Wii- could be the new physical therapy that you weren't told about. I see
it nursing homes and rehab centers. And it works to get people moving and
thinking. Would love to see a quad tourney on the internet to see what
happens. Come on Jim...this can be your next website, lol.

When I have a silicone catheter in my body, my bladder spasms profusely, I

Hey Mark, Tim...

(-Mark, Great hearing from you again!-)

(...and Tim, I think I remember you from way back? Or am I thinking of another
Tim?)

Anyway:
One thing I forgot to mention although I said I've had far fewer serious
infections, that isn't to say I don't get infections. This seems to vary
across the board but personally, the full truth of it is I've had to leasrn to
live with the fact I almost always have a so-called low grade infection that
none of my docs feel should be treated.

By low grade I mean the only real symptom is cloudy urine almost all the
time... sometimes even chunky urine that looks more like ricotta or cottage
cheese in the bedside drainage bag tube. The latter cheese is not the norm
but the ricotta is usually Ok.

At first we treated UTIs as usual with the lab, urine CS, and antiobiotics.
We slowly backed off on the antibiotics to: #1) prevent the buildup or
creation of resistant strains and #2) make sure I didn't kill all the good
gastrointestinal bacteria while allowing a resistant H. pylori to form and
cause ulcers... a common problem with frequent antibiotic treatments,
especially oral ones, or switching them often. (I eat yogurt every day because
of what too many antibiotics started doing to my stomach lining.)

Even with the constant low-grade UTI, I've only had 3-4 UTIs needing
antibiotics in the last 5-7 years. At the advice of 3 docs, I don't even get
them checked anymore unless I get other continuing symptoms. Things like
fever, spasms, a red and irritated SP site (stoma) that doesn't clear up by
changing the catheter, etc. are my Red Flag UTI symptoms. THOSE get checked
out.

There's an SP learning curve. It takes a whiile to figure it all out... just
like Everything Quad... but once you get the hang of it [poor pun intended]
it's quite a freeing experience ['nother pun] that gives an opportunity to do
much, MUCH more with far fewer worries about springing a leak or blowing off a
Texas cath at just the wrong time.

OH... ONE MORE... If you have the ability to know or feel when you're voiding,
that sensation will be gone. It will be a continuous trickle. Because of that
it can be more difficult to know when/if your legbag ids getting full unless
you can see it. You should be sure you can empty it whenever you want to or
need to... i.e. doing it yourself, an electric bag emptier, or always with
someone who can do it for you.

It's different for everyone, but mostly a positive change overall.

Once again, good luck!

 Hi Tim

When I first got my suprapubic in '97 I took the morning off from work. The
whole procedure was done without anesthesia but they kept careful watch on
my BP... I did get a little AD as a over-filled my bladder to begin the
 procedure.

I went home with a 12fr foley and went to work that afternoon. That first
month was a little difficult as I did leak around the stoma at times and
granules would build up and clog the narrow 12fr. About one month later I
graduated to a 14fr, and then 16fr, and finally settled into using an 18f
foley catheter ever since. It works well for me but I do still occasionally
get crystallization and granules in the catheter. That's when I know it's
certainly time to change it... usually every 4 to 6 weeks.

As for cleaning, each day I use a small amount of Neosporin cream and
sprinkle a bit of Tinactin (yep, the foot powder) around it to keep it dry.
I cover it with a 2 x 2 square of gauze drain sponge cut in such a way
that the catheter comes out the middle (kind of a T shaped cut into the
 center). Works well for me.

I have friends who went to get a SP and there was no graduating from smaller
to larger diameters. They came home with the 24fr. To me, it looks like a
garden hose! On the other hand, they rarely get clogged. So I guess it's 6
of one, half a dozen of the other.

However you do it, I wish you the best. I've had wonderful success with
mine and had far fewer serious infections and urethral irritations ever
since. I'm sure you'll at least have that to look forward to. (Not to
 mention the Free Willie Factor)

 Best of luck!

