Re: New Kid on the Block

2002-09-25 Thread Mike Evans

You are right, apart from obtaining a hard disk (IDE) for it, ditto a CD
drive (SCSI!) and a floppy drive, you will also need sleds for all these.
Alternatively, in the meantime, just to get the thing working, you could
stuff the drives in their holes and secure them with blu-tak, sellotape
and/or rolled-up wads of non-flammable padding, or whatever... and then get
the sleds as and when you can, in the future...

I also have a Performa 630CD DOS Compatible, or did, as my parents have it
now. Although considered a pretty duff machine or 'Road Apple' (one of the
less well respected things Apple has produced), I like it a lot.

Theoretically (I haven't attempted this yet, but intend to), you can swap
the standard 68LC040 33 MHz processor (FPU-less) for a top-of-the-line full
68040 40 MHz CPU, and if you're handy with a soldering iron, move some
resistors on the motherboard to increase the bus speed to 40MHz too.
Attaching fans to the clocked chips (CPU and video) is recommended...

You are only allowed one hard drive, not two (master/slave) as on most IDE
machines, but the drive can be pretty large, as large as your OS will stand
(some people use OS 8.1... I use 7.6.1, but it's fastest with 7.1... no OS
below that will work, apparently)... many gigabytes, dunno how many is the
limit. The more the merrier, since this machine has audio/video editing
capabilities (see below).

With the DOS Compatible, at least with mine, you have 2 RAM slots for the
Mac side and one for the PC side. I believe the number of slots available on
the Mac side is variable, depending on the origin and history of the machine
(Quadra 630, Performa 630, LC 630, and whether or not CD version, and
whether or not 'DOS Compatible')...i.e. on some 630s there is only one RAM
slot on the Mac side, on others there are two... In mine I had two slots and
so I put 16+32=48MB RAM on the Mac side (one of the two RAM slots can only
take powers of two, i.e. 4, 16, 64... NOT 8 or 32... dunno why) but all 630s
also have 4 MB built-in RAM, so that made 52MB total. With RAM Doubler
(tripler) you can pretend that the total is 156MB RAM I did! On the DOS
side, I personally had 16 MB... j-u-s-t enough to run Win95 successfully,
but you really need 32 or 64 MB to run Win98SE (it's called DOS Compatible
but the 486SX 66 MHz CPU (33 MHz bus speed) will run Win98)... I tried two
different 32 MB SIMMs in the PC slot but they did not work, I think they
were EDO... or perhaps dual-something... I believe that only
single-something SIMMs work, and that FPM SIMMs are (much?) more likely to
work than EDO SIMMs, at least for the larger sizes (32, 64, 128) I think
that no larger than 32 MB was officially supported by Apple on both the Mac
and Win side, though there are stories of even 128MB SIMMs being used
successfully (on the Mac or Win side, or both, I don't know).

I'm not sure whether you can rev up the PC side, hardware-wise... I have not
seen any info regarding clock-chipping or otherwise enhancing these 486SX
33MHz boards...

It says DOS Compatible, but I managed to get Win 95 working without much
problem. The most up-to-date PC Compatibility software, 2.1.something, is
free (abandonware) off a non-Apple website. Apple themselves developed PC
Compatibility s/ware up to version 1.65, then presumably sold it on to this
company...

Sorry, I really don't know much about SIMMs/DIMMs, dual- and single in-line
packages, etc... dunno what all the terms mean... It seems you have to
master this to confidently buy memory for this machine at the larger SIMM
sizes, unless you don't mind yr purchases not working (stick 'em in a
Windows box?) Ideally, you want to be able to return the RAM if it doesn't
work, given that it seems a bit finickety...

The PC side uses the Mac's monitor, serial ports (modem / printer / webcam,
etc.), and can access all available disks, local and remote I believe (via
Mac's Ethernet card) etc., making for a highly compact 2-system machine...
if you have a large enough hard disk, you can set up various 'hard disks'
(hard files) to run different Windows systems ( I had Arabic Win 3.11 on
one, Win 95 on another, DOS 6.22 on another)...

It has a highly modular and easy-to-work-on design... the motherboard just
slides in and out, ditto the hard disk, floppy disk and CD drive all slide
in and out on trays... once you have trays. The CD drive is SCSI, the
original Apple-branded drive was 1x, but you can replace it with whatever
you want, high-speed 24x CD burner etc I assume. I still have the
original 1x, haven't got round to finding a replacement yet...

Apparently, the _external_ SCSI port (bus) is considered one of the weakest
spots, it uses some old kind of SCSI hardware/architecture (i.e. slower)
that had been upgraded in all other Macs of its generation... apparently one
of its most disappointing features... so an external scanner connected via
SCSI port might not be as wicked fast as one wld hope... still, I'm not
complaining... it seems

As long as they're 80ns or faster, they should work fine. Check GURU to see if
the 840 will read all 2MB VRAM but I don't think it does.

