RE: [QUAD-L] Seating Options
Hi Greg I have a jay back that I got off of Ebay several years ago and it has enabled me to be stable without having to wear the chest strap and having to be constantly straightened back up. The new ones seem to be awesome so check it out and then talk to a PT and Dr. for evaluation. http://www.phc-online.com/J3_Wheelchair_Back_p/jay-3.htm Joan
RE: [QUAD-L] Seating Options
Regarding lateral support... how many seatbelts are you using? . I have two seatbelts. One is a standard seatbelt down around my waist. The second is a large padded seatbelt up around my chest, which helps my lateral supports keep me vertically in the chair. I can e-mail you a picture if you want. Re: shoulder pain... I had lots of trouble with shoulder pain, but it is getting better now that my armrests have been raised to better support my arms. Regarding a custom back: I do not like the back of my chair, since it pushes my shoulders forward. I have the aides fold a towel to place behind my spine, and it helps. -Original Message- From: greg [mailto:g...@eskimo.com] Sent: Thursday, November 17, 2011 5:55 PM To: quad-list@eskimo.com Subject: [QUAD-L] Seating Options I'm in an Invacare TDX5 and am having lots of issues with back / shoulder pains. Anyone have any good advise of chair backs and lateral supports? One issue is the lateral supports to hold my ribs straight, my spine is curving now. So my right side has to push my ribs in and the left side has to keep the right side from pushing me over. Though having those pads on my sides irritates the inside of my arms by getting in the way, but if too small they don't work well. I use a Roho cushion and it helps my butt, but it's not real stable and after 1 recline I trend to move just a bit to my left. That screws up my lateral supports from working correctly. This chair has no real frame area to attach any pad supports to keep my hips from sliding over. I've seen almost u shaped custom backs that are molded to your back. That sounds good, but I'd hate to go there then not like it and it's not like you can try it first. Anyone try one of those? I'd need it to come almost all the way around the sides, but not bother my arms when moving them around. Thanks, Greg
Re: [QUAD-L] Seating Options
Do you have a rehab seat or straight back with a cushion? Have you ever had a seating and positioning evaluation? If you have a 4 post docking seat, it go back and be rehabbed, but only after an evaluation. How old is your chair and is it covered by government insurance? Re: [QUAD-L] Seating
My wheelchair has to have a custom seat because, as the years have passed, I have become bent and twisted with severe arthritis. I have been impressed by some car seats that are incredibly comfortable. They already recline electrically. My Chair is heavily padded on the right because I fall that way and it twists me straight. It hurt like hell the first few weeks. Now, it is as comfortable as my bed. (Not saying a lot.) Re: [QUAD-L] SEATING SOLUTION
Hi Dan, My seat was custom made by Freedom Designs, Inc. Their Rep came up from Ft. Worth and took measurements, and then ordered the seat. After the seat was put on my Q6000, she did the mapping and fine tuning. I am very happy with the end results. They are in CA and on the web @ http://www.freedomdesigns.com/seats.html I hope this helps. Stay strong. I recently healed a pressure sore and am having difficulty finding a seating solution. The most recent attempt is with the Ride Designs cushion and I am having trouble with it also. I have used Jay, Roho, Aquilla and others. I do have some seating issues, pelvic obliquity and some rotation. I have been working with seating specialists unsuccessfully. Any input would be appreciated. Dan T.