Hi Gina Quadius,

I know what you mean. I had similar issues with catheters as both of you. The
silione ones caused irritation and even pain at times. The latex ones caused
redness after a week or two.

After some reading I found there were two types opf latex catheters... teflon
coated and silicone coated. Most warehouse-type places send whatever they
happen to grab when they pull your order. I fopund I had to specify silicone
coated latex NOT silicone, not latex and not teflon coated. HAS TO BE
silicone coated.

I don't know who you get your supplies from but I've found Edgepark to great at
sending monthly orders without having to call all the time (unless something
changes) and almost always getting it right! And never any problems with
returns when they do goof.

Best regards!

Yes , Tod... like W said, that guy drank glasses full each day for a long
period of time, you are supposed to only take a few tablespoons of it a day.
Plus all the reputable sellers have never had that happen to anyone. Also on
the D Mannose issue---It works excellent BUT it is only good for 1 type of
bacteria and that is the E. Coli type ONLY. If you have any of the other
bacteria UTI's it won't help.

2008-04-16 Thread John S.
You don't turn blue from real colloidal Silver. It occurrs when taking protein
silver. When you use the Colloidal Silver, you want to hold it under your
tongue for about 30 seconds once a day. It is incredibly cheap compared to
antibiotics that you are no longer needing. The more times you avoid using the
other antibiotics the better they work when you do get an infection that isn't
responding to your preventions.
The stuff is so safe you can use it in your eyes and ears.
You can get antiseptic catheters that are impregnated with silver. Let me know
if anyone tries them?

Yes , Tod... like W said, that guy drank glasses full each day for a long
period of time, you are supposed to only take a few tablespoons of it a day.
Plus all the reputable sellers have never had that happen to anyone. Also
on the D Mannose issue---It works excellent BUT it is only good for 1
type of bacteria and that is the E. Coli type ONLY. If you have any of
the other bacteria UTI's it won't help.

You don't turn blue from real colloidal Silver. It occurrs when taking
protein silver. When you use the Colloidal Silver, you want to hold it under
your tongue for about 30 seconds once a day. It is incredibly cheap compared
to antibiotics that you are no longer needing. The more times you avoid
using the other antibiotics the better they work when you do get an
infection that isn't responding to your preventions.
The stuff is so safe you can use it in your eyes and ears.
You can get antiseptic catheters that are impregnated with silver. Let me
know if anyone tries them?

them to agree to do reconstructive surgery about five or six years later.
When I have a silicone catheter in my body, my bladder spasms profusely, I
feel like I have a terrible UTI, the stoma tries to adhered itself to the
catheter, and there are excessive amounts of calcification on the end of the
catheter when it is removed. I now only use latex catheters with a little
 bit of silicone coating.
According to my care providers, this is an abnormal allergy, but I thought
I'd let you know about it since you're, seems to close around your catheter.

2008-04-16 Thread DAANOO
Does that work with respiratory problems. I had pneumonia several weeks ago
in the hospital and I was on three different IV, because over-the-counter
antibiotics did nothing as I had taken four different antibiotics at home and
am still horribly congested although it is not yellow and no fever. I don't
know if I have caught another bug since then. I called my pulmonary doctor
that I had in the hospital and his nurse said it just takes a long time to get
over, so I went to a second opinion. That doctor ordered Pulmicort Brovana
to be taken in the nebulizer each morning and night and a Duoneb to be taken
in the afternoon. Yesterday after I got up oh so congested I could not keep
the button of my trach in and breathe. I had just taken a Duoneb breathing
treatment, so my friend who is a respiratory therapist said like take another
one so I did. After taking it I was OK in till after my care and getting
that way again and needing another breathing treatment two in a row although
waiting about an hour in between them.
My doctor through the second opinion are trying to get to newer medications
to use but having trouble with insurance because it's a compound mix. The
doctor will probably have to prove it is needed with clinical I guess from
what
my nurse manager of insurance said I may have to try a specialty pharmacy.
My pharmacy had Pulmicort but could not get brovana and another pharmacy I
called could get both. Is anybody familiar with this treatment and medications
used in the nebulizer? . I normally just get bronchitis in the winter one or
two times but not hospitalized. A couple years ago I did get Pseudomonas and
use the pic line at home and it went on for two to three months.

Just wondering if anyone knew if colloidal silver would help with
respiratory . I have only noticed you talking about UTI's.

Thank you John or anyone else familiar with colloidal silver. .

I know this has been rehashed over and over again, but I was in getting
fitted for a new wheelchair and the therapist mentioned that there is a new
GMC minivan which can have the floor lowered 10 inches. I usually sit
around 57 1/2 inches, but am able to tilt back slightly in order to get into
a van. I am wondering if I might fit into such a van. It sure would be
great for the gas mileage, not to mention the parking.

Pubic in 3 ...

Does that work with respiratory problems. I had pneumonia several weeks ago
in the hospital and I was on three different IV, because over-the-counter
antibiotics did nothing as I had taken four different antibiotics at home
and am still horribly congested although it is not yellow and no fever. I
don't know if I have caught another bug since then. I called my pulmonary
doctor that I had in the hospital and his nurse said it just takes a long
time to get over, so I went to a second opinion. That doctor ordered
Pulmicort Brovana to be taken in the nebulizer each morning and night and
a Duoneb to be taken in the afternoon. Yesterday after I got up oh so
congested I could not keep the button of my trach in and breathe. I had
just taken a Duoneb breathing treatment, so my friend who is a respiratory
therapist said like take another one so I did. After taking it I was OK in
till after my care and getting that way again and needing another breathing
treatment two in a row although waiting about an hour in between them.
My doctor through the second opinion are trying to get to newer medications
to use but having trouble with insurance because it's a compound mix. The
doctor will probably have to prove it is needed with clinical I guess from
what my nurse manager of insurance said I may have to try a specialty
pharmacy. My pharmacy had Pulmicort but could not get brovana and another
pharmacy I called could get both. Is anybody familiar with this treatment
and medications used in the nebulizer? . I normally just get bronchitis in
the winter one or two times but not hospitalized. A couple years ago I did
get Pseudomonas and use the pic line at home and it went on for two to three
months.

Just wondering if anyone knew if colloidal silver would help with
respiratory . I have only noticed you talking about UTI's.

Thank you John or anyone else familiar with colloidal silver. .

where do you get your colloidal silver, the price and how often do you take
and on what medical problems do you take?

2008-04-16 Thread John S.
yes, you can use colloidal silver with a nebulizer. It isn't like taking most
antibiotics. It has to get into your system. What you notice after using it for
awhile is how many fewer times you get infections, of all kinds.
Don't stop taking what the doctors are giving you, but an hour after you take
antibiotics, take acidophylus. Each morning add a multi vitamin and 500 mg of
vitamin C. It can be taken a second time each day. You can get probiotic
capsules that are loaded with good bacteria. By taking them an hour after your
antibiotics it gets your system back into a normal balance. The idea of taking
it regularly is to give good bacteria a chance to starve the bad bacteria. Once
you are feeling better you only need one capsule a day.

I Wish you the Best,
john

FW: FW: [QUAD-L] Modifications to vans

2008-04-16 Thread Merrill Burghardt
It's the lowered floor with kneeling system. To get in I need to be on
level ground. I have also gotten into other similar, different make
kneeling systems. I have not heard of someone unable to get in.

I am getting ready to start looking again and happened to look through these
old e-mails.

Based on this e-mail you sit at 58 inches and you're able to fit into a
mini Dodge. What type of ramp or lift do you have?

I know this has been rehashed over and over again, but I was in getting
fitted for a new wheelchair and the therapist mentioned that there is a new
GMC minivan which can have the floor lowered 10 inches. I usually sit
around 57 1/2 inches, but am able to tilt back slightly in order to get into
a van. I am wondering if I might fit into such a van. It sure would be
great for the gas mileage, not to mention the parking.
