Re: NuBus Mac for audio

2002-12-17 Thread PsycoPunkn
The setup that was being used when I did the recording was this:

Quadra 950
PowerPro 80MHz, no memory, no cache
130MB motherboard memory
1GB 5400rpm MicroNet drives
Pro Audio Spectrum 16 sound card

Now I have 32MB installed on the PowerPro, and 152MB on the board.
Should I get more PowerPro RAM, and how much would I need if I should?
While were on the subject, and Ive asked before, how good is the quality
of the PAS16 card? Would the quality be high enough I could distribute music
that was captured by this card?

Thanks

Chris

Re: NuBus Mac for audio

2002-12-17 Thread dustinr

I've done a lot of audio recording using an AudioMedia card in a IIfx, and
never had any kind of problem with skipping. The IIfx is pretty pathetic in
power compared to the boxes you're looking at. Personally, I don't think
you're going to find the processor or bus speed to be a limiting factor in
doing the recording. Of course, if you're planning on doing any post
compression or effects type stuff, a faster processor will help.

As for your skipping problem - look into defragmenting your hard drive,
and make sure that no other apps are doing anything in the backround
while the recording is going on. Try and boot using only the extensions
that are required for what you're doing. Try turning Appletalk off.
Personally, I'm surprised you're having problems - even 48kHz sampling
rates are pretty easy on decade old hardware. My old IIfx never seemed to
miss a beat, and I wasn't running anything special.

What kind of system are you using now?

Best SCSI NuBus card

2002-12-17 Thread PsycoPunkn
Hello. I was wondering what the best NuBus SCSI card is. I think it
would either be an FWB JackHammer, or an ATTO Silicon Express IV. What are
the transfer rates of these card? Do they have one or two busses?

Thanks

PowerPro and RAM disk

2002-12-17 Thread PsycoPunkn
Hi. I have a tough question, but those are the best. I have a PowerPro
with RAM expansion installed in a Quadra 950. It has 32MB installed on it.
There is 152MB on the motherboard. What I would like is to be able to use
exactly all of the motherboard memory as a RAM disk, or at least none of the
PowerPro memory. How does a RAM disk choose what RAM it uses? If it will
try to take PowerPro memory, is there a way I can fill up the PowerPro memory
so that when the RAM disk is created it cant use any of it? Anything else I
might be able to do?

Thanks

Chris

Re: NO MORE "WARNING!" Messages

2002-12-17 Thread J Sand

Danny,

None were meant to be an attack. I get just as frustrated as you do about
email BS in my mailbox that is unnecessary if someone would bother to spend
the time to fix it so I didn't have to waste my time reading it. Next time
you have a complaint about an automated list, try sending it directly back
to the person it is from and not to the whole mailing list. That is what I
was complaining about, I don't think it was proper for me to have to read
about your "off color" remarks because of someone else's mistake, not mine.
My comments were a defense to having to read what I considered offensive. I
hope this clears up the misunderstanding your frustrations with the
automated mailing has caused between us.

John

NuBus Mac for audio

2002-12-17 Thread PsycoPunkn
Hello. I have a Pro Audio Spectrum 16 card that I will be using to
record audio to a hard drive or RAM disk. I have some questions about using
a computer for this purpose. Would it be more important to have a faster
processor speed or faster bus speed? How much would level 2 cache help?
What would be the best setting for Disk Cache in the memory control panel?
What would be the best OS to run. The processor would be between an 80MHz
601 and a 120MHz 601+. Also heres a toughy...I have found that sometimes
when I record to a hard drive, the recording will skip, whereas when I record
to a RAM disk it doesnt, or at least not as often. However, the RAM disk is
only about 130MB in size, which is good for maybe 25 min of audio (right?).
Is there a way I can record to a hard drive but use the RAM as a buffer, so
it records quickly but then copies to the hard drive and clears out the RAM
disk of whats already has been copied. I have a SCSI card which I guess can
back up drives automatically or something, maybe I could use that on the RAM
disk?

Thanks for any help

Chris

Oh common you have to resort to name calling and trying to insult me just
because I said something out of frustration that I received 20 "Warning"
mails today, and I would think that the maintainer of these lists would read
them to so stop with the personal attacks before I start and for your father
saying that well do I care about that?! another personal attack you brought
up, well good for you if you can only resort to these attacks shows how
mature you are.

I agree with you pickel, but when someone doesn't even know how to spell
"DAMN IT" correctly, I don't think they will understand they are complaining
to an automated email program. Computer illiteracy abounds! I didn't know
"GOD" sent spam by email. As my deceased Father told me, "A man only swears
when he doesn't have the mentality to say anything else." He should show
some courtesy towards others on this list with his limited use of vocabulary
skills! Anger expressed at a machine is not a very bright understanding of
the reality of the web!

I don't suppose you ever considered *following* the instructions in the warning
message, did you?

Nah, that never would have occurred to someone so thick as to complain about
Swaplist warnings on Quadlist.

Or maybe try e-mailing the address given for the list administrator, or reading
the netiquette page. It would do you some good.
