Re: [QUAD-L] uti infections that require IV drugs
I had a significant amount of bladder stones removed about two years ago and since then I have had two or three minor UTIs. I went for an extended period of time without needing treatment for a UTI prior to getting the bladder stones, but when I had them, I was consistently getting UTIs until they were removed. Irrigation does help, but make sure you do not infect your bladder when you are doing this. Make sure whoever is doing it has washed their hands thoroughly and is wearing gloves. Also it is important when washing the stoma to have a person clean in a circular motion trying to clean outward. That way you do not have anything entering the stoma site. I would also pay heed to John's suggestion about backflow. I had a problem with this during my first couple of years and once I rigged up some solutions so my urine would consistently drained down it significantly minimize my UTIs. Quadius PS I have had my suprapubic or almost 14 years now. I THINK you recall my history Danny since you I have had these similar battles. I was treated twice. Summer of 2005 (one bug alone--forgot whether it was Proteus Mirabilis or Psedemonas but I'm pretty sure it was the prior) then Summer of 2006 (both BIG BAD BUGS -- PROTEUS MIRABILIS PSEUDEMONAS). Both times requiring I.V. antibiodics. SCARY with TWO pathogens running rampant and AFTER bladder stone removal. :-( But IV antibiodics took care of THEM. The earlier the better with how aggressive these pathogens are. It's irrelevant how fast stones grow when an infection is present. Cuz, no matter what, one has the infection. Re: [QUAD-L] uti infections that require IV drugs
Dear Dan, Just curious, do you have a lot of house plants. Pseudomonas is a bacteria that is always in soil and on many plant leaves. Often, it manages to survive anti biotics that should have wiped it out. I had to take IV anti biotics and get rid of all my living plants to end that bug. Whoever cleans around your catheter needs to avoid plants, too. It is a very tough bacteria and will travel and survive conditions it shouldn't be able to. You really need to get rid of it even if it requires IV anti biotics because it can cause sepsis if left untreated. You may very well have a stone, but the doctor may not want to remove a stone while you have an infection. Stones can form in very short time periods. Your bones are decalcifying like an astronaut. Unfortunately, calcium leaves the body through the kidneys and you are at risk of kidney and bladder stones. I've had the opposite experience. I rarely get UTI's with an external catheter, but I have not been catheterized since 1996. Do you flush your bladder with sterile water between changing it? While I have never tried it, maybe colloidal silver would be more effective if used with the flush. Now, my theory on backflow. The catheters do not have anti-backflow valves where they connect to leg bag and bed bag lines that also lack anti backflow valves. The anti-backflow valves are in the bags. There is nothing preventing the lines to the bag from flowing back into you along with the bacteria that is growing in it and if it was just cleaned with clorox, just how good is that when it enters your bladder? My solution is to attach a 500cc leg bag to the catheter when it is first put in and attach your leg bag and bed bag lines. This puts an anti backflow valve at the end of your catheter and you can see how much urine or cleaning solution flows back from the lines when it is stopped in the 500cc bag. Lets face it, it only takes a fraction of a drop to reinfect you. Do not let people change your catheter that can't keep the job sterile. Exam gloves are not acceptable and sterile gloves over a year old are just exam gloves. You can call the manufacturer and find out when a batch was made and shipped. Yes, you build up resistance to anti biotics so it is important to avoid infections. STOP SHAKING HANDS! RE: [QUAD-L] uti infections that require IV drugs
Hi Dan, I went through a period of more than a year of UTIs seemingly back-to-back. I was initially treated with oral antibiotics, then injectables, then via IV. I would get an infection, be treated, then a week or two later be infected yet again, sometimes with the same bug, sometimes another. I ultimately was referred to Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville where after extensive testing they put me on a maintenance dosage of Bactrim (half the normal dosage of the antibiotic) for four months. That was about 11 months ago and I have not had a single UTI since then. Re: [QUAD-L] uti infections that require IV drugs
Nope, never heard of getting shots. S I did a Google search on injections for pseudemonas utis and found this -- http://www.springerlink.com/content/w23444xg25202712/ The last sentence under *Summary* seems to say yes for that. Never heard of that drug either. My last IV therapy drug to fight two pathogens was ZOSYN. John is correct when he said Drs may not want to remove a stone with an infection present. That was my dilemma but I HAD little choice as I had 8 ROCKS in my bladder and they HAD to come out since : A) They were causing all my previous UTIs over thge previous 6 yrs and B) They can hang on to the bugs and so NEEDED to come out. My urologist was hesitant to do the outpatient surgery when I had pathogens present but went ahead with large doses of IV antibiodics during surgery and oral ones 10 days-2weeks after surgery. This was May 2006. In July or August of 2006 both my Dr and I were distressed when I got another bad UTI with a pathogen being the bug. BACK on at-home IV antibiodics. Yes - I was scared. Thought the surgery would solve my problem. *I* only treat (if you remember) when I have a fever. Fever = BAD NEWS. Knock on wood I've not had any in a long time. I hate to say that -- jinx myself. I still check my urine Ph on occassion with the U/A strips as that was my problem for awhile after summer 2006 and it's been at a good number (6.5) and eliminated bananas from my diet as they were making my urine too alkaline (7+ Ph readings - uncool and bacteria friendly). Best, Lori (keep in touch) I'd suggest working with one Dr though On Tue, Jan 27, 2009 at 4:34 PM, Danny Hearn ddh...@sbcglobal.net wrote: THANKS LORI--- MY NEW UROLOGIST IS OUT FOR AT LEAST 2 MORE DAYS, ONE OF HIS FELLOW DOCTORS TOLD ME MY CULTURE SHIOWED I HAD PSEUDOMONAS AND I MAY BE ABLE TO GET 2 SHOTS A DAY IN THE BUTT OR GET IV DRUGS---HE TOLD ME I CAN WAIT FOR MY DOCTOR TO GET BACK AND SEE IF I'M DOING WORSE OR ??
