[QUAD-L] DVT in calf
Hey gang! My right calf and foot have been swollen and numb feeling (I have great sensation in whole body). So Tuesday I was able to see my rehab doc, he thought the symptoms showed a DVT. I couldnt think of why I would have one. So the Wednesday I went to get ultrasound. Yep, the front left vein has a clot. They wouldn't let me leave the hospital until the doctors had a plan. So I'm on 5mg Coumadin a day and a shot of Enoxaparin Sodium every 12 hours. Yesterday when I was getting up I looked down at my right chin, i remembered a scab that I've had a while and it dawned on me...on May 7th I went to the dentist and while under nitrous and my hand control turned to the side, I decided to reaarange my chair. In doing so I rammed my leg into a table. Thank goodness I had on jeans and a blanket because it scraped my leg to chin bone. It never dawned on me i could have given myself a DVT. Yet when I look at the now scar and where my sensation starts changing it's the same area. Now I've got to watch out more closely!! Anyone else ever have one? How long was treatment? Amye - LQ

Nothing personal Dan, but since all of the Fraud claims of the past years, you are paying the price and will continue to pay the price until guidelines are changed. Government paid chairs are designed for in house mobility. The fact that you and so many others actually going out and having a life is beyond their concept. Even when extreme rehab chairs are specified. Everything is questioned and checked. The t's crossed and the i's dotted. I do hope this situation changes for the better. Best Wishes In a message dated 6/5/2012 4:00:36 P.M. Central Daylight Time, d...@unh.edu writes: I wish it was that easy, and in the past it was. Now you can have all the OTs, PTs and the best doctors in the world but if Medicare or Medicaid or your private insurance says they will not pay for a stage 4 chair, you're not going to get one. How do they expect us to get out of the house unless we have a good reliable chair? Especially those of us who rely on Ventilators? My first chair was an Everest in Jennings. It was a piece of crap. But extremely simple. You could get most of the parts you needed to fix it from RadioShack. After dealing with the constant repairs of that chair. I got a really good one called Century 21. I still use the same company today. Each chair last me at least 12 years. I'm sure I could go longer, but the electronics eventually go out of date. Unfortunately, the Century 21 is considered a high-end chair. That is to say it's very expensive -- $22,000. But it's worth every penny, because I know it won't break down, and it will last me more than a decade. Would someone please give me an answer as to why insurance companies will not pay for a good chair? Don't they realize that our chair is our bodies? And how miserable we are when our chair is not working? I see! They just don't give a damn. Amye - LQ I had one and am now on a low dose of a blood thinner for preventative care. When my accident originally happened I had a greenfield filter put in so if any clots broke free they wouldn't make it to my lungs/heart or up, the filter is good for 3 to 5 years and then you need it replaced -Danny
RE: [QUAD-L] My Anniversary
Congratulations on still having a positive attitude. I'm only half as long coming out for 22 years, but I've got 13 years on you and I definitely hear you about the OCD! J I think it is a tossup which is worse, flooding or burning, they both make an awful mess and I've been fortunate to have both. Good luck with your cleanup. I WAS going to celebrate, go out, have a nice dinner, etc. but that all changed when I woke up to find my whole apartment flooded. The water heater blew up. I have to stay in another apartment for a week+. Half my stuff here, half there (my OCD is kicking in big time) They have to replace all of my carpeting, possibly some drywall, paint, etc., etc., etc. This other apartment reeks of smoke - it's disgusting!!! Yuck. Now I get to go through all of my boxes to see what's been damaged. So far I've found one photograph by a favorite artist and several old (1882 - 1902) books that have extensive water damage. Very sad. So I have my work cut out for me this week. But, I made it through another year. So I guess it's not all bad news! YAY ME! :)
Re: [QUAD-L] DVT in calf
The original designed ones actually cannot be replaced only the newer ones can be. According to the doctor I was talking to the last time I was in the hospital he said because I've got an older type mine wasn't replaceable and the vein has grown in a way that it is only about 50% efficient. According to him they work for about 3 to 5 years good. The newer type of filers are meant to be retrievable and/or replaceable. I have an older style in me so I had asked him what my options were and he said they can put a newer one in front of my old one and that it would be good for 3 to 5 years again but its replaceable and would need to be replaced removed and a new one put in every year about. I then asked him why not every 3 years and he told me it really depends on how the vein grows and the safest bet would be once a year. Also, another posted put how people quit cancer procedures because the insurance runs out and their family cannot afford it. At the beginning of my Spinal Cord Injury days, thought it would be better to meet a Kavorkian (sp) type of doctor because I knew that there was no way that my husband would swing the bills on his paycheck. .3 As of the beginning of March, I had already met my $2500 deductible because of my wound clinic visits alone. I try to stretch my visits out to three weeks, but there were times that I had to see them weekly or several times a week. Our luxuries are limited. We have internet because my husband doesn't want me isolated. We have a land line so the doctors have a number to call. (Internet and landline are a package deal that saves us money) We have $25 a month cell phones because one summer the electricity went out on our side of the city and there was no way to call 911 if I had fallen. We have Netflix which is under $8 per month and we do not have cable/satelite because we could not justify the expense. Those are our luxuries. Rarely do we go out to a movie or to eat. We never go on vacation. We pay our bills. That is our life and we consider ourselves fortunate because we know people who lost their family farms, homes, or businesses because someone got sick and nothing permanent like I have. One farmer lost everything when he had a heart attack. They now live in subsidized housing. His heart is better and he could farm again, but there is no way they can afford to buy another farm. We were a two job family. He had put me through a four year university and we had finally bought a house after finding a job in a community that we were happy in settling into. We were not lazy. We did not expect free public aid. We were working and paying our bills. Then I got my SCI. Not by any super traumatic injury. I moved a table and my disk slipped and crushed my spine. From that point on, we were at the mercy of everyone. We had no control. We almost lost our house which was a starter house in a neighborhood between the good and bad areas. We were planning on renting it out after we bought a bigger house in a better location. Nope. All our plans changed. Every week that I was in the hospital was costing us over $10,000 for the hospital room alone. That didn't cover doctors, medications, or equipment. In the short five weeks that I was there (I say short because many SCI survivors stay much longer) the medical bills racked up to twice what we owed on our house. Thankfully, the injury happened at work. We had to get a lawyer, but finally workman's comp took care of most of the medical bills that acrued during that time. There is nothing like a quick court case when it comes to insurance paying their fair share. Because they took so long and because my lawyer kept track of my medical bills during that time, we didn't go bankrupt. As I said, we almost lost our house, but we were lucky. We went from a two paycheck family down to a one paycheck family. Because my husband was working to pay for my medical bills (vacations are not in our vocabulary) and to keep us sheltered (food often was the last to purchased. There were times we lived on PB J or macaroni in soup base) we never qualified for any aid. I can hear people say now, but you husband had a job. Again, when over half a monthly salary goes for my medication without counting my doctor visits, equipment, or rehab services, there isn't much left for mortgage, car payments (we literally drove our cars until they quit and died). As I posted, food was the last item to be purchased with our funds and sometimes we

Sometimes, when I am in too much pain to do anythinug, listening to an audio book is a way to distract myself. Also, when I'm doing good, I can listen to a book on tape while I sit and try to clean something. Otherwise, if I read a book, I don't get much done because I am unable to leave a good book.
