2024-07-05 Thread Todd D
I had 2 vein surgeries on both legs and still had problems. I'm c6 from
1989, went to wound specialists for a while and ended up wearing a 2 layer
compression bandage system from my toes to knees. There are different
brands, some are 3 layer, Coban is the expensive brand. Carewell has them
for 19, Honest medical for 12, or I get them through my insurance vendor.

I wear them for about two weeks at a time. I've been doing this over a
year, my left foot and my one of my left toes still get swollen.

[QUAD-L] AD while urinating update & life insurance question

2015-07-30 Thread Todd Daugherty
Hi all,

After a few bowel movements over a two day period my symptoms have gone
away. I am still going to the urologist but reschedlued it for a later
date.

As for the insurance, at my work I have about 450k of life insurance and am
trying to get another 500k 15-20yr term but my quote from Zander was denied
by everyone.

Any ideas on how to get another 500k so I can be at the recommended 10-12x

Re: [QUAD-L] Fertility question

2014-01-06 Thread Todd Daugherty
I just want to chime in and say pregnancy is not a 50/50 chance. The estimate
for chances of getting pregnant are 20 percent to 30 percent per menstrual
cycle. (Harvard Med School). Even then, the chances will vary depending on
a number of factors (including age, current and past medical problems,
certain medication use, timing of intercourse, and the fertility of one's
partner) but many healthy, fertile couples are not pregnant even after six
months. It is common that couples only need to wait a bit longer and learn
more about the best time to have intercourse (based on the woman's
menstrual cycle, or ovulation pattern).

If vibro stimulation did not work I would think it is not being
administered properly or use a different model device that has proven to
work for others. We were able to do it the normal way so my story won't be
of help.

Re: ARTICLE Re: [QUAD-L] Quad taken off vent dies

2013-11-08 Thread Todd Daugherty
The more I think about this the more angry I get at the family. Even if
the doctor said he might be vent dependent, what kind of family wakes their
kid up from sedation to ask him if he wants this? Of fucking course he does
not want this and if someone did that to me in my first few weeks I could
have very well said the same thing. Heavily sedated, confused, paralyzed,
vent in, newly injured with no certain prognosis yet, and I have the
knowledge to make this kind of decision? And what's the rush? If 3-6
months go by and you feel the same way, by all means pull the vent out but
wow the way this went down doesn't sit well with me. There may be more to
this we don't know, but many quads I know have started on vents and gotten
off. I'm sure many people have said they didn't want to live their life in
a chair but when it becomes reality there are too many emotions,
adjustments, learning that needs to take place it seems before you can make
life/death decisions imo.

3. How long were you in the hospital? 10/89 - 2/90
4. How long were you in Rehab - same
5. When you went home, were there minor or major conversions necessary?
Finished basement off, added bedroom, rollin shower, stair lift, bought van
with lift, built ramp in garage
6. Did you go straight home or a nursing home first? straight home and back
to senior year high school
7. What was your home waiting for you doable medical equipment wise?
8. How many of your "friends" were there to be by your side? 2, ironically
my 'best friends' were not around
9. How many siblings do you have to help you out when you first got home? 1
brother but he did not help
10. Did you feel you had enough rehab or did you go on to outpatient rehab?
I felt like it was sufficient but continued at Emory and then moved out
west for 6/hr day intensive, but by four years post i was working and not
rehabbing any longer.

[QUAD-L] anniversary

2013-10-08 Thread Todd Daugherty
blah blah blah, 26 years, blah blah. on to the next one...

this got me thinking though what i've done in that 26 years, starting from
a 17yr old kid...

-finished high school with my class
-went to college
-got a van to drive
-drove across country
-opened a business (closed a business)
-got a computer job
-got laid off and rehired 3x
-found a better computer job
-got married (divorced)
-had child
-bought house (foreclosed)
-found better computer job

So now just working and parenting a 10-yr old and up to my ears in debt.
I suppose there are a few things I would have done differently!

[QUAD-L] http://www.projectwalkatlanta.org/

2013-09-20 Thread Todd Daugherty
http://www.projectwalkatlanta.org/

So I just found out about this place in my backyard, but it is out of my
reach financially. They have three options, the cheapest is 15 hrs of
therapy and a home program to go home with (which seems pointless
considering the specialized equipment they have in-house), or for $1,000
more, a family member can be trained to do your home program. If your
local or can stay a while, it's just $100/hr flat. You would require a min
of 9hrs a week ($900) imo to see some significant improvement. I didn't
see anything about insurance coverage.

Estimate of the costs for a 5 Day Program:

Program: Home Program
Hours: 3 hours per day ($100 an hour)
Costs Hours: $1,500.00
Materials: $ 500.00
Total: $2,000.00

Estimate of the costs for a 5 day program:

Program Family Track
Hours: 5 hours per day ($100 an hour)
Costs Hours: $2,500.00
Materials: $500.00
Total: $3,000.00

Estimate Cost of Program:

Since the In-House program is designed for clients who are able make a
long-term commitment to having regular sessions with their SCI Recovery
Specialists in our Atlanta, GA facility, it is impossible to determine an
average cost. Each client will determine how often and how long their
sessions will be based on their needs and resources. However, the rate of
$100 / hour still applies to their recovery sessions while at Project Walk
Atlanta.

Well, how about from the car insurer perspective, any chance they use this
to deny a future claim? I just said no and moved on.

[QUAD-L] Driver license renewal

2013-09-04 Thread Todd Daugherty
I got my drivers license on my 16th birthday, just a regular class C with
no restrictions. I was injured at 17, but never made any changes to my
license, even for the years that I was using hand controls.

Recently I went to change the address online and ran across this question...

* Have you ever had seizures, fainting, heart trouble, hearing problems,
musculoskeletal performance problems, or respiratory function problems?

So my question is when I say yes to this, what do you all think this will
trigger? Another driving test?

[QUAD-L] Re: Quitting Muscle Relaxers

2013-06-21 Thread Todd Daugherty
Don,

>From the time of my discharge in '90 to '91 I took 20mg of Liorsal 4x day
and was a zombie. During that period I had gotten some movement back in my
right foot (toes) and the muscle relaxers were completely taking that
away. As much as I probably needed them, over the next year/two I was
getting movement back in my right leg and was limiting myself to one dose
at night before bed. Over the years I continued to gain movement and
strength, and eventually just stopped the evening dosage. I spent a few
years after college using the CFES on my legs both at an outside rehab and
at my own facility that no longer exists. I was riding the CFES bike
multiple miles per week which was helping to increase my circulation and
reduce atrophy, and while I think it helped my spasticity I can't say for
certain. I am assuming that the incompleteness of my injury is also why I
don't suffer as much because I have seen other quads around my level that
really suffer. There are times when I am ill that they get bad, and my
doctor prescribed me Baclofen after I complained to her once but they are
sitting in my cabinet unopened. Before I had my son, which was almost 10
years ago, I found that 420 would kill my spasms without taking away my
limited leg movement (which i need to drive, transfer, just about
everything), and it increased my appetite (I am 6'1 140lbs). Too bad it is
not legal here in Georgia.

Re: [QUAD-L] Fwd: [SCIC] Re: File - Buying an accessable van.doc

2013-03-14 Thread Todd Daugherty
Here's my van story :)

I was hurt in '89 and got about 70k total, so we used some to modify our
basement, and also bought a minivan with side lift. After a few years of
being driven around I had a swivel seat installed and hand controls. I
drove that van to college, about a 6 hour drive and a few years after that
drove on my own from Atlanta to Vegas for a 6 month therapy session. The
engine died in Oklahoma City and I had to stay in the Bates motel until
morning when I towed it to a dealership. A few grand and days later I was
back on the road again. I started having lots of electrical issues with
the lift and decided I wanted a car instead. After 10+ years of taking my
chair apart and using a car I'm ready for a van again. Holy cow are they
expensive, can't even afford a used one.

[QUAD-L] SSI disability

2013-03-08 Thread Todd Daugherty
It it possible to apply for benefits while I am still employed and use the
next 9 months as my trial period? I was injured at 17, am 40 now, work
currently full time and have never received benefits

Social Security work incentives at a glance

*Trial work period—*The trial work period allows you to test your ability
to work for at least nine months. During your trial work period, you will
receive your full Social Security benefits regardless of how much you are
earning as long as you report your work activity and you continue to have a
disabling impairment. In 2013, a trial work month is any month in which
your total earnings are over $750, or if you are self-employed, you earn
more than $750 (after expenses) or work more than 80 hours in your own
business. The trial work period continues until you have worked nine months
within a 60-month period.

