So sorry Bobbie, I hope you don't have to wait long, and until your next
aid comes.  Can you tilt back and have somebody pull you up straight, when
they come back?  That's when I tried to do, if it happens, it is so
miserable.  I hate it when my aide forgets to pull me up after
getting me in the chair and doing my exercises. I just read your post
again, and you have to wait till 730 or eight. it is so hard waiting on that
person to come. I have this duct tape that hanging stabilized by cardboard that
I devised hanging from a boom that I have over my desk, that I have my aide put
pills on.  I guess I need to put some pain pills on also.  At least
maybe some painkillers would relieve the pain. I usually have my senna on mind
.

Children, in most cases, respond very favorably to my presence.  I always offer a smile and perhaps  a  hi.  I don't know if this is because they are eye level, naturally curious, or both.  Adults, on the other hand, often avoid my presence if I am rolling by or near them at a public place.

But, here is a question to you folks that I just can't figure out but, for  some reason,  need to understand.   Because I  am a borderline quad/para with some c 8 function with slight arm and hand impairment, I am eligible for an insurance covered power chair.  I have a manual chair and am very strong and capable of using it, however I NEVER use it because I can do so much more with power.  Simple example: I can carry a hot pot from the stove to the counter in 2 seconds, mop the floor, vacuum, etc.  I  go  to a gym  and use an ergometer on high resistance for about an hour for very good aerobic exercise.   I also combine this with weights.  Therefore, I do  not need a manual chair for exercise.

However,  most people who I see who can use a manual chair do so.  I also know that over time many chair users require rotator cuff surgery due to  repetitive motion.   Most people who are able  to use a manual chair do,  yet I do  not  and  would not consider it.  Am I missing out on something by not using a manual chair?  If you had your choice, which would you use?

Best,

Brien

I would like to find out how others handle some situations. I have been turned down by community transportation I applied because my lift in my Van needs repair and it's not safe to use. Community transport denied me saying I had access to a Van. I've explained over and over the lift is in need of repair and I'm on a limited income and cannot afford the repairs. Their position is that it's not their problem and I must use private transport. I've called one private company to arrange a trip to the doctor and back and was told the trip would cost me $740. For a 16 mile trip. I haven't tried private ambulance yet that's next.I decided to use my own transportation till it leaves me stranded. My question is does anyone have any ideas about how one could get themselves home when personal transportation breaks down?AustinC4-5boat accident 1998

I was always scared to go far from my house, incase my chair broke or
something. But now that I got my cell phone and Bluetooth, I’m exploring my
whole neighborhood. I found an unknown path that wound its way around these
new housing developments. Beautifully landscaped, next to a golf course,
about ¾ of mile long. But then it just ended. There was a dirt/gravel path
that went left. Heading towards a main street. It had about an inch lip and
went down hill. I knew going down would be fine, but if the trail did not
go through, could I get back over it. I didn’t try. Next day I tried
finding the path from the other side. I did. After going about 75 feet
down, the dirt path gave way and I slide sideways into a mud hole. I didn’t
move far, just enough to sink about 6 inches. No way of driving out. I
waited a bit, called out a bit. Knowing I was too stuck to call for my
attendant to get me out, I broke down and called 911 (I’m going to add just
the non emergency police number
now). Just as I was giving directions, a truck with landscapers shows up
and gets me out.
I guess going down a soft dirt paths with mud on the edges, isn’t a real
smart thing to do. I keep thinking, What if no phone, what if no
landscapers…

That’s the 2nd time I had to call for help. First was when I was driving
down a sidewalk, hit a piece of gravel, that made my hand come off the
control and my chair stopped immediately. My momentum made me fall forward…
No chest strap. I was to far forward to reach the control or recline
switch. I had to call home for help.

