Everyone always quits in the end!

Yeah but  I had to practically die to do it. Some people don't get a second chance but at least they'll finally quit!

You know alcohol is by far a lot worse than smoking it's extremely bad on the liver and has a couple side effects it ruins families, kills innocent bystanders, years of child abuse and rape, beats it's spouses and does it daily.
If I had a choice which to ban it would be alcohol.

Most people that smoke don't even want to anymore and just saying quit or you're going to die proves how addictive it is and extremely hard if not impossible for a majority of people.
It cost a person $1400 a year to smoke at a pack a day and if that isn't reason enough to quit nothing is.
I smoked about 3 1/2 years after sci and it still wasn't easy to quit even though it helped give me pneumonia on several occasions.
It's terrible to smoke but it isn't easy to quit and I still have cravings to this day and just like an alcoholic I take it day by day.

Our forefathers based this country on agriculture and smuggling. Yet, today we imprison smugglers and marijuana growers. We saw what they did to the opium growers and why,,just because they have no lobby. Tobacco has done wonderful things in this world. If there was no tobaccvo then who would have sponsored nascar in the early days? Moonshiners couldnt make America the wonderful republican hangout it is without some legal help. and yes,, help from God and tobacco!! Tobacco has sent more peoople to meet god early than ford motor company.

Where would Americans be without tobacco? I mean, besides healthier?

[QUAD-L] Prayers for Stacy

2006-05-29 Thread Lori Michaelson

The two WORST sores that I have had in my 26 years of being a quad ... have been in the last 4 1/2 years.  And by process of elimination ... my most recent one [summer of 2004] quadrupled in size almost overnight but began because of moisture "down there."

Once they get started they are almost like wildfires in the desert.  We tried absolutely everything.  And it refused to respond to anything.

The first one [summer of 2001] that I had began as a tiny pimple on the back of my thigh!  We were traveling cross-country to move here to Tucson.  My husband was keeping an eye on it the entire time.  It stayed stable.  After we settled in, it began to get worse and before I knew it  I was bedridden.  I move to a 60% drier climate ... and I get sores caused by moisture!  Go figure!

And I do not know whether it is aging, or what, but my skin does not want to heal like it did years ago.

Wait a minute ... I just remembered that my first sore began by being "yeast" but since there was no odor and no other signs of "yeast" ... the home health agency nurses treated it as a decubitus ulcer and actually made it worse by doing so!

When we were at our wits end ... we sent a wild close-up digital photo of the deep sore to my doctor and she said that it looked like "yeast" and to go ahead and put it yeast cream DIRECTLY on the wound.  Even though the home health agency nurse were shaking her head no.

After we did that ... it cleared up pretty quickly.  After months of listening to the home health "experts" ... it all could have been avoided.  But, of course, we cannot dwell on what has happened.  It only makes us wiser [we hope] for future problems.

You have probably seen that my most recent dilemma was those huge bladder stones.  I was so nervous to go into the hospital to have such a procedure done.  But I had so many friends and family as well as many church friends who gave me individual blessings ... then I came out the same day as if I never had any surgery done whatsoever.

So I will be praying for you and sending you vibes to calm your fears.  It was not until recently that I began to believe in the power of strong meditation for myself or others.  It is a fact that can not destroy "energy" so I believe that is part of what works.

I have heard people talk about flap surgery for a long time now and often times used as a last resort.  The thing that I wonder about is that if they are going to "remove skin" from another part of the body ... what is to say that that procedure will not encourage breakdown in THAT area as well?  no matter how much or how little they remove.

I can't remember if you said or not ... what state and what hospital will you be going into?

My doc has no idea how mine started - he said it might be as simple as an ingrown hair.  I was trying a new cushion at the time which had some pressure there as I sat down.  Within seconds, the pressure sensation faded and I couldn't tell anything.  I was also often  sitting up around 18 hours on days when I noticed some 'swelling' the next mornings.  My bad, I knew better AND I knew more than the doc - surprise surprise.

