POWER WHEELCHAIRS, NEW VANS, and I'M GROWING!!!

** Yesterday, when my DEMO INVACARE TDX was still in the house... my husband
measured the seat pan to floor distance for the Invacare TDX and it is about an
inch lower than my current 12-year-old Permobile Chairman.

Like Quadius, when my van rocks back and forth for any reason... I also
will/can get my eyebrow area on the felt-like material of the indoor roof of my
minivan. Not to mention not being able to easily get under tables in
restaurants and home. So that inch might make a world of difference... or not.
Tough call.

** Here's an interesting tidbit of information:

Since I have pretty much been bedridden over the last year and a half
(because of my wound) ... the times that I HAVE had to get into my van to go to
the Wound Care or other places ... every time I go to get into my van it seems
like I have to bend my head down/forward further and farther each time. Then,
after I am in my van as a passenger... it seems like I keep sitting taller and
taller and taller. MAKING NO SENSE WHATSOEVER.

But when I went for my "seating evaluation" not long ago I mentioned this to
the Occupational Therapist and I think she figured out what/is was happening.
While I was used to sitting up in my chair for at least 7 hours every day ...
the spine or vertebrae are usually compressed little by little over time
(making me sit a little shorter). But having to be in bed 99.99% of the time
over the last year + that much time does not allow for any vertebrae
compression. So ALMOST the reverse has been happening over the last year! My
upper torso probably has been growing! :-)

To make it worse, I am always been "pulled up" (at least once a day) in bed
because I easily slide down in the bed on my rotating air mattress during the
day. So that stretches my upper torso as well. I don't think I would have ever
thought of that!

** And since my van is almost 13 years old (Braun Enter Van - Dodge) ... it
is also time for me to look for another van (for reasons of my own). So I have
had a minivan for the last 12 1/2 years. Before that I had 3 full-size vans
since my injury 31 years ago.

That is a whole other story/dilemma -- to stay with a minivan with all of its
pros and cons or go back to a full-size van with all of its pros and cons.
DECISIONS, DECISIONS!!! Since I have had both and already know the pros and
cons... it does not make the choice any easier! Especially when choosing a new
chair AT THE SAME TIME. One would think that might be easier but it's not.

  Are we twins Quadius?

My problem is that when someone takes a turn too quickly to the left or a speed

Oh, I most definitely did not think you did not do your research! I know you
better than that. :-)

I am just curious (and I am sure that many other people are for when they
need new chairs) WHAT chairs people are choosing and WHY.

That is great that you are getting a leg bag opener put on it!!!

What color did you pick? The DEMO that my husband brought back today is a
shiny red color around the base and the tire rims. I like the red color but not
sure right now what color I will end up choosing.

Again, thanks again for your information! And hope you get it sooner than

If you "much prefer your Permobiles over your Invacare solely due to
reliability" I would be very leery of changing. ESPECIALLY after having TWO
Permobiles to more or less prove that.

Even though the dealer for A Quantum is much closer... just curious as to
why you would want to change? Because I would put reliability first or before
getting another chair.

For example, my dealer/vendor is not exactly close by for WHICHEVER chair
I use ... but I surely want one that I know has been reliable <--- to avoid
going to the shop x-number of times.

Any idea when your Quantum will arrive? I know these days that it takes
6+ months to GET any new chair so it is just a waiting game for you or can you
call someone every once in a while to get an idea of when to expect it?

  Thanks in advance!

The best wheelchair is the one that can be repaired or adjusted in the
least amount of time. Your provider get their best deals on Permobil.

Re: [QUAD-L] Permobil or Invacare

2010-11-08 Thread Lori Michaelson
Well, I have been using the same *Permobile* *Chairman* of the last 12
years. So now it is finally time to look into other options. My biggest
complaint with the *Permobile* is that it sits too high. I can't fit under
most tables or, if I can, barely so. I don't drive but I can't see out my
van Windows which makes for poor drives (scenic or otherwise). From the
seat plate to the floor it is 18/2 inches (or close to 19 inches) and then I
have my wheelchair cushion on top of that.

Anyway, the *Invacare* chairs sit much lower so that is a plus.

Actually, my *Permobile* has treated me very well over all these years.
Which is good because they are made in Sweden and often times it will be
very difficult to get parts (even though they have a branch in Tennessee).
Fortunately, anything I have needed over the last 12 years... my vendor has
easily been able to fix and therefore I have not had to go more then one day
without my chair.

According to my vendor, if I am looking for a new chair (which I am) then *
Invacare* is probably the way to go because they had such a BIG VARIETY of
options (seating, backing, controls, etc.) and getting parts for them is
super easy compared to getting parts for a Permobile.

I was also considering the *Quantum* 600 (made by Pride Mobility) but not so
much now after my seating evaluation that was done a week ago today
(Monday).

There is nothing WRONG with going where they *Quantum* power chair ... it is
just that my vendor is telling me that Invacare is better to go with for not
only a huge amount of selections for seating and so much more as well as
easily getting parts.

However, he did say (for certain reasons I can't remember at the moment)
that perhaps I might want to stay with getting another Permobile.

My husband is in the process (as I write this) of taking a DEMO* INVARE FDX
*wheelchair back to the vendor today. I didn't even get a chance to write
here that my vendor got an Invacare FDX (latest model of the Invacare
chairs) for me to be able to try out (over this last weekend) before making
a final decision on what chair I do want. The *Invacare* *FDX* is
Invacare's latest model that has many cool features.

But when I first saw it on Friday, and over the weekend, it looks so Mickey
Mouse compared to the chair I am using. It is definitely smaller and more
compact. I easily fit into it ... it just looks so "cheap."

Anyway, my husband picked it up on Friday, brought it home, he was pretty
sure that I would not be able to reach the joystick and the controls. Sure
enough, when I got into it late Friday afternoon... I could NOT reached the
joystick port controls am therefore I couldn't try it out all weekend! So
that was a wasted trip on Friday and now he has to take it back today!

What is really frustrating is that when he was down there on Friday and the
representative was showing him everything on the wheelchair (how this
feature and that feature works) my husband mentioned that "It doesn't look
like Lori will be able to reach the joystick or controls" but the guy didn't
say anything and did not respond. But what he DID say (after my husband
said that I probably would not be able to reach the joystick or controls)
was that "They can't ALTER demos."* Well, what good is a DEMO if the person
can't use it to try it out???
*
Just another thing for my husband to have to do. And the vendor that we are
going through isn't exactly close by (with traffic and everything it is
probably 30 or 35 minutes).
*UPDATE* - As I am writing this... my husband just called me from the vendor
shop and told me that they are modifying the chair right now. So now he has
to bring it back, I have to try it out again and OF ALL WEEKS this is an
extremely busy one. So he has to worry about getting me in and out of that
chair during the 3 or 4 hour four hour timeframe that I can be up (cuz of my
wound area) as well as having to take it back to the vendor after I try it
out x-number of days.

BIG DECISIONS TO MAKE FOR AS CHAIR I'LL SIT IN FOR MANY YEAS TO COME!

Lori