>2.what is the hdd max size i can fit.

Depends on the OS; the FAQ has details.

Again, LEM or the FAQ has details.

Yeah, but you'll probably lose boot capability. Toast 3.5.7 will work and is
cheap from OWC; Toast 4.x will also work but will cost more.

Sounds like your coax cabling might be suspect, or perhaps your coax
terminators. Have you tried moving the two good ones into the "middle" of the
chain and seeing if putting two bad ones on the ends makes the good and bad
computers switch?

Got it in 1. It says this in the service manual, which I have read in

Well I have a pair of 9GB drives in mine :). Really it is only limited
by what OS you use and how much you want to spend.

128MB, 4x32MB. Not bad for a machine built in 1992!

Yeh, 1x or 2x CD-R drive are available on eBay real cheap. Toast 3.1.4
I believe is a good one for 68ks but, having a combo drive in my G3, I
have never needed to investigate, sorry, that sounded terrible but I
can't help having a spiffy computer!! Get a cheap copy on eBay or the
LEM Swap List.

> the current os is 8.0 on all of the drives.

Only the drive that contains the folder called 'System Folder' has the
OS on. The others are just file storage for stuff. Do you know if it
has 3 actual hard disks in or 3 partitions? It's really hard to get 3
hard disks in there and I'd like to know how it was done. The lid is
easily removed (turn the machine off for piece of mind!), just unscrew
the 4 tabs at the back and slide the metal shell forwards.

Holly cow. It's a really nice piece of work you got there. The black
paint must look awesome.

I also love Macintosh IIci machines (I have a pretty jazzed up IIci in
my arsenal :) ). The cases look a little clunky by modern standards but
there is a charm about them I can't quite place, perhaps the easy
opening case or reversible desktop/tower option. Since the Q700 is in
the same case, apart from the front panel details, it seems fine to me
to love yours, especially in black :).

Hell no, you have put a lot of effort into your setup as it is, don't
go ripping it apart for a little extra speed and RAM. I find 68MB fine
on any 68k apart from my 840av which is a vid. cap. platform so needs
all it can get.

> Is this a viable "only" system for me at home?

H... I'm a little biased as I have a shiny Jaguarified G3/400 on my
deks and an iBook 300
in my napsack so I couldn't, I tried to use my 840av as an 'only'
system and couldn't. If you are used to it and can accept it's limits
there is no reason why YOU can't though.

I am in a similar if not nearly so badly stricken position, I had to
twist my bank manager's arm to get the £400 for my G3/400 but I'm glad
I did, at least my bank manager had a sore arm for a few hours ;).

No. There is no such thing. I believe that the more you invest in a Mac
the more it gives you back.

Probably wouldn't recognise it atall, might even damage the chips, though I

Yes, and Toast 4.12 was the last version of toast to run on a 68k machine, so that or
lower!

update it to 8.1, JUST FOR FUN ;-)

> I see little to no talk regarding the Quadra 700

Let's see a little Q700 luv!

Seriously, I dig my Q700, it makes a nice addition to
my two Q840's and my PM8500. I use it quite a bit for
surfing and development (right now I'm writing
HyperCard 2.2 apps on it). It's pretty zippy as far
as first-gen quads go, and the ability to turn it on
its side is great when space is a premium.

I concur with another post, the one annoyance is the
lack of an internal CD-ROM drive. I had to pull one
from another Mac I had to create an external drive for
it.

You can also run other OSes on the Q700, such as
Debian Linux and BSD. I'm actually getting ready to
attempt installing A/UX 3.1.1 on it, something you
cannot do with the AV Macs and later PowerMacs.
Should be fun to see if I can get gcc and Apache
running alongside my System 7 apps!

Hope this helps!

Re: Hello, Quadlisters!

2002-09-25 Thread Clark Martin

The Q700 and Q900 were the first Quadras. As such there may not be
as many of them as later models hence fewer questions. It's a
perfectly good Quadra. To me it's only determents are 30 pin SIMM
RAM and lack of a CD-ROM bay. While later Qs can have memory
expanded beyond 68M that is probably enough for most situations.
It's one of the slowest Quadras but not that much slower.

Personally I prefer OS 8.1 on Quadras. I prefer to have the Finder
UI as close my other Macs as possible, largely to protect against
errant actions.

Re: Hello, Quadlisters!

2002-09-25 Thread Scott Holder

As far as I'm concerned, the usefulness of a machine is what use you
make of it. There are people using "Road Apples" quite happily, not
caring what other people think or have said about their machines.

It sounds to me like you have a perfectly nice setup. The Q700 was one
of the first (if not the first) Quadra, which makes it somewhat dated by
the later standards, but it's still a perfectly capable machine. Your
QuadDoubler makes it even more so.

