Hi Stuntman,

I'm not sure what the CPI increase will be yet but I know it's nowhere close to 17%.  I've checked on the Medicare-approved drug discount card (not eligible for $600 credit) and the best deal the Web Site can find for my meds is $10 HIGHER than what I pay now, and that's ONLY if I pay the $30 for the card FIRST.

I'm not on SSI and buy generic when possible.  I'm not in a panic but if my SSDI check gets the 17% Medicare taken out I'll be making less on my check next year than this.

I live in Texas and for many years the Republican party in this state acted relatively reasonable and moderate until they became the dominant party. They have become increasingly radical and unreasonable.
They are now the party of able-bodied, heterosexual, protestant Christian, Caucasian men that have jobs or large inheritances. If you do not fit into all of these categories then please think carefully before you cast your ballot for a Republican.

Curious, so I went to the Texas Republican

http://www.texasgop.org/library/RPTPlatform2004.pdf
Page 14 of the Platform - "The Party
supports amendment of the Americans with Disabilities Act to exclude from its
definition those persons with infectious diseases, substance addiction, learning
disabilities, behavior disorders, homosexual practices and mental stress,
thereby reducing abuse of the Act."

It seems quite different to say "supports
amendment ... to exclude from its definition ..." than to say "calls for the
immediate removal of ..."  I do not know if there have been attempts to use
the ADA for protection based upon homosexual practices.  There may have
been.  If so, supporting amendment to exclude those from the definition
would be a means of clarifying the intent.  If not, it would seem to be an
unnecessary amendment.  But the tone of the Democratic article was
certainly different from the tone of the actual words of the Texas GOP platform
and seems to be politics as usual.

What will they do next? read on:

TEXAS GOP PLATFORM CALLS FOR DISMANTLING OF THE ADA
Targeting People with Disabilities During an Election Year

(August 3, 2004) Your action is urgently needed to contact President Bush and the Texas Republican Party and tell them to reverse their call for an amendment to the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) which would eliminate protections for millions of citizens with disabilities.

The platform politicizes the ADA, a nonpartisan law, by trying to associate it with hot button issues and seeking to "exclude" categories that are NOT covered by the ADA such as "homosexual practices" and "current illegal substance abuse."

Furthermore, the platform goes after those that are currently the most disenfranchised citizens in our country - children with learning and behavioral disabilities, individuals with HIV, and those with mental disabilities. (And of course it's not as though Congress hadn't already thought about coverage of people with mental disabilities and infectious diseases when they passed the ADA - at the time there were proposed amendments to exclude people with mental disabilities & HIV that were soundly defeated.)

Page 14 of the 2004 Texas State Republican Party Platform reads:

Americans with Disabilities Act - The Party supports amendment of the Americans with Disabilities Act to exclude from its definition those persons with infectious diseases, substance addiction, learning disabilities, behavior disorders, homosexual practices and mental stress, thereby reducing abuse of the Act.

The entire document is available online in PDF at:
http://www.texasgop.org/library/RPTPlatform2004.pdf

What You Can Do:

- Use the information below to contact President Bush (whose own father
signed the ADA into law), the Platform Committee Chair, and the Republican
Party of Texas.

- Tell them to take this divisive and bigoted proposal out of the Texas
Republican Party Platform!

- With the ADA being weakened in the courts, with growing waiting lists for
mental health services, and with millions of Americans with disabilities
needlessly forced to live in institutions, ask them why they are targeting
some of America's most disenfranchised citizens during this election year.

Re: [QUAD-L] ADA destruction

2004-09-09 Thread River Wolfe
Of course it's not a disability, which is why this is so absurd. In no
way shape or form does the ADA protect gays and lesbians. The Texas
Republican party is attacking the ADA and trying to dismantle it bit by
bit, this is one of their tactics. By spreading the rumor that the ADA
somehow protects gays and lesbians, they further discredit the ADA and
what it is meant to be. Voter who don't even know what the ADA is, and
aren't likely to investigate for themselves, hear that it protects gays
and lesbians and then they support ANY efforts to dismantle the ADA.

If you received my post last month about the ADA being under attack in
TX you can see what they're doing. I'll look for it and send it out
again.

I ended up having to stay overnight for monitoring and they pumped me full of I.V. antibiotics.  They sent me home with more antibiotics (Cipro) and some pain meds.  It wasn't too painful but I felt I had been karate kicked in the bladder.  It is better now but still a little uncomfortable.