  Thanks for cell phones…

Re: [QUAD-L] Stuck

2006-07-11 Thread Lori Michaelson

When I posted that post about the female quadriplegic found dead in Florida because she apparently got stuck in the sand and in a park in the middle of the day in summer ... I thought that was total insanity to head out by herself like that for so many reasons.  Primarily the god-awful heat!  Since there was absolutely no one around in the park or nearby for a long time [long enough for her to end up dead] ... it was obviously too hot for even able-bodied folks to be out in such miserable heat in the middle of the day!

Anyway, like I said back then in my post ... I am so fortunate to have dozens and dozens and dozens of streets here in North Tucson whereby it is very quiet and serene yet I am always near houses and streets that will have only a few cars passing by ... usually not more than five or 10 minutes go by before I see someone.

However, Greg, I had a similar experience like you described as your second problem.  It happened 4 1/2 years ago in my own subdivision!  I was strolling along at a pretty good clip and I have found since then that might share does not like that very much and will automatically stop!

I was also thrown forward because of the momentum but I was able to sit back up.  My problem was that I was unable to push the on/off button to turn my chair back on.  Any other time, a car would be entry or leaving our subdivision of about 40 houses back then.  But over 15 minutes went by and not a single car or person was in sight!  I couldn't believe it.

Fortunately, it was not warm or too cold but I just sat there wondering what to do.  I was actually sitting next to someone's house and, finally, the woman inside that house happened to be by her kitchen window and saw me sitting out there.  She opened the window and asked if I was okay.  I told her my problem and she came and pushed the button for me.

So see?  Sometimes the worst can happen under almost the best of circumstances!

The only slightly scary thing that has happened to me during one of my strolls in my area here [in a bigger subdivision and neighborhood area than where we lived for years ago] ... was when I went down the street to a very quaint park .7 miles from my home.  As always, I had my dog with me and we were walking around the paved walkways inside the park as well as the grassy area.  The park was deserted except for only one mother and her two little children that were playing on the play equipment.

On my way out of the park I heard the mother tell her little boy "oh look--there is a baby havalena!"  For those of you who do not know what that is ... they are wild pigs found in the desert.  They are nocturnal animals so they are rarely seen during the day.  I had never seen one so I turned around to look.  The little dark brown pig was sniffing a cactus shrub area that my dog had just been sniffing at only moments before!!!

Havalenas can take apart a dog in a matter of minutes.  Unlike the mother and her children ... I obviously could not climb up the ladder on the playground equipment like they could if necessary.  For the baby pig to be alone ... is very rare.  I took a quick look and then began to zoom out of there ASAP.

As always, I told my husband where I was headed and he was probably going to drive my van over to pick me up at the park.  He was just driving the van down the entrance road to the park as I was headed out.  He stopped the van and I got in.  We then drove the short distance to the parking lot to see if we could see the baby pig.

My husband is very familiar with the southwest because that is where he grew up.  I told him what happened and he said that it was a good thing that I began leaving the park because baby pigs are never or rarely alone and that meant that the mama and/or papa was not far behind.  The park is surrounded by desert so that is obviously where they were.  Again, they are hardly ever seen during the daytime but I was very lucky not to still be in the middle of the park OR out in the grass where my dog and I were only minutes before!

Even if I took a cell phone with me ... I would still tell someone the approximate area where I was going to be because there are so many things that can happen even with a cell phone.  Like being in an area where there is no signal.  Or dropping the phone, etc. etc. Etc..

The female quadriplegic's fate in Florida has been closed by the medical examiner's decision but I still do not agree with what her final findings were so there is nothing like double or triple safety measures to take!

Austin,

I've never heard of such!
It's public transportation, right? What does it matter if you have access to a
van or not? Our public transit can't refuse a seat to an able-bodied
person if that person has a private vehicle. This sounds like hogwash to
me. Maybe you should contact the head of the Department of

I was teasing about the
irking part. I'm really sorry about your marriage ending, I know how difficult
it is to lose not only your long-term partner but your main care-giver. It's
tough to realize but sometimes our significant others just burn out especially

why your relationship is breaking up but it certainly contributed to mine.

