Yes. When he can (using his wireless network laptop) he will make a post now and then on the SCIC (Spinal Cord Injury Caregiver List). He has been in a very bad way. But it is not my place to speak of his personal maladies. However, the good news is that he thinks the doctor is going to release him from the hospital today or tomorrow. I think he has been in there for over a month or much longer so it will be wonderful when he is able to come home for good! He's a great guy! Well, Dave and anyone else interested ... We were down to choosing the Medicare Part D plans from AdvantraRX or Healthnet or Humana or NONE! Yesterday we finally decided on Humana and chose the $53.54/month plan because of my costly drug situation. My meds add up to over $4000 a yr so, despite the small co-pays ... this plan should help enough to sign up with it. We signed up AT Humana.com Hope we made the right choice! Re: [QUAD-L] Dave K - Part D
All you need to qualify is part a or b. Income has nothing to do with eligibility. If you don't sign up you're penalized 1% per month that you are not enrolled when you eventually do. The doughnut hole refers to the out of pocket costs for your medications. Basically you have a premium and deductible and some amount of co-insurance. I think some plans have higher premiums and no deductible. Your out of pocket costs determine the co-insurance. I think it's 25% between a-b 75% between b-c 100% between c-d (the doughnut hole where you pay full price for your medications ) and 5% over d (catastrophic coverage ) I know d is 3600. You'll have to check here for the other amounts. http://www.medicarerights.org/newlawframeset.html Eric Lori Michaelson wrote: Hi Dave, We're here too stewing over what to do. Re: [QUAD-L] Dave K - Part D
Hi Lori, Yeah, I received that letter too. It doesn't really explain anything, but does make it seem you need to do something right away. Remember, you are not just picking a plan for the meds you are buying TODAY, you are picking a plan that will cover meds you might need TOMORROW! I found a list of companies that will be offering a plan in TX at http://www.medicare.gov/ then click on, Compare Medicare Prescription Drug Plans, then on the next page on the tab at top, Plans in Your State, then find Arizona in the box State/Territory: Select a State. OR at http://www.medicare.gov/ click on Landscape of Local Plans, then click the State you want then click on Stand-Alone Prescription Drug Plan (PDP) Organizations. From what I've read the PDP is what someone with Basic Medicare will use. I called everyone listed for Texas so am expecting a lot of mail. You do need to have a plan picked-out BEFORE Jan 1, 2006 IF you want the plan to start on the 1st. You can enroll in a plan starting November 15. Medicare will have an online Enrollment Center available on that date at www.medicare.gov. You can also enroll by calling the plan's toll free number, by mailing in an application to the plan, or by visiting the plan's website. Coverage begins January 1, 2006 if you join a plan by December 31, 2005. The deadline to enroll to get coverage next year is May 15, 2006. Good luck! [QUAD-L] Dave K - Finding a Plan - No way!
Hi Dave and many of us! I'm sure you saw this but, if not This week the CMS launch of the Plan Finder fell flat on its face. The most important function of the plan finder was that it would allow patients to enter medications they need into the plan comparison tool to see which plans best cover those drugs. Surprise: it doesn't work. The Plan Finder is full of inconsistencies, footnotes and fine print. * At least some data is incorrect. Several of the stand-alone plan formularies are incorrect. For example, while the Plan Finder shows one plan's formulary as having two tiers-where consumers pay different coinsurances for different drugs-the web site of the company offering that plan shows its formulary has no tiers. Information in the plan-finder tool even conflicts with CMS's own " Landscape of Local Plans (http://www.medicare.gov/medicarereform/map.asp) " charts, also available on the Medicare.gov web site. * State Pharmaceutical Assistance Programs (SPAPs) are not listed as a type of drug coverage. When consumers select from among the different types of current prescription drug coverage available, SPAPs are not listed as an option. In some states, SPAPs have been designated as creditable coverage, which means those SPAP members do not have to, and perhaps should not, enroll in Medicare prescription drug coverage. * "Additional Help" provides little help. The "Additional Help" question about Extra Help, Medicare's low-income subsidy program for Part D, paying for Medicare prescription drug plan costs does not explain the low-income benefit, indicate what income limits are necessary to qualify or provide any link or further information so that people can apply for Extra Help. * Data is incomplete. When consumers view the plans available to them in their zip code, the number of plan options does not correspond to the plans listed. If the Plan Finder can't accurately navigate the myriad of plan options available to the 43 million Americans with Medicare, then how are people with Medicare and their families supposed to figure it out?

Hi Eric, I'm really sorry to hear about your friend's wife. I'll keep them both in my thoughts and prayers. As far as finding a lift, I've seen a few on eBay but no way of knowing the condition they're in until you use them awhile so wouldn't want to pay much. There are Internet Sites that sell them and they have a warranty so I'd feel better buying through them. If you can get you Dr. to write the 'script' you can get Medicare to pay because it's DME (Durable Medical Equipment) so get the power lift if you can. Medicare takes about two years after a person qualifies for SSDI. I would suggest talking to someone at your local Hospice about a used Hoyer. They will be able to direct you to someone that might be able to help. I hope this helps. LOL Ya, being disabled makes one eligible for Medicare but one has to apply. Then it's 2 years to wait unfortunately unless one is over 65. Either way the Medicare amount is based on how much he earned when he DID work. If they have a low income then they can be eligible for MediCAID virtually overnight which will get him home health aides quicker. We're only getting a small glimpse of their whole picture situation. If she has questions ask her to call her local Social Security office first too (on eligibility). If she has net access ... most answers are found at www.ssa.gov I have to apply (like today) on that site for a discount on the proposed New Medicare Prescription Plan http://ssa.gov/prescriptionhelp/ What a hassle this new plan will be unless it WILL help pay for prescriptions. Since MediCARE does NOT right now. ALL MediCAID recipients will have to switch to this plan too if I understand correctly. Re: [QUAD-L] Dave K and Lori
At the Independent Living Center I once worked at we had a 'loan closet.' Everything from commodes to walkers to manual wheelchairs to lifts. People would donate these items to our center and we'd loan them out so have her call her local ILC or CIL as a start. If they don't have a lift ask her to ask them to direct her to places that might have one. Do net searches too. Unsure where she lives but these are good prices FOR MEDICAL EQUIPMENT! Mine is the 2nd lift down on this site. And my hydraulics care going so I too may be ordering from them. Free shipping! Maybe the accept insurance too. Dunno::: http://www.southwestmedical.com/AB1588000/showprod.cfm?&DID=7&User_ID=2058907&st=7529&st2=-38093901&st3=61848923&CATID=9&ObjectGroup_ID=26 Many individuals have loved ones who pass on and need to get rid of equipment like that. I found my electric hoyer via the newspaper. I keep it for back-up as old faithful is easier for ME. If she needs help and is a church member ... ask for help there. WWW.TheFamilyCaregiver.org has a host of tips on what to do. I take it family is unavailable? Eric ... these are common sense answers ... where are you? So all of you who have been in a comfort zone ... wake up and be aware of the 2006 plan! His wife is his only caregiver. I thought she was just getting burned out. Apparently she has cancer and the chemo has rendered her too weak to get him out of bed. They don't have a lift. As long as I'm on the subject, anyone know where to find a used hoyer? So any additional thoughts you might have would be appreciated. Doesn't being disabled automatically qualify one for Medicare? If so, how long does it take to cover you after you apply? I thought I saw something in a newsletter about a waiting period. Thanks Eric
