Re: [QUAD-L] mattresses

2007-10-15 Thread Lori Michaelson
For the last couple of years at least I have been using an alternating air
pressure reducing mattress that is a rental from a local medical vendor.
Medicare pays for the majority and we have to pay something like four
dollars or six dollars every couple of months or something like that. Even
though they like to try to get away with much more.

The only reason I do this is because all air mattresses easily get punctured
or something happens to them in less than a year or so ... so they need to
be replaced and when you are with a vendor they will bring another one out
ASAP.

But I also keep 2 waffle air mattresses (that do not require electric pumps)
on hand just in case I decide to go back to using one of those. I began
using them in 1995 and liked their comfort then. I switched to the rental
alternating air one because... well I can't remember why now unless I
thought it was better for my buttocks, etc..

Monday, October 15th will be my celebration of 17 years as a quad. Why

me, and that in itself was good and bad. Good in that she cared so much, and
bad because it changed our mother daughter relationship. It took a few years

youngest son died five years ago, and he was one of the rocks in my life that I
could count on, and I still miss him today
I help my daughter to home school her children, four, eight, and 10, and they
in turn help me with everyday living. Does Grams want a drink-can I have one
also Grams? My feet are a very convenient place to sit, my lap is a good place
to sit upon for a snuggle, and it’s a whole lot quicker to ride on the back of
Gramm’s wheelchair than it is to walk!
Do I wish that I could hug my grandchildren and my great grandchild? Oh yes I
do. However, God has allowed me these extra precious years, and I hope I will
continue to have many more years and milestones.
I hope that each of you on this list of broken down bodies J can also find
some joy in each day and in your own way celebrate the life that you are still
living. For me, this life is infinitely better than not living at all.

Hi - Dave, I had my wife take some pics of my lift because you and a few
others wanted to see it, but my printer-scanner-copy machine is down..I will
have to get someone to repair it later. But you guys can go to
PLANETMOBILITY.COM and they got pics of it thereMine is the 1st lift
shown it's a TRANSACTIVE made by Waverly-Glen. ( the man shown being lifted is
in a full sling--but the also sell a quick 2 piece strap sling set ) that is
what I use. Dan

70 years old and was here for a visit, I was feeling bad and wanted to go to
bed--she was a bit afraid to try and put me in bed but I talked her thru it and
was in bed in no time, When she got done she said, wow that is so easy-there is
nothing to it !. When we got ours the cost was around $4,000 but now some are
around $2,000--check sights such as spin-life and so on. A workman installed
my lift and were ready to leave in only about 2 short hours. There are many
types and brands--just read or watch video's to see what might be best for your
needs. I'm a c-6 so I don't need the full sling that comes with them--I ordered
a 2 piece strap set and that is much easier and faster, It goes across under
your knees, the the 2nd strap around upper body
trunk undr arms then up in front to lift. Most quads with any arm movement can
use the 2 piece.

   good luck, Dan H.

[QUAD-L] mattresses

2007-10-15 Thread John S.
Just out of curiosity, What kind of mattresses do those of you using hospital
beds use. I have used egg crate toppers on regular staw filled vinyl mattresses
and I had a low air loss mattress I was able to keep workingfor 9 years. Now I
have an alternating pressure mattess from ebay that a sister bought. Its
reasonably comfortable but no help with pressure areas. If I have a bad spot
getting red I have to get egg crate under it or this alternating system will
rip the skin apart.
With medicare/medicaid no mattrss suppliers want to deal with me because in
Ohio they often refuse payment on low air loss mattresses. I sure havent got 5
thousand dollars or even 21 thousand for e bay.

I know what you mean about availability of caregivers. It's horrible here.
I got my extra hours approved but I can't find anyone willing to drive 30
miles for the 2 hours in the morning and at night. I'm so frustrated that
I've been in bed so long unecessarily. I had the pleasure of being up for
inpatient rehab for almost 2 weeks since May. Another summer gone.

I'm sorry about your brother. Even family can be very selfish. My older
brother didn't even call when he found out that I broke my back and spent
time in the hospital. He talked to my mom once and that is when he found
out. You'd think after almost losing us, they would be a little more
grateful that we are alive.