Hi Lori Ann,     Welcome to the Quad-List.  The fact that you are here tells me that you're a fighter, so don't give up the fight.  Being addicted to pain meds before your SCI makes the fight harder but not impossible to win against.  Your brain will create more pain for every new pain med you use.  That's not to say the pain isn't real because it is very real.  I'm sure you know all this, but it is true.  It sounds like you may need to clean the meds out of your system so your mind can start to fight your pain that it has created.  It's tough battle but never give up the fight because we'll always be  here to help you fight it.   With Love, CtrlAltDel aka DaveC4/5 Complete - 30 Years PostTexas, USA   lori <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: Hi,My name is lori ann and I'm a C-6 complete, just over 13 months post. remaining in bed 36 - 48 hours.

What an enormous co-pay.  Insurance, those are really weird, because
if we have insurance.  Medicare will pay nothing.  It doesn't seem
right.  You should be able to get a wheelchair like that.  Contact
your local independent living Center.  Mine is trying to find me a backup
care from someone who died or something like that.  I forgot what her

My doc has no idea how mine started - he said it might be as simple as an
ingrown hair.  I was trying a new cushion at the time which had some
pressure there as I sat down.  Within seconds, the pressure sensation faded
and I couldn't tell anything.  I was also often  sitting up around 18
hours on days when I noticed some 'swelling' the next mornings.  My bad, I
knew better AND I knew more than the doc - surprise surprise.

I am paraplegic from the T 7 level.  With my long torso it is right
below my chest.  I'm scared about losing strength so I won't be able to do
the transfers, push myself, etc.  I know muscle atrophy sets in within a
couple of weeks.

The type of bed that I was lying in
allowed me to lie on any side or my butt without being turned.  Working
with an OT and a PT, I reinforced upper dressing skills, dental hygiene and
shaving, and washing my upper body independently in front of a face
bowl.  As time went on I get on the elevated mat and practice my balance
while sitting on the edge of the mat, remove my hands in my shoes while
sitting up in long sitting, and self transferring so that I would not create
another bed sore on my butt from neglect of not having any one to help me into
  bed.

I am not strong enough to do effective
pressure reliefs in my electric chair and my original PT had me opt out on a
  tilt chair.

What kind of rehab did you get while laying on your side of stomach? or
did you have to lay on your side.  Thankfully my sore is smaller than
that. It's less than 2cm wide and long, however, it's almost 8cm deep

I had a flap surgery done in
February 2001 one my rear end.  I was in the hospital for a day and a
half was released to a rehab hospital where I stayed on bed rest for three
months on a clinictron bed.  Somewhere near the sixth or seventh week
I was allowed to sit in the chair gradually increasing my times from
one-hour to four hours per day.  The sore on my butt was deep enough
to hide a baseball.  I was told the coccyx bone was in view.
However, there was no other cutting on my body.  I enjoyed the
nursing rehab because I was fed three meals a day, bathed and showered
regularly, received physical therapy while I was there and additional
occupational therapy also and was treated like a king (well may be like a
prince).  It was almost like mini vacation.

OK, so I finally decided to go for the flap and it is on Wed.
I'm really nervous.  The sore is tiny but deep so he is cutting my
leg to move the muscle to the sore which is almost to my butt.

So I have questions.  I didn't realize how much he's going to
cut me.  He said he is going to cut a v then a straight line
towards my knee which is a long cut.  I don’t have feeling but I do
feel the pain from this sore and I have a bad reaction from morphine
through IV so I'm scared of the pain and healing time.  The doc
says about a month.  Have any of you gone through anything similar
to this?  Also the sore is on my left side and in the past my bowel
program only worked on that side.  I'm concerned about that as well
with all of those staples in my leg.

Any advice or information I might be missing out on I would love
it.  My bday is July 3 and I would love to be healed by then.
I am staying in the hospital one to two weeks then coming home.  My
neighbor who helps me with the waiver is going to make sure I have
meals.  She only works a minimal amount of time with me but between
her and her mom, they are going to make sure I'm taken care of.
THANK GOD I DON’T HAVE TO GO TO A REHAB OR NURSING FACILITY.
Whenever I go for testing at the hospital the staff is really nice so I
hope the nurses are as well.

