[QUAD-L] S-&-P - Telephones?
Good Evening - Anyone on the list have any firsthand eXperience/knowledge with devices which will turn on ceiling fans such as the one directly above my head? You know on the ceiling? Above my head... right above... Uh, OK... Unfortunately, it doesn't have a wall switch and so I'm not certain if any "Environmental Control" applications will be viable. Also, I've bEen using a Sip-&-Puff telephone system which I purchased sometime in the '80s from a company called: 'InvoTek' - Tom Jakobs, P.E. President - InvoTek, Inc. 1026 Riverview Drive Alma, AR 72921. They no longer sell nor service this particular unit. And, it's truly served its purpose, above and beyond... anyway, I just nEed a similar device with an emergency "Puff Switch" that can be utiliZed without spEaking in case of Ventilator disconnecti0n. It works by spEaking into a micr0phone and reQuesting a persons name and the number will be subseQuently dialed aut0matically. But, if by chance you're unable to spEak (Ventilator malfuncti0n) this is where the emergency "Puff Switch" can literally save your life! Especially, if you're alOne at night and the teleph0ne is your only lifeline. So, there yOu have it... Any hElp with these Q's will be grEatly appreciated! EnjOy yoUr evEning... I'm an incomplete para but have the same problems. My legs wouldn't go straight when I wanted them to or would shoot straight and lock when I wanted to bend them. I take 1200mg of neurontin 3x a day and 40mg of baclofen 3x a day. My doc started working zanelfex into it. When I saw the pain specialist, he put me on a low dose of methadone and it helped everything considerably. I still have pain but no where near as bad and helped my spasms. I saw a video of a quad transferring himself once but can't remember where. He had an L shaped transfer board and it had straps somehow. I think he slid his hands in the straps, transferred himself and picked his legs up w/the board. The video didn't show how he took his hands out of the straps or anything. It was a long time ago. It was before he got his baclofen pump and the central cord pain, skin pain and spasms about killed him. He got a new pump last summer and almost died from an allergic reaction to an antibiotic. Hi Paul, I am a C5/6 incomplete. I do have some triceps now through electric stimulation. At first I didn't have any. Do you have inervasion in your deltoids? I have been practicing slide - board transfers since I was able to sit up in rehab. Then I still needed assistance, but as a built-up my shoulders I needed less and less help. But I have heard of 5/6's becoming independent with a sideboard. I remember in rehab doing different exercises to build deltoids, there was one piece of equipment called a rick shaw, where you back in with a wheelchair and pushed down to lift weights behind you? If that makes sense. I'm still not completely independent, I still need a spotter and have been practicing with my physical therapists, using my leg straps, and have been about 50% successful at not needing any help. All of this sure beats using a lift. Hi Smurf, There are different reasons for developmental disorders, but the term generally refers to a condition where the brain has not developed correctly. Here is a Web Site that will explain some of the specific conditions. http://nindssearch.ninds.nih.gov/verity_web/templates/jsp/pages/search/public_graphical_internal_advanced.jsp?AdvQueryText=&QuerySubmit=true&Page=&CollectionSelection=1&Coll=NINDS_Internal&QueryText=Developmental+Disorders+ I hope this helps. :) With Love, CtrlAltDel aka DaveC4/5 Complete - 29 Years PostTexas, USA [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Do you know what it all means? Re: [QUAD-L] Alone at night
Silas, They started me by setting my ventilator on various settings to see if I could develop some use of my diaphragm. I was extremely fortunate to get the majority of my diaphragm to work properly. After being in rehab for about one week one of the respiratory therapists use the device he called a "T piece" which allowed me to breathe air from the room as well as some oxygen through my trachea. He explained to me this device was not used outside of the hospital, but I am sure it has now been manufactured by someone. I remember hearing him complained that his ideas have been usurped for a business opportunity. Anyway, between the ventilator settings and the T piece I was finally able to breathe without the aid of a ventilator. This process took approximately 3 1/2 months, but the individual in the bed next me was not able to wean using the same devices. This is not for everyone. It depends, like most everything, on the return.&n! bsp; However, if you are able to breathe for approximately four hours unassisted you might be able to be wean and is not you may also be a candidate for, excuse my ignorance for not knowing the proper name, breathing pacemaker -- like Christopher Reeve had installed.BillySilas Shelburne <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: Great Billy, How did they start the weaning process, I got up to 4hrs off the vent when I first got home then I went to see about having the probs installed. Yes I was on a ventilator for just over four months. The weaning process started once I arrived at the Tampa VA and I give 80% of the credit to the outstanding respiratory staff at the hospital. If it was not for them I would still be on a ventilator. No I do not do my own transfers and therefore I do require assistance daily. No I do not need to be suctioned anymore. After weaning, they left the trachea tube in my throat for just about one month longer, waiting until my secretions diminished to the point where they could finally removed the tube. Now if I have secretions I need to do quad coughs, but hopefully that does not occur very often. As for my daily requirements: I usually have someone come in the late morning and give me up. They perform all of my daily rituals and make sure I have everything set up and give me lunch. My mother or father usually come over at dinner, but not always. I then have someone who arrives very late at night and puts me to bed, once again! ! setting everything up so I have control. I have an ECU which operates my equipment and telephone and I additionally have a rotating mattress. I have been able to set up a makeshift method to take my medication, so I don't need anybody in the very early morning. Obviously I am my maintenance, but it is important for me to be a self-sufficient as humanly possible. BillySilas Shelburne <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: Hey Billy, Were you ever on a vent? I also have an extensive support system, which many other people are not able to get. There is no way I would have been able to accomplish this earlier due to complications with catheters kinking, needing additional water, and general anxiety. I have had frequent problems with my catheter plugging and thus have had to call for help in the middle of the night. What I typically do is assess each problem which I have and then determine what course of action I will take to rectify this difficulty. If it is something that I need to have done, but is not an absolute emergency then I'll call a member of my family, depending on which one is available. If it is an emergency I feel can be rectified easily and one of my neighbors can handle it, I will call in a friend and have them handle the situation for m! ! ! e. Obviously all emergencies which cannot be handle quickly I need to call 911. The closest family members I have are approximately 20 minutes away, but my well-trained family members are about 20 to 25 minutes away. However, I know a lot of people with and parents of individuals with developmental disabilities that are fighting to get better services for all, including people with SCI. They do not put down people with SCI. They work side by side with them. We have a great coalition of people and agencies that are banding together to resolve services for everyone. Take care Dana, Mark ---Original Message--- From: Dana Miller Date: 08/21/05 14:38:53 To: quad Subject: [QUAD-L] Must go for a while I just have too much stuff on my plate right now to stay on all my lists. Plus all the others are on yahoo and that takes longer to do those than the outlook express page. I will miss all the goodies and info from this list, but I will be back. Everyone take care!
