VPG was another government debacle. they received $50 MILLION from the Dept. of
Energy to try to build an accessible mass transit/paratransit vehicle to
eventually run on CNG. They really tried to get this thing out there without
doing much market exploration. Their premise was it was going to be better than
a 'modified' minivan because it was designed and built from the ground up. They
gave a bunch away to places like the Rehab Institute of Chicago, etc. It really
was a junkbox. One air bag, no passenger seat, road like a lumber wagon,
heat/AC was awful and built like garbage. The President of VGM is now working
for a Bus Co. and these guys will never be back and somebody's pockets are much
fuller as a result. For the money that was given to VGM, all of us could have
new vans and live in new accessible homes!!

Yes VPG, was an investment group (profit oriented). Its only assets were

I looked into the MV-1 and had high hopes for it. But, as was stated earlier,
it was designed for mass transit, not the consumer market.

It got horrible mileage [12 mpg?]
Drove and felt like a tank [good or bad, depending on your situation],
and had a clumsy ramp and door setup.

I hope they regroup under bankruptcy protection and then find a better design.

Don.

Re: [QUAD-L] mv-1 mobilty vehicle is no more

Ron, I had the opportunity, almost a decade ago at the National BusCon Show
in Chicago and LasVegas to meet with the owners and management of a new
emerging company. I think they were based in Washington State and later
moved to Florida as they developed engineering ideas for a new type of
vehicle a Taxi Cab for the commercial market. Back then, they were
pushing the
idea to have new skins for the fenders and doors making damaged pieces
easy to change out. Over the years I saw and touched several proto-types and
then the choice to built the vehicles in SouthBend -AMC Plant.
All they would discuss, back then were taxi and the taxi market. When the
suggestion of making the vehicle available to the consumer market, it
wasn't discussed or thought of.
Later the idea of also addressing the para-transist market was considered
as they tried to use the consumers to demand to their taxi providers to
purchase the MV1.
When they released that the taxi market was more then they could handle and
their vehicle was not accepted, they began looking elsewhere into other
markets. They consumer market was their very last resort and their finale.

Ron, actually the company is up for sale and yes has stopped making the
MV-1 in SouthBend, IN. The investment group that owned the company was not
making money and many of the original investors chose to take their
investment to other ventures. The original principals of the business left.
The
company lost its perspective, when it didn't get the Taxi Contracts they had
hoped for. I hope for the best for VMI, for attempting to take on the
task of servicing vehicles from a failed company.
