[QUAD-L] Fwd: Go Forward: April 2007
** See what's free at http://www.aol.com. --- Begin Message --- Go Forward: The email newsletter of the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation. April 2007 * Learning to Walk...a Second Time * "C'mon, Tim, c'mon! You can do it! You can do it, Tim." He recalls he could practically hear his family and friends as they silently urged him to take his very first steps...toward his birthday cake! But Tim was not a toddler reaching a developmental milestone. It was an even more wondrous event... Tim had been paralyzed from the shoulders down in an automobile accident on November 6, 2003. When doctors talked to him about his prognosis, his first words were: "I'm gonna walk again. I'm gonna walk!" Now, on his 20th birthday -- through determination and countless hours of hard work -- he is taking his first steps again! Tim is one of the thousands of heroes we are so proud to support at the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation...read on to find out why: http://www.christopherreeve.org/learning * Consortium Associate Chosen to Receive Grant * Sharon Matheny, who is a postdoctoral fellow in Luis Parada's laboratory at UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, was recently awarded one of the Foundation's two-year individual research grants. Partial support for this award was provided by a generous gift to CDRF from the Sam Schmidt Paralysis Foundation. As a graduate student, Dr. Matheny, who is also a CDRF Consortium Associate from the Parada laboratory, investigated molecular signaling in cancer cells, which communicate differently than normal cells do. Her participation in the Consortium led her to realize such studies in spinal cord injury could be very helpful. The complexity of spinal cord injury means that combination drugs that attack at multiple levels must be developed. Armed with the appropriate molecular information, researchers will have the tools to construct next-generation "smart" drugs that are individualized for type, severity, and time of injury. And, since Dr. Matheny's project is focused on revealing potential pharmacological targets, the information yielded will be extremely valuable for concise, efficient experimentation in translational animal models. It is her hope that this work will contribute to the develoment of effective treatments for spinal cord injury. * Peter T. Wilderotter Named New CDRF President * Early in April, Peter Wilderotter was appointed to the presidency of CDRF. As leader of CDRF, Wilderotter's priority will be to continue the critical work spearheaded by the late Christopher and Dana Reeve. "Peter has the vision for building the Foundation for long term viability and is dedicated to our mission to care and cure the millions of Americans living with paralysis," said Peter Kiernan, Chairman and CEO, Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation. "Peter is known throughout the industry for his gift of bringing talented people together in exciting and constructive ways. His proven talents and fundraising track record make him the perfect choice." * Join Team Reeve in the ING New York City Marathon * The Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation is extremely proud to partner with New York Road Runners in their Charity Partners Initiative. The program allows individuals interested in running the ING New York City Marathon to apply for a guaranteed entry through the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation in return for a fundraising donation of at least $3,000. These entries are for those who have not been accepted into the marathon either by qualification OR lottery. [QUAD-L] Seeking Help
Hello Sir/Madam My name is Richard Gaskin or Professir X, I am a paralyzed inspirational and motivational entertainer of spinal cord injury. By my relationship with using writing songs and creating videos involving education and entertaining, I understand the emotional impact the injured person and their family suffer from the day of becoming paralyzed and throughout their life struggles being paralyzed. Instead of laying in bed with depression, the friends that stood by me and myself decided there needs to be some awareness provided for those who just got injured. Many people suffer denial, depression and anger and are not ready to hear about the things that can assist and improve their lives. I am looking to have the opportunity to show the world life goes on. Through my music I hope to achieve many goals towards inspiration. I'm seeking a sponsor to assist me in the project, please view my website and links to videos I have done. Please help me find a sponsor to help me continue my purpose , please call, info below.