Christmas time is the worst (especially malls) because stores fill their

I felt like that TODAY as a matter of fact. Spent two hours this morning
showering, putting on my nice work clothes and five minutes after getting to
work I had a bad bowel accident. Spent the next 4 hours coming home and

Re: [QUAD-L] Working in an office?

2012-10-07 Thread Todd
I am C6 and have been working 40+ hours as a software tester for 10+ years. I
keep extra supplies in my desk drawer and in my car, a sweatshirt/jacket
because our office gets cold, an extra change of clothes in my trunk. My
company put in a push button door opener for me (I am the only wheelchair user)
both where I enter/exit and at the restroom. I didn't really need it or request
it but it helps for sure. I also keep a poncho around for rainy days.

Yesterday was my 23rd accident anniversary and also started full time at age 23
(40 now).

Good luck!

[QUAD-L] Shoulder pain

2012-09-20 Thread Todd Daugherty
I am C6 inc functionally and use a manual chair always. I am transferring
in/out of a low Honda civic a few times daily, taking chair apart, etc. I
have not fallen but recently injured my shoulder somehow. I have a
piercing pain behind my shoulder blade that extends into my neck, and down
the side of my arm to my elbow. The pain down the side of my arm feels
like a pulled tricep or deltoid. I can still do daily activities with some
pain, but when it comes to putting all my weight on it to transfer (from a
low to high place), it is weak, painful and sometimes gives out
mid-transfer. Could an ER diagnose something like this or should I see a
specialist? It has been staying the same and not getting better over 2
weeks, using ibuprofen and heat.
Thanks,

Todd

I think we would all agree that any minute thing that makes our lives more
bearable is a good thing and in no way is meant to mean anything negative
towards those in worse situations. That being said, I did hate those cocky
paras whizzing up and down the hallways when I was in Shepherd Center. That was
over 20 yrs ago though

This was obviously a jab at my post. I said I was 'blessed' to get back one
finger YEARS later, not complaining. And I have every right to complain as
much as any quad. We all have $&@?'ed up bodies, just on different levels. So
if I'm not a complete high level quad I can't complain about anything??

I will never forget being in the hospital and having OT come in and work on
putting a cassette tape into a boom box. She probably wished she hadn't come in
that day. Radio ended up on floor in pieces. Have to agree on the hands issue.
After a few years, was lucky enough to get back my index finger and thumb on

Yes i forgot to say that I live in downtown Atlanta. I am always by myself
and drive a car so it takes me a little longer to get my chair taken apart
and in the car. There are a lot of people from all walks of life that will
approach you to offer help, most of the time legitimate folks. I always
kindly decline but some will have other motives, like asking for money
usually.

How do you guys/girls protect yourself? I went and looked at guns and
while i could grip it good i could not pull the trigger. I keep a small
buck knife in my carrying bag but that's about it. I feel pretty
vulnerable in some places, especially in parking lots where it takes me a
few minutes to get my chair in/out and my door is open. I've had homeless,
etc come up to me during this time, and once I accidentally left my
passenger door unlocked and one of them just got in and sat down, asking
for money/ride. Took me a few minutes to talk him out. Tazer maybe?

[QUAD-L] ADA ramp at courthouse

2012-08-14 Thread Todd Daugherty
I went to my local city courthouse this morning and they have a long sloped
walkway that goes up to the door, and the door has a handicapped entry
thing. The problem is that in order to even get to the bottom of the long
sloped walkway (which appears in compliance), on each side of it there are
steep sidewalks that go down to the handicapped parking. Where the curb
cut ramp was, there was probably 3 feet of REALLY steep, almost flipped my
chair backwards even leaning forward with my stomach on my legs pushing.
Whoever can get up that one (paras obv), then there is another 20ft or more
of less steep walkway, but still much steeper than the long sloped walkway
up to the door. Is there anything I can do that will actually get a
response? Thanks

so badly that Dr.s have said it hurts to look at my X-rays. Now, my bones
and floating organs make lifting and moving in my chair almost
 unbearable.
Tell your Dr. to read up on AD if your a quad. If you're a paraplegic you
shouldn't have AD. This doesn't mean you have no pain issues. You might
 try a physiatrist.

I've been on 5mg (2x/day) narcotic for over 10 years.
I've been having more pain and asked my latest doc(very rural town) if she
 would up my meds.
She told me that "narcotics are not prescribed to parapelgics" and the
only reason she writes me a script because I've been on them so long.

I disagree with her. I would like to hear how many on this list do or do
not take narcotics. If do, how many pills&mg?