Stacy, did your Urologist approve the suprapubic?  How long have you had your Foley?  I have had mine 9 years but was told that as a female long time Foley I would leak urine from my bladder with a suprapubic.  Anybody have any info on this?  Any females out there have them after having a Foley for a long time?

Has Gabe had a pneumonia vaccine shot? If not, it would be a good idea to get one but check with his Dr. first about it. While this pneumonia was picked up in the hospital, do you have any advice on prevention.(besides stay out of the hospital) This has been the current planGabe is busy and moving, his suite has a HEPA filter and humidifier with eucalyptus oil in it.  A real basic respiratory therapy happens 2 x a day. Anything else?

Bowel motility. The painful swollen gut. complicated by a partial bowel obstruction. Gabe usually has shakes, smoothies or yogurt. Stuff that's easy on the gut. reduce air whenever possible. However a guys got to eat a burger now and then.  He uses Miralax, Citrucel and uses a biscodyl mini enema (30cc) 2x aday. The gut still grows. Any ideas? ( We have used fleets basic enema, digital stimulation, bycodyl supp, glycerin supp)

McAuliffe to Bush: Renounce Texas' anti-gay, anti-disability GOP platform

Washington, D.C. - Today Democratic National Committee (DNC) Chairman Terry McAuliffe called on President Bush to renounce language in the Texas Republican party platform calling for unnecessary and discriminatory changes in the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

The Texas platform inaccurately calls for the immediate removal of persons with "homosexual practices" from protection under the ADA. Since its passage in 1990, the ADA has clearly stated that sexual orientation is not a disability, and as such is not covered under the law.

"The Texas Republican party is changing facts in a blatantly homophobic attack against gay and lesbian Americans," said McAuliffe. "Republicans are abusing the ADA, which has guaranteed equal opportunity and access for millions of Americans, for their own political games.

"This platform does not represent the values of Texans just as it does not represent the values of the American people. George W. Bush must take a stand and renounce the discriminatory and divisive rhetoric coming from his own party in his own state."

  Hello again!

We left the list for a number of years. Now We're
back and I hope you still allow parents to participate. My son cannot
participate fully due to other disabilities. I will try and get him as
involved as he is willing too and can (This will be his decision)

My son's name is Gabe and I am Lana.  Gabe is 31 and
had his injury 9 years ago. The product of a surgery gone bad. He has a C-5
SCI. He lives with us. But has his own suite and 24-7 attendant care. He
comes and goes as he pleases.

We need help-advice on several things.

Gabe had pneumonia this summer for the first time. Hospital
acquired pneumonia (HAP) He went in for a simple procedure and ended up in
ICU. The question I have for you all is. While this pneumonia was picked up in
the hospital, do you have any advice on prevention.(besides stay out of the
hospital) This has been the current planGabe is busy and moving,
his suite has a HEPA filter and humidifier with eucalyptus oil in
it.  A real basic respiratory therapy happens 2 x a day. Anything
  else?

Bowel motility. The painful swollen gut. complicated by
a partial bowel obstruction. Gabe usually has shakes,
smoothies or yogurt. Stuff that's easy on the gut.
reduce air whenever possible. However a guys got to eat a burger now and
then.  He uses Miralax, Citrucel and uses a biscodyl mini enema
(30cc) 2x aday. The gut still grows. Any ideas? ( We have used fleets
basic enema, digital stimulation, bycodyl supp, glycerin supp)

  Thanks,
  Lana

<< How to call the police!

told him that he'd left the light on in the garden shed, which she could see from
the bedroom window. George opened the back door to go turn off the light but
saw that there were people in the shed stealing things.

He phoned the police, who asked, "Are any of those people in your house?" and
he said no. Then they said that all patrols were busy, and that he should
simply stay in his house, lock his doors and an officer would be along when
available.

George said,! "Okay," hung up, counted to 30, and phoned the police again.

"Hello I just called you a few seconds ago because there were people in my
shed. Well, you don't have to worry about them now cause I've just shot them
all". Then he hung up.

Within five minutes three police cars, an Armed Response unit, and an
ambulance showed up at the Phillips residence. Of course, the police caught the
burglars red-handed.

One of the Policemen said to George: "I thought you said that you'd shot
them!"

George said, "I thought you said there was nobody available!"