Many in our community have been fighting to keep MalMart out. They already put 3 in a 3 mile area. They call it the “MalMart Triangle.” At least the city made them redesign the outside. The Super MalMarts are so big. They made them make it look like it was 3 different buildings. It’s a nice looking stripmall, but there are just too many of them. The article I read says  home prices drop 10% and crime goes up by 15% once a WalMrt goes in. Plus now, they are just un American. I saw one story about one of the last American made flat screen tv monitor makers was told by WalMart, if he did not relocate his companies production lines to China, to lower the cost a few percents, they would no longer carry that product…

Children, in most cases, respond very favorably to my
presence.  I always offer a smile and perhaps  a  hi.  I
don't know if this is because they are eye level, naturally curious, or
both.  Adults, on the other hand, often avoid my presence if I am rolling
by or near them at a public place.

But, here is a question to you folks that I just can't figure out but,
for  some reason,  need to understand.   Because I
am a borderline quad/para with some c 8 function with slight arm and hand
impairment, I am eligible for an insurance covered power chair.  I have a
manual chair and am very strong and capable of using it, however I NEVER use
it because I can do so much more with power.  Simple example: I can carry
a hot pot from the stove to the counter in 2 seconds, mop the floor, vacuum,
etc.  I  go  to a gym  and use an ergometer on high
resistance for about an hour for very good aerobic exercise.   I
also combine this with weights.  Therefore, I do  not need a manual
  chair for exercise.

However,  most people who I see who can use a manual chair do
so.  I also know that over time many chair users require rotator cuff
surgery due to  repetitive motion.   Most people who are
able  to use a manual chair do,  yet I do  not  and
would not consider it.  Am I missing out on something by not using a
manual chair?  If you had your choice, which would you use?

[QUAD-L] Stuck

2006-07-11 Thread Greg

I got stuck..!

I was always scared to go far from my house, incase my chair
broke or something. But now that I got my cell phone and Bluetooth, I’m
exploring my whole neighborhood. I found an unknown path that wound its way around
these new housing developments. Beautifully landscaped, next to a golf course,
about ¾ of mile long. But then it just ended. There was a dirt/gravel path that
went left. Heading towards a main street. It had about an inch lip and went
down hill. I knew going down would be fine, but if the trail did not go
through, could I get back over it. I didn’t try. Next day I tried finding
the path from the other side. I did. After going about 75 feet down, the dirt
path gave way and I slide sideways into a mud hole. I didn’t move far,
just enough to sink about 6 inches. No way of driving out. I waited a bit,
called out a bit. Knowing I was too stuck to call for my attendant to get me
out, I broke down and called 911 (I’m going to add just the non emergency
police number now). Just as I was giving directions, a truck with landscapers
shows up and gets me out.

I guess going down a soft dirt paths with mud on the edges,
isn’t a real smart thing to do. I keep thinking, What if no phone, what
if no landscapers…

That’s the 2nd time I had to call for help.
First was when I was driving down a sidewalk, hit a piece of gravel, that made
my hand come off the control and my chair stopped immediately. My momentum made
me fall forward… No chest strap. I was to far forward to reach the
control or recline switch. I had to call home for help.

Thanks for cell phones…

Many in our community have been fighting
to keep MalMart out. They already put 3 in a 3 mile area. They call it the “MalMart
Triangle.” At least the city made them redesign the outside. The Super
MalMarts are so big. They made them make it look like it was 3 different
buildings. It’s a nice looking stripmall, but there are just too many of
them. The article I read says  home prices drop 10% and crime goes up by
15% once a WalMrt goes in. Plus now, they are just un American. I saw one story

WalMart, if he did not relocate his companies production lines to China, to

[QUAD-L] [Fwd: WE EXPECT A VOTE ANY DAY ON HR 810 AND NEED YOUR HELP ASAP!]