Oh and if you pray I would appreciate them,

Stacy.

I just have pics at disabled of america site.  I took some new ones
but silly me forgot to load them to the computer before deleting them.  I
made prints at walmart.  When I'm up and about, I will load the new ones I
have.  I took one the other day with my van so I could share it with my
Aunt that lives long distance and hasn’t seen it and my Mom has been bugging me
for pics even though I just saw her in March.  Anyhow I will load them when
I get a chance to scan and save them.  Right now the lap top is in my room
hooked to the modem.  I can get wireless by picking up someone elses
modem/router but it's slow and I'm lazy when it comes to unconnecting the
computer plus I only get about 2 hours before it shuts down because the cord is
in my room and I can't reach the plug.  When I'm better, I'll put the
computer back into the living room.  Sorry for the story as to why I don't
have new pictures.  I guess I could of just said no. lol.

I recently healed over from a perineal abscess drain and closure that
started last August.  Closed in Jan and again in April.  I sat up
daily a lot in the middle of it so that prob didn't help any.  It finally
closed by April 15th and now seems ok - that's about 9 months.
A real PIA so to speak.   Fortunately most parts of the body heal
when cared for properly.   Best of luck in your procedure - you've
been through a bunce the last year.  May the healing gods smile on your
  behind.  Any pics?

Re: [QUAD-L] my flap surgery

2006-05-29 Thread Stacy Harim

It was partly my fault.  But the first plastic surgeon back in sept.
decided to open it and debreed it and make it larger and let it close on its
own.  That is when I laid in bed with the wound vac for over 3 months bc
when I got up, the drainage broke the seal.  It kept healing from the sides
but not filling in.  I asked the doctor to do a culture but his reply was
it looks good so I went to the newly opened wound center in my area.  I met
with the plastic surgeon on my 2nd visit and talked about the flap but he wanted
me to see the infectious disease doctor.  My issue with going to the docs
is I'm not in the same position when measuring as I am at home so their
measurements would be smaller.  Anyhow, I had staff and cellulitis.
That cleared up and it did look better.  I gave it time and still didn't
heal so I finally decided to go with the flap.  I wish I didn't wait so
long.

I went to the wound clinic bc he wanted to see me back.  I went back
then he had me go to his private office for a consultation.  I don't know
why he didn’t see me there in the first place.  After that visit, I gave
the office over a week to schedule the surgery then they tell me I need
clearance from my gen doc.  Why didn't they say that in the first
place.  I called them back and asked if I could get the pre op done that
day and they say no we do it here.  My doc was a bit confused
herself.  Her reply was "how do I know if you are healthy enough without
blood work?"  Anyhow she did it and the surgery finally got scheduled but
it was quite an ordeal.  My surgery is Wed. and they had me there this past
thursday at 3:15.  Now these doctor offices are 30 miles from home and so
is the hospital.  I live in a tourist beach area so it was too late to get
the tests thurs so I had to go Friday and had to deal with the lovely traffic
after going out to my van and finding out the battery was dead.  Thank God,
I have great neighbors and caught the guy across the street outside.  He
got his girlfriend but she was worried about her batter bc she was having
problems with her interior light staying on.  She knocked on my other
neighbors door and she helped me.  It was quite funny. I couldn't remember
which clamp went where and she had no idea so she called her husband to find out
how to do it.  She couldn't figure out how to open the hood on her
car.  I don’t blame her bc the latch was in the grill.  I have never
heard of that.  Needless to say it was quite an ordeal on Friday.
Forget that I have tons of things I want to get done so I could get it done
while I could, then testing on friday.  I'm sure you all know it takes
longer to do everything so now I'm in a panic because I still have lots to do in
two days.

Well I needed to get that out...lol.
