down.

I'd still like the details on this too when you get a chance.

Thanks.

I'm glad.

I'm guessing that might happen if there was a successful build but the
install failed and the sandbox wasn't rebuilt. I'll have a look to be sure
things are cleaned out when there are problems.

I didn't notice this, and it concerns me. The version checking/comparison in
qtp-newmodel isn't very robust (yet), and adding or removing a '-' might
hose it up. Could you be more specific here?

What extras? Should they maybe be included in the stock toaster?

How so? Is it something that can/should be fixed?

I thought this was SOP on a toaster. ;)

Thanks George.

That'll solve the issues I was having with clam too. For some reason it was
installing .10 and .11 at the same time (when upgrading). The versions of
the past 2 versions changed their syntax slightly (switching "." and "-").

I've been fighting issues where multilog can't write to the /var/log/qmail
tree, but figured it out this AM. I was looking at permissions, but didn't
look at /var itself. It'd been changed to being owned by vpopmail.vchkpw
... nasty surprise! I didn't find anything which caused it either, but now
the logging works. I am a bit puzzled why we don't use some of the
daemontools features still (svcscanboot). Without readproctitle running
it's tough to troubleshoot when you don't have logs. I made a custom rpm
for daemontools to get some extras.

Off to fix /etc/hosts now so imap will work (happens every time on a new
install when i deploy to a pub ip)