2006-07-11 Thread Angelique Novak

--- Begin Message ---

Dear Friends,

We have learned that the Senate debate and vote on the Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act, H.R. 810, may occur as early as the latter part of this week. This is the moment we have been waiting for since the bill passed the House of Representatives on May, 24, 2005. This is our one and only chance to get the bill passed by the Senate and we need you to act NOW!

Shortly before the Fourth of July recess, Senator Frist successfully obtained what is called “unanimous consent” from his Senate colleagues to move forward with a vote on a package of bills that includes H.R. 810. The other bills in the package are the Alternative Pluripotent Stem Cell Therapies Enhancement Act, S. 2754, and the Fetus Farming Prohibition Act of 2006, S. 3504. Under the agreement, amendments will not be permitted and each bill will have a separate vote and will need at least 60 votes to pass. Our friends in the Senate tell us to expect to be prepared for a vote any day.

We will not be taking a position on the other two bills; our goal is to get H.R. 810 passed. We do not believe the other bills change anything or allow for anything new. We estimate that both other bills will pass overwhelmingly. It is a vote for H.R. 810, and this bill alone, that will move stem cell research forward in our country. ALL correspondence to and discussion with the Senate must be clear that a vote in favor of H.R. 810 is the only pro-patient, pro-cure, pro-research vote that Senators can take. We all must be consistent with our message that Senators VOTE FOR H.R. 810 and that a vote for the other bills will absolutely NOT be sufficient. Some Senators will try to hide behind the other bills and claim that they are pro-stem cell research. We cannot allow them to do that. We all must emphasize that a Senator's votes will only be acceptable if she or he VOTES FOR H.R. 810, and that a vote against H.R. 810 is a vote against 100 million patients and against moving forward with research.

ACTION PLAN CHECK LIST

Please do as many of the following as you can:

ACTION #1
Pick up the telephone NOW and call your Senators urging them to vote in favor of H.R. 810.

Call your senators at the following numbers and share with them the message below:

Senator Mark Dayton
Telephone #: (202) 224-3244

Senator Norm Coleman
Telephone #: (202) 224-5641

Message:

“I strongly support the Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act (H.R. 810) and ask that you vote in favor of it. Only a vote in favor of H.R. 810 is a vote in favor of moving stem cell research forward in our county. Please work to pass H.R. 810 immediately.”

ACTION #2
Send a letter in support of H.R. 810 to your Senators. These letters must be sent via fax or hand-delivery AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. Don't worry about personalizing the letter if that will hold you up - just send our suggested letter with your name and address! Our supporters will use them as they make the case for the bill, and those who are not yet with us need to hear from each of you.

Suggested Letter:

“Dear Senator,

I strongly support the Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act (H.R. 810) and ask that you vote in favor of it. Only a vote in favor of H.R. 810 is a vote in favor of moving stem cell research forward in our county. A vote against H.R. 810 is a vote against 100 million patients and against progress for research. I will not accept your vote for any other bill as support for stem cell research.

H.R. 810 is the only bill that is pro-patient, pro-cure, and pro-research. Please work to pass H.R. 810 immediately.

Sincerely,

Your Name
Address”

Fax your letters to:

Senator Mark Dayton
Fax #: (202) 228-2186

Senator Norm Coleman
Fax #: (202) 224-1152

ACTION #3
Reach out to your family, friends, and neighbors and urge them all to call, fax and email their Senators in support of H.R. 810. This is the time to pull out all the stops; we will not have another opportunity for a Senate vote on H.R. 810.

ACTION #4
Make in-person appointments with the staff of Senators who are not cosponsors of H.R. 810 to make the case in support of the bill. This will be most feasible if you live in the Washington, DC area, but if you are based outside of DC and plan to come to town for meetings on stem cell research, NOW is the time.

The following is a list of the cosponsors of the Senate version of H.R. 810. If you do NOT see your Senator’s name on this list, then please work as hard as you can to make contact with that office.

SUPPORTERS of H.R. 810:
