Re: [QUAD-L] uti infections that require IV drugs

2009-01-27 Thread Lori Michaelson
Nope, never heard of getting shots. S I did a Google search
on "injections for pseudemonas utis" and found this --
http://www.springerlink.com/content/w23444xg25202712/ The last sentence
under *Summary* seems to say yes for that. Never heard of that drug
either.

My last IV therapy drug to fight two pathogens was ZOSYN.

John is correct when he said Drs may not want to remove a stone with an
infection present. That was my dilemma but I HAD little choice as I had 8
ROCKS in my bladder and they HAD to come out since :
A) They were causing all my previous UTIs over thge previous 6 yrs and
B) They can "hang on" to the bugs and so NEEDED to come out.

My urologist was hesitant to do the outpatient surgery when I had pathogens
present but went ahead with large doses of IV antibiodics during surgery and
oral ones 10 days-2weeks after surgery. This was May 2006.

In July or August of 2006 both my Dr and I were distressed when I got
another bad UTI with a pathogen being the bug. BACK on at-home IV
antibiodics. Yes - I was scared. Thought the surgery would solve my
problem.

*I* only treat (if you remember) when I have a fever. Fever = BAD NEWS.

Knock on wood I've not had any in a long time. I hate to say that -- jinx
myself.

I still check my urine Ph on occassion with the U/A strips as that was my
problem for awhile after summer 2006 and it's been at a good number (6.5)
and eliminated bananas from my diet as they were making my urine too
alkaline (7+ Ph readings - uncool and bacteria friendly).

Best,
Lori (keep in touch)

I'd suggest working with one Dr though

RE: [QUAD-L] uti infections that require IV drugs

2009-01-27 Thread Steve Oldaker
Hi Dan,

I went through a period of more than a year of UTIs seemingly back-to-back.
I was initially treated with oral antibiotics, then injectables, then via
IV. I would get an infection, be treated, then a week or two later be
infected yet again, sometimes with the same bug, sometimes another. I
ultimately was referred to Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville where after extensive
testing they put me on a maintenance dosage of Bactrim (half the normal
dosage of the antibiotic) for four months. That was about 11 months ago and
I have not had a single UTI since then.

Re: [QUAD-L] uti infections that require IV drugs

2009-01-27 Thread John S.
Dear Dan,
Just curious, do you have a lot of house plants. Pseudomonas is a bacteria that
is always in soil and on many plant leaves. Often, it manages to survive anti
biotics that should have wiped it out. I had to take IV anti biotics and get
rid of all my living plants to end that bug. Whoever cleans around your
catheter needs to avoid plants, too. It is a very tough bacteria and will
travel and survive conditions it shouldn't be able to.
You really need to get rid of it even if it requires IV anti biotics because it
can cause sepsis if left untreated. You may very well have a stone, but the
doctor may not want to remove a stone while you have an infection. Stones can
form in very short time periods. Your bones are decalcifying like an astronaut.
Unfortunately, calcium leaves the body through the kidneys and you are at risk
of kidney and bladder stones.
I've had the opposite experience. I rarely get UTI's with an external catheter,
but I have not been catheterized since 1996.
Do you flush your bladder with sterile water between changing it? While I have
never tried it, maybe colloidal silver would be more effective if used with the
flush.
Now, my theory on backflow. The catheters do not have anti-backflow valves
where they connect to leg bag and bed bag lines that also lack anti backflow
valves. The anti-backflow valves are in the bags. There is nothing preventing
the lines to the bag from flowing back into you along with the bacteria that is
growing in it and if it was just cleaned with clorox, just how good is that
when it enters your bladder?
My solution is to attach a 500cc leg bag to the catheter when it is first put
in and attach your leg bag and bed bag lines. This puts an anti backflow valve
at the end of your catheter and you can see how much urine or cleaning solution
flows back from the lines when it is stopped in the 500cc bag. Lets face it, it
only takes a fraction of a drop to reinfect you.
Do not let people change your catheter that can't keep the job sterile. Exam
gloves are not acceptable and sterile gloves over a year old are just exam
gloves. You can call the manufacturer and find out when a batch was made and
shipped.
Yes, you build up resistance to anti biotics so it is important to avoid
infections. STOP SHAKING HANDS!

I  wish you all the best,
john

I THINK you recall my history Danny since you & I have had these similar
battles.