If you've put as much work into painting it, I'd hang onto it and use
it. Sure, a QuadDoubled 840AV might be faster, but it wouldn't be your
customized machine either.

Greetings!

I have been reading the Quadlist for a little while now, choosing to
"lurk and learn" for a bit before posting here.

I see little to no talk regarding the Quadra 700 thus far on this list.
Is this particular CPU just not popular here, or have I just not been
lurking here for a long enough time? I mean, is it considered to be a
less-than-good choice of '040 CPUs? I occasionally find references to
various problems regarding the flashing question mark when booting.
But, other than that, it just seems to be less popular. Why is that?
Is there something about my 700 that I am missing?

Hello, Quadlisters!

2002-09-25 Thread Wade Rackley

Greetings!

I have been reading the Quadlist for a little while now, choosing to "lurk
and learn" for a bit before posting here.

I see little to no talk regarding the Quadra 700 thus far on this list. Is
this particular CPU just not popular here, or have I just not been lurking
here for a long enough time? I mean, is it considered to be a
less-than-good choice of '040 CPUs? I occasionally find references to
various problems regarding the flashing question mark when booting. But,
other than that, it just seems to be less popular. Why is that? Is there
something about my 700 that I am missing?

So far, I have had a good bit of fun learning how to hod rod the hardware
and optimize the software. But am I missing some fatal flaw that would
make me want to migrate to another '040?

Here is my setup:

Quadra 700/50 MHz Sonnet QuadDoubler, 68 MB RAM, 2 MB VRAM, 2 GB 7200 rpm
Baracuda HD, with a 17" Apple Color Monitor, Apple 600e CD ROM Drive,
OneScanner, Personal LaserWriter 320, all PAINSTAKINGLY painted flat black
and dull-coted (looks great, too). It is running 7.1 with a few add-ins
from Gamba's site and a 7.5.5 System Folder. I use Eudora 3.1.3 and iCab
and older versions of my favorite applications. This old thing, when
running this setup, feels quite fast in the finder, is not bad on the WWW,
and is really fun for me to use.

So (again), what am I missing here? Should I get a different Quadra and
transfer my upgrades to it? Is this a viable "only" system for me at home?
I use a Lombard as my main machine, but the mother board is in the throes
of a slow death. I will then be left with this 700 "hobby" machine and my
trusty SE/30 as my only web and productivity machines until I can save up
the cash needed to buy a new Mac (which will be quite a while,
unfortunately for me...)

Have I invested too much time in a Mac that is dead end rather than low
end? HELP!!

Re: Problem w/LC 630, OS 7.5.5, comm slot modem

2002-09-25 Thread Scott Holder

Yeah, I've copied the Chooser and a couple other things, Appleshare was
included with the Extensions folder I copied. Since I'm at work and
supposed to be working I'll have to wait until later to play with it
more. The fact I've was doing it on an emulator might have something to
do with it too, though I've used Appletalk on it before with standard
installations.

I don't have a real Mac running 7.5.5 right now (All are on 7.1 or 8.1,
I still don't see a purpose for running 7.5 unless one has a program
that demands it) but I could probably install it somewhere and give it a
try.

Scott,

I did recall having to copy a few additional files
from 8.1 in order to get more stability with OT.

I believe I updated some or most of the Appletalk
extensions and control panels in kind of a
"hit-and-miss" sort of way. I wish I would have
documented my final configuration. I think I also
updated the chooser, appleshare and a few others, but
not sure if that was related to my OT
config/troubleshooting. Some items worked, others
didn't.

Craig

Re: Problem w/LC 630, OS 7.5.5, comm slot modem

2002-09-25 Thread Scott Holder

Well, I went ahead and tried it, and it works. Kinda.

First I tried copying everything that seemed to be related... But that
didn't work at all.

So, finally, I moved 7.5.5's Extensions and CPLs out of the System
Folder and copied 8.1's in. Rebooted. Went fine from there, so loaded
Netscape. Bomb, Unimplemented trap.

Rebooted, went into the TCP/IP control panel and it gave me the
Appletalk/MacIP error. I'm having trouble with Appletalk - See below, so
I put it to Ethernet, and voila, it works.

However, there is one somewhat biggie. I can't get Appletalk to start.
Gives me various errors. It seems to be related to the Ethernet driver,
I'm going to try swapping back in an older Ethernet driver to see if
that helps any.

So, looks like it mostly works. I'll report back if I get Appletalk
running.

This makes a couple of people that are looking at the possibility of
retrofitting OT from OS 8.1 to OS 7.5. I 'm curious how well this will
work. (I'd do it myself if I had the files). I hope if anyone tries it,
they will let us all know how it went.
