If it does not exist in the "other" scsi ID # locations,
Did you check to make absolutely sure that there is no
SCSI ID conflict with another device. If it came from
factory, it may have SCSI ID 0 unless you changed it.
You very well may have ID 0 on your start up drive already.

If I recall correctly, sometimes devices may show up anyway,
even with conflicts, but I think not always- and most likely
to be a problem if they are both on the same bus.

Also, this might sound dumb, but once in a while the cable
may not be tight depending on how you install things. If
you have one of those adapters on a "non-native" drive
(that don't connect as snug as most other drives), it can
easily loosen up if you move the drive even a small amount
after you connect the cable.

"Assuming" those are ok, are you certain that the drive is
compatible for your machine?

Did you check termination?

Live long and prosper

Yep. I was setting a Performa 475 and an Epson 740 for someone. Try as I
might, I couldn't get anything to print. Two clean OS installs later (and
much cursing on my part), just for the hell of it, I tried another printer
cable. Ta da! Printer worked.

Needless to say, it's now the first thing I check. :)

I have two of these drives myself and have used them on a variety of Macs,
both as external and internal (the Umax c600 is the only computer I've had
big enough to handle these as internal drives). As I recall, my method for
getting them formatted was to hack Apple's Drive set-up program. I could
send you the hacked program or the instructions to do it yourself if you
like. I also downloaded the user guide for the drive from the Seagate web
site. This showed me how to configure the jumpers.
As others have already pointed out, you may have a termination issue, or
some other problem with the way the jumpers are set.
Let me know if I can be of help,

dnk <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>:

I recently purchased a factory refurbished 9.1 GB
Seagate HD. It is a full height 5.25, but fits nicely in
my 950. The problem is that "HD SetUp" cannot see it in
order to format or partition it.

Try Apple Hard Drive Setup 1.7.3 if you haven't yet. This worked on my
new Seagate 18GB drive when all else failed.

Good luck.

This is my suspicion, based on the current info: being an older HD, and
being a full-height, I would bet that this HD was intended for external use.
You want to use it for internal use, which would be fine, except that the HD
is dependent on something else to terminate the chain (which it would get
via the external terminator).
>>

1) the FH Seagate drive maybe too old for Drive Setup to see it [ * ] ; I've
had the same problem with FH Micropolis drives; use HDT or another
third-party initializer,

2) the 950 is provided with a terminator on the cable end, as are the WGS 950
and WS 9150, or any other of the 950-case machines; the terminator on the
drive should be removed if of the single- or dual-inline package type, or the
TE (terminator enable) jumper, as appropriate,

3) if ASP cannot see the drive, and Drive Setup cannot see the drive, then
the drive is probably defective; SCSI drives are required to respond to the
"read device characteristics" command even if the drive spindle motor is not
powered-up,

4) given that a drive in a 950 is required to be unterminated, there is
really no difference between an internal drive and an external drive, other
than where the drive is physically located, and

5) special note for II, IIx and IIfx users ... there existed a third-party
replacement for the drive mounting bracket which would allow a FH 5.25" drive
to be mounted internally; in this case, the drive *must* be terminated as
there is no terminator on the II-series internal cable.

[ * ] However, I always try Drive Setup (1.7.3 is a good one, and is
available for download on Apple's FTP site) and it has been able to
initialize even Seagate drives which were made for OEMs.

Way to go, Russell. Your willingness to provide "lessons learned" (even
theoretically "painfully-obvious ones") is, IMHO, exercising the strength of
a list-group: to help each other out. Thanks for sharing the results.
Best regards,
Dana
P.S. - I tend to regard the bad-cable symptom as important, and NOT a
no-brainer. One of my favorite exercises for my students is to go into the
audio post-producton studio and screw up the MIDI system to quiz them on
trouble-shooting and correction. The most successful stumper hands-down:
to simply reverse the In/Out cables on the controller keyboard - gets'em
(almost) every time! :-)

Hi Don,
This is my suspicion, based on the current info: being an older HD, and
being a full-height, I would bet that this HD was intended for external use.
You want to use it for internal use, which would be fine, except that the HD
is dependent on something else to terminate the chain (which it would get
via the external terminator).
Look on the bottom of the control board, near to, and parallel to the SCSI
connection end. Do you see a tiny stream of what looks like miniature
brass-colored holes/sockets (in sets of two or three)? If so, you're going
to need to get some "resistor packs", used to engage internal termination.
Call Seagate, and see what they can do, or snoop around some PC shops for
the right size.
If this IS the case, remember that pin 1 needs matching to socket 1 - on the
resistor, pin 1 is indicated with a colored dot or insignia; on the board,
socket 1 is usually identified with a fine line, or no. 1 or a slightly
different shape from the other sockets in the set.

Though I've never tried this, it seems plausible: take your SCSI cable
(internal) plug the HD in one of the connector ports OTHER than the last,
and affix an internal SCSI cable terminator onto the last port of the cable.

Best regards,
Dana

Improper seating problems plagues these PDS connectors. They must be seated
completely. If you can feel the interface between the mobo's connector and
the PDS card's connector, and you discover the least little bit of space,
then the PDS card is not seated correctly.

Since these are gold-plated connectors, contact cleaner is neither needed nor
recommended.

Moody modem - solved!

2001-07-22 Thread Russell

Hi all

I've sussed the problem with the SupraExpress 288 modem, and as usual with
these things it was down to one of the first things I thought of but forgot
to check.

I bought it secondhand, without a phone cable, so stuck in my old
USRobotics cable. No connection. When I tried it with a cable borrowed from
an iMac it connected first time in both Open Transport and ConfigPPP. A
lesson learned - the quality of cable obviously makes a difference. That
may be obvious to many of you, but I hope my struggle saves someone else
the same trouble.

Thanks to all who offered advice.