I was treated twice.  Summer of 2005  (one bug alone--forgot whether it was
Proteus Mirabilis or Psedemonas but I'm pretty sure it was the prior) then
Summer of 2006 (both BIG BAD BUGS -- PROTEUS MIRABILIS & PSEUDEMONAS).  Both
times requiring I.V. antibiodics.  SCARY with TWO pathogens running rampant and
AFTER bladder stone removal.  :-(   But IV antibiodics took care of THEM.  The
earlier the better with how aggressive these pathogens are.

It's irrelevant how fast stones grow when an infection is present.  Cuz, no
matter what, one has the infection.

Pseudemonas is one of THE BIG BAD PATHOGENS.  Very uncool to "wait and see" as
it "grows and spreads and encapsulates."  Been over this ground before of
discussing it here.

What does your "newer" Urologist think?  Not that Drs CAN always think :-) but
it's up to him for treatment or looking out for your best interest.  If
he doesn't think Pseudemonas isn't a big deal -- he's a fool.  If you HAVE the
infection -- preventatives (H2O intake, Cranberry juice or tablets, more
Vitamin C) won't DO anything.

: [QUAD-L] until infections that require IV drugs

2009-01-27 Thread Merrill
Twice in eighteen years I had allowed UTI's to advance to getting into my
blood stream. Both times required hospitalization and IV antibiotics for
four days. Since going to a suprra - pubic three years ago I have not had
any problems if enough fluids are consumed. But my early days when I used
the external catheters, frequent UTI's were treated successfully with fluids
and oral antibiotics. A product named

UTI Clear with fluids keep me UTI clean since the SP.

I have had quadtro cushions for about 7 years. I have had a lot of problems
with the valve in front leaking , I haven't keep track of the number of times
they have been in for repair , but it seems like a lot. I'm lucky the VA gives
me a back up cushion. I just got an airpulse pk , so far I like it, except it
is firmer than the rohos even on it's lowest setting.

Hi everybody :-)

I have a serious roho cushion problem. Some of you might give me some suitable
and effective advice.

Its almost 3 and half years I bought one roho cushion quadtro pro high profile.
I was more then satisfied with it. Because after using it I did not have any
more pressure sore. Quite peaceful life.

Suddenly yesterday it was found that it was leaked under my right butt. My
attendants tried, but couldn't trace out the leak (there is leak for sure).

Now, for an immediate measure I started using it with placing front side at the
back. Those who used it must be knowing that, it works on a isoflo quadrennial
compartment memory system. So that even 1 compartment is leaked, rest 3
compartments are effective.

As my attendants couldn't trace out the leak, I am waiting for my brother to
come and trace the leak. He is staying in another city and he will come after
few weeks.

Now, my question is, can I use it this way for some time ? Will it damage the
system ? Or, what do you suggest ? Even buying a new one will take some time as
I am not residing in USA. Also, if I need to buy a new one, please suggest any
seller where I may get best price.

Thanks in advance for your valuable advice :-)

Please take care :-)

Yours,

HI ALL-- I WAS WONDERING IF ANY OF YOU HAVE HAD REPEAT IV ANTIBIOTIC DRUG
TREATMENT FOR BLADDER INFECTIONS?  I HAVE BEEN TREATED 3 DIFFERENT TIMES IN THE
PAST FOR PSEDOMONAS UTI'S .  JUST TODAY I WAS INFORMED THAT I HAVE IT AGAIN AND
NO ORAL DRUGS CAN HELP ME.  I HAD MY 1ST BLADDER STONE REMOVED EXACTLY 2 YEARS
AGO-SO NOT SURE IF I COULD HAVE ANOTHER, BECAUSE I'M NOT SURE HOW FAST A
STONE CAN DEVELOPE? I'M GETTING WORRIED ABOUT RESISTANCE TO IV ANTIBIOTICS---
NOT SURE HOW MANY TIMES A PERSON CAN GET REPEAT TREATMENTS ? ANY IDEA'S ? I'M
GOING TO TRY AND HOLD OFF TREATMENT FOR A BIT TO SEE IF MY SYMPTOMS GET
WORSE... RIGHT NOW IT'S JUST INCREASED SPASMS OF BODY AND SPASMS AND PAIN IN MY
BLADDER. I HAVE A SUPRA-PUBIC CATHETER.
 THANKS TO ANY REPLY'S   DAN H. C-6  11.5 YR.
