I'm a para at T 7. I  have a long torso.  I do exercise.  I
push my chair a lot.  I'm up and down my ramp several times a day and it's
a fairly long ramp since my house is pretty high up because it's raised.  I
live near the ocean where the water table is high and flood concerns. Anyhow I
also push quite a bit at school and I diet.  I'm not small person
with a large bone structure.  I do have a belly.  My arms, legs, and
face are fairly thin but my belly is hard to get rid of. I have seen many
people in chairs that are thin but I think they are small people in
general.  I also think that if you don’t have a belly to begin with then
your chances are better but once you get one it's harder to get rid of it.
In my opinion.

I'm finely legally insured. I just got qualified
for Medicare and in my county in AZ once your on Medicare, there are 4 Insurance
Companies that you can join. You can stay on Medicare or pick one of the
Insurance Companies. They have better coverage and they can't say no. I've been
here for 9 months with my state covered insurance from another state thinking
I'm on an extended vacation. But now I'm good.
But what a hassle, going to the doc for the first
time to get everything set up... supplies, meds, etc. What's cool is all
supplies are covered 100%, except for the blue-pads (not covered at all) I use
for my B-P. But durable medical equipment I have to cover 20%. And prescriptions
are only $10, but only generic. I have to go in
again next week to get him to ok my pain meds, he wanted to get my old
records first. Plus I want to see if they will cover some velcro universal cuffs
and a writing pen holder that I put my fork in instead of a pen... works
great.
It looks like they will be pretty good and cover
lots of things. Plus there is no $500 a month premium I've been
paying.

I have to agree with LQ.  It is possible to prevent a quad gut by maintaining one's weight and posture.  When I was able to stay thin and wore an effective abdominal binder I did not have a quad belly for eight years.  My problems started when I was wearing an abdominal binder that had lost its elasticity.  Now I have a slight quad belly, but to me it is huge.  It is very difficult for quads like myself that have a voracious appetite to maintain weight, but I believe the abdominal binder is an essential part of preventing the quad belly.  However, not everyone is able to keep the quad belly at bay.  I know other quadriplegics that have maintained their weight and worn abdominal binders only to suffer the quad belly.  I would have to guess that well over 90% of quadriplegics will get a quad belly, but this is purely a guess on my part.Just my opinion, I could be wrong.Billy~LittleQuad~

Hi Stunt,

I do try to read the ''big city'' papers along with my home town paper.  Our hometown paper is owned by Scripps Howard News Service but is published by the Times Record News Staff of Wichita Falls.

I couldn't agree with you anymore about historical sites.  I've contributed to the Wichita County Heritage Society in their 6.2 million dollar restoration of the historical downtown Holt Hotel here in Wichita Falls.
http://www.timesrecordnews.com/trn/local_news/article/0,1891,TRN_5784_3953569,00.html

It appears as though Mr. Eastwood also agrees with us.

"I totally support the ADA laws. I think people not in complianceshould get into compliance," Eastwood said in a telephoneinterview Wednesday. But he added, "I think there should be abetter way to get people in compliance."  http://www.thefiringline.com/forums/showthread.php?t=36340

What Mr. Eastwood does have is a problem with are the lawyers filing suits under the ADA.  "It's a racket", opines Eastwood.  "The typical thing is to get someone who is disabled in collusion with sleazebag lawyers, and they file suits."  Eastwood told the WSJ he isn't quarreling with the ADA itself, and the proposed legislation would affect only future cases and not the one against him; but "I just think for the benefit of everybody, they should cut out this racket because these are morally corrupt people who are doing this." (Jim VandeHei, "Clint Eastwood Saddles Up for Disability-Act Showdown", Wall Street Journal, May 9 -- online subscribers only). http://overlawyered.com/archives/00may2.html#000518b

Here, I believe, both you and I agree with Mr. Eastwood.  Thousands of businesses have been hit with charges that their facilities are out of compliance with the ADA; most of the complaints can be traced to a small network of activists linked to lawyers who obtain legal fees typically in the thousands of dollars from defendants eager to settle.  These suits weaken the ability of any legitimate ADA lawsuits that do need to be addressed.  It is the way in which this problem should be resolved the the disagreement seems to play out.  One side see this as "a direct attack on the civil right of 56 million," the other side see it differently.  "We say; if there are problems with lawyers and their ethical practices, don't fix the problems by eroding the civil rights of people with disabilities!"

