[QUAD-L] Pain and AD
I have posted several times about Gabe, my son and a problem that he is having with autonomic dysreflexia (AD) and pain. It started with AD in the late afternoon and some bladder and bowel spasms would follow. The Ad would resolve when he would lay down. Now he has serious pain. We have been to all the doc’s. The urologist says he has two kidney stones. One in each kidney. She thinks they are to small to cause the problem, but says it’s possible. Neurosurgeon says his shunts are ok and he does not think anything in the spine could cause this. The abdominal ct shows a small gall stone in the neck of the gall bladder. The surgeon doubts it’s the cause. So I started thinking about when was the last time Gabe had pain like this. It was before he got his baclofen pump and the central cord pain, skin pain and spasms about killed him. He got a new pump last summer and almost died from an allergic reaction to an antibiotic. So he went two months last summer without his pump when he was in the hospital. He was drugged on morphine for most of the time. He was too ill from the allergic reaction to replace the pump. So his baclofen pump dose now is a lot lower then it was before last summer. So the question is…. could the pain that is going on now be central cord pain and the AD be a response to the central cord pain. I’ve made an apt for him to see his rehab doc. Until then I’m going to give him oral baclofen everyday as an experiment. What do you guys think? I’m asking you guys because Gabe can’t tell me everything that’s going on. When it comes to this problem he can just tell me about the pain. Help! Gabe’s mom

I worked for an ILC for 7 yrs and a girl who was hired the same time as me became somewhat of a "Boss's Pet." She was never caught but I'm fairly sure she took taxi-cabs to 'so called clients' when she really used it for her own transport and putting it on the ILC account. I also used to see her get "real chummy" with "clients" and then have them run errands for her ... like picking up prescriptions for her or this or that. Not that it matters but her disability was "Brittle Bone" disease known as Osteogenesis Imperfecta. The "Imperfecta" part suited her character ... lol. I'm sure she got away with a ton of things but 'proving it' then was difficult with her being the boss' pet! Make a stable hook or bolt to the arm of your chair, find a lead that gives the dog enough length to stay away from your wheels, but not so long that they will stick their noses where it does not belong!. They will teach themselves to stay away from the wheels. Teach them not to pull, by stopping everytime time they do pull and wait several seconds. They will want to "go", so should learn quickly that if they do not pull, they get to go. Be consistant!! Don't let a group of girls oggle over him and let him lick and jump and act like a numbskull. First! The girls must ask to pet him. Unfortunately a lot of people do not know or do that The dog must sit, then one by one they can come up and pet the dog. Then when he has met all of them, and he has kept his manners, then a petting session can proceed. Let them ask why you are so stern--duh, the dog is 'yours', not their play toy. They do not know the dog, the dog does not know them. Plus its a good training exercise and the dog becomes a well mannered pet, not a raving maniac! EVERYTHING in it's way (that has often been built near the riverbed in the past 40 years) gets washed away like so many ping pong balls. The smaller washes are equally violent in a smaller way. [QUAD-L] Exercise
Any of you guys exercise much? I wonder if insurance will pay for one of those hand cycling things I am trying to do a little, but I can't move my arms much. My main exercise is just lifting and or swinging my arms as long as I can before I run out of breath or can't lift my arms anymore... Usually around 30-60 seconds. I also use a long rubber strap and try stretching it. My leg bag straps are perfect. I use to get ones that were like an elastic band, but they did not stretch much. My new brand has real rubber straps that stretch a lot. I tie the ends together and then connect them to get the length I want. I hook it on a door knob, or hook it on my armrest, etc. I double it sometimes. I also try twisting around lots and fast, but that gets me dizzy. Greg

Mullin Dear Smurf, While finishing my 6th month at the program, I am starting to realize that in order for me to go faster, further, and do it in a short period of time-my tricep workouts are going to have to become my new best friend. Although my number one goal is to rid myself of this wheelchair and live a functional lifestyle, it will never happen unless I first conquer this wheelchair and learn to live functionally in it. In order for me to get up small hills, bumps, or wheel on carpet-I must build my core stomach muscles and my tricep muscles. To do this, I must wheel myself everywhere I go (in and outside the gym). Because of this, it has made it a very frustrating month. After talking with Mr. Weber, he explained that I cannot get frustrated easily because all that is doing is teaching my body to shut down when meeting new challenges. I cannot get to the next level if I keep this up. I have to be mindful of my emotions and keep a cool head if I want to reach my goals. Since it has been six months, I have decided to do a recap of my accomplishments. I have rid myself of my electric wheelchair and I am knob free on my manual wheelchair. I can now fully feed myself and wheel over small bumps, carpets and small inclines. I no longer have blood pressure issues while standing up, and have gotten completely off all medications. Most important, I have gotten mentally stronger since I have started this program. I also want to take this time and congratulate Tucker Fife on standing up and taking his first steps without leg braces on. What a true inspiration it is to watch Tucker achieve his goals. Another person I want to congratulate is Julie for doing such an exceptional job in such a short period of time. I really am amazed at the progress one person can make when they set their mind to it. I want to take this moment to thank each and every one of you again for the support and prayers while I am on this journey. I made a personal decision to use my website as a medium to keep all informed on my progress. This is the best way for me to communicate with all of you and not forget anyone person.