I built a quick survey with 3 questions. You can see results at end of
 survey.

By the way, I'm a C5/6 quad, not a para. Not only her but the next towns

my neck myself. I do plan to switch drs but I want to educate her & others
in the future with survey results.

A local hospital was able to refer me to a wound specialist Hyperbarx i think
was the name. Have an appt 8:30 tomorrow decided not to go to ER. Cleaned
everything and covered with duoderm until then. Bruised and raw looking skin in
some areas but nothing open yet. I recently spent 7+ hrs in dental chair for
sedation appointment, thinking that might be partial cause.

Re: [QUAD-L] medical bill

2012-05-01 Thread todd . daugherty
As much as I would like to have more accessibility to healthcare, the more I
look at the financial implications of his plan, the more I feel like as a whole
it will be more detrimental to the country than helpful. Forcing insurance
companies to take people with pre-existing conditions, fines for companies and
individuals who don't get coverage. Private insurance premiums will most
certainly be raised for those that have it. How can expanding coverage to over
30 million new people possibly lower costs?

27 billion of new taxes on drug companies, 20 billion on medical device makers.
Those costs will just pass through to us in my opinion.

Total of 18 new taxes estimating 503 billion in revenue. New taxes may bring
revenue but they will also (also my opinion) slow economic growth which we
desperately need right now.

I listened to the oral arguments on the Supreme Court website and it seemed the
justices were pretty skeptical of the constitutionality of it.

Cheers,

[QUAD-L] Re: New wheelchair?

2012-04-02 Thread todd
Hi everyone,

Sorry it took me so long to respond to the questions I received about my
post bellow. The GB motors are still available according to Invacare
customer service but my local DME provider says it is for a limited time
but they have no idea when the limited time will end, could be months or
years. They think they will be discontinued because most insurance will
not pay for the upgrade because the GB motors are not necessary for indoor
use and most insurance companies think wheelchairs are for inside use and
not outside use.

I have had 2 Invacare Storm Arrow wheelchairs and the last one had GB

We are talking about hand cycles here, not something like computerized
functional electronic stim bikes, or the likes. I don't buy the research
and engineering costs argument in this case. There is nothing 'new' about
this technology, if you even want to call it that. It is chain driven with
magnetic resistance. Some may have fancy digital displays or whatever, but
1,500.00? These people should have their necks broken

I ran my own rehab & research center for several years with Steven
Petrofsky that included all of the latest FES and adapted equipment. These
prices are inflated not necessarily to hurt the disabled consumer, rather to
bilk the insurance and medicare for max dollars.

I am about to begin the process through CIGNA to get an uppertone exercise
machine covered. Over the phone, before even sending the pre-authorization

don't recognize that this is a necessity for a quad puts me on TILT!

Since I live in Atlanta I contacted Shepherd about their 'Beyond Therapy'
and was pretty disappointed. They wanted 850+ a week for 9 hours of
therapy, no insurance and a 9-month waiting list. The bigger this place
gets, the less they care about individuals and their needs. 3-month wait
for appointments, and they actually put a parking deck in, and to get out
you have to literally get out of your car and put a coin in to exit. Even
able bodied can't reach from inside and have to get out. Then security
gives me a hard time when they have to come out and assist. Pure genius!

On a happier note, CIGNA did cover my titanium TiLite and I'll pick that up
this month. My daily chair was stolen so I've been in this tiny rugby chair

I will have someone with me to help with most things and to help with

bag and night bag, help transfer to bed and take off my clothes at night.
Then change my bags, get me dressed and help transfer to my wheelchair in

I will be paying out of pocket so I prefer to avoid using a Home

[QUAD-L] Condom cath

2011-02-11 Thread Todd Daugherty
I use the pop-on condoms with just regular leg bag (
https://www.edgepark.com/shopcatalog/showitemdetails.cfm?psku=509348&QTY=3&PageRef=Update&OrderID=5290584
)

Since I live alone with no assistance, i cant use the straps to attach the
bag to my shin area like im supposed to, and emptying it in that position is
a pita. As a result, everything kind of resides in the front area of my
pants. Since there is no gravity working, the condom will just fill up and
blow off, instead of going through the tube into the bag. If I am in a
bathroom, its easy to just pull the bag out and let gravity do its thing but
if i'm stuck somewhere else, there's no pint in wearing this thing because
it just doesn't work.

Is there any alternatives or a different product that would work?