"This proposed amendment is a direct attack on the civil rights of 56 million Americans with disabilities and must be stopped," said the National Council on Independent Living (NCIL) in a March 30 press release. "We say; if there are problems with lawyers and their ethical practices, don't fix the problems by eroding the civil rights of people with disabilities!"
As HR 3690, the bill died quietly last year in spite of a great deal of attention given to it by the actor/director Clint Eastwood and, therefore, the mainstream media. In May, Eastwood testified before a U.S. House Judiciary Committee's Constitutional Subcommittee in support of ADA Notification. At that time, he was being sued by a woman who claimed that Eastwood's Mission Ranch Hotel in Carmel, California was not accessible to people who use wheelchairs. A jury in October determined that Eastwood was liable for three accessibility violations, but did not order him to pay damages. http://www.inclusiondaily.com/news/access/notification.htm#040401

Eastwood Found Liable For Not Providing AccessBy Dave Reynolds, Inclusion Daily ExpressOctober 2, 2000SAN JOSE, CALIFORNIA--On Friday, a jury decided that Clint Eastwood was liable for three violations regarding access at his Mission Ranch Inn, but did not order the actor/director to pay any damages to the woman who had sued him.
After four hours of deliberations, the jury announced the verdict, in which it found that Eastwood's resort should provide a ramp to the registration office, a second accessible guest room and signs about the accessible restrooms -- which are 234 feet away. Eastwood said those changes are already "in the    works". http://www.inclusiondaily.com/news/access/notification.htm#100200

Under the ADA, disabled plaintiffs cannot recover damages when they file lawsuits to force businesses to comply with the law, but their attorneys can collect legal fees, so it is the lawyers making the money.  Are ALL lawsuits filed against businesses bad or wrong?  The more I've thought about it, the more I'm persuaded that businesses should have an opportunity to fix any accessibility problems before they're sued for noncompliance.  Yes, businesspeople should learn more about the ADA before they condemn it.  But the fact is, many lawyers are abusing the act, and that not only weakens the ADA, it casts those of us with disabilities as being for the ADA for reasons more than equal rights. IMHO, the truth lies somewhere between the two sides.  I think the 'article' below states my feelings pretty good.  I hope everyone will take the tim

It all depends if you have a large or small belly when you get hurt.

There is some truth to that. But I would seriously consider working out with
a
trained body and strength coach. Eliminate, anything in your diet that is
"White"
sugars, flours and ice cream. Workouts should test your mind and body without
damage to your system. Muscle fatigue is most important when buidling muscle
and ridding excess fat. You will know when you are getting there.

I think quad-guts are mostly on C5's and higher. At least the C6's I know
can push their own manual chairs and have more stomach muscles. As a C5 there
are not many exercises I can do. Other than lift my arms high and swing them
around. I've used weights, but 1 pound and I can't do it much. I try and twist
my body as fast and much as I can, but in 15 seconds I'm out of breath and
dizzy.

i disagree.in my 7 years i've stayed thin and managed to avoid a quad stomach... also if you keep bowels rather clean you may not look extra fluffy...

Same here Lori, my only sore has been in the crease between
leg, causing a moisture/yeast type sore. Doctor gave me 2 types of creme to
clear it up.but we always have to keep an eye on it and if it starts
getting red again I use the creme.I think its a steroid type rub on
creme.

In my experience green tea will really clean you out and keep you pretty
regular, hot or cold. I also use H-wave or a TNS unit and I haven't had to use
any kind of pill or Fleet enema for at least two years.

[QUAD-L] About internet business

2005-08-05 Thread wheelchair
Even during the best of times, 50% failure rate in business is the standard.
The
reasons vary. Most or many of Internet business don't/can't offer or claim
huge
profits, because they can't, by law.
Starting and operating business, are like having and raising children, a 24
hour job of
constant management. Those who are ill prepared are doomed, early. At the
end of
every business day, comes the paperwork. The weekly stats, the monthly
stats, the year-end stats.
Consider, that almost anyone can run a mile, but very, very few can do it in
record time.
Kinda like the difference between "The Chicken and The Pig" in relation to
your
breakfast enjoyment. The Chicken offers you a daily contribution, and does
it well.
But The Pig, has made a commitment to your breakfast satisfaction! There
lies the difference.
Think Well Do Well!
Best Wishes,
W
