In other words you don't know. The honest to god good reason being the
only thing you can damage by wiring up a Cat5 ethernet cable wrong is
to your self esteem when you realise you need to cut the end off and
crimp on another connector. The voltages used are not great on
ethernet, and it has fail-safes to stop bad wiring blowing it up anyway.

There that saved your ass ;).

Do you have a answer to the question, what damage is caused by using the
wrong cable? Never seen smoke with serial or ethernet with the wrong

Evidently you are not technically or electronically inclined. EXplination:

Nothing moves in a wire with out power, regardless of how much or how
little. Hence, the necessity of the "+" and the "-" requirements of the
pin outs. Quality equipment will have voltage protection circuits, but
the majority of the stuff on the market now is not Quality.

Even if the voltage, due to data transmission is only 1 volt, if it is a
"+" (positive) 1 volt and you put it to a terminal that is expecting a
"-" (negative) 1 volt, it will smoke, maybe just a little or maybe a
lot. If it doesn't smoke it could just render a few of the component in
the circuit inoperative by shorting out. Like no work anymore.

2003-01-05 Thread Michael Emery
Rob <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>:

You must have made a typo when you typed "SPAV handles
8-bit color and the SPAV handles 24-bit color".

You got it right, Rob, and I got it wrong. The SPRO does 24-bit.

I assumed that the Spigot Pro AV was in the market
before the Spigot Power AV due to the fact that the
840av was in the market before the Nubus Power Mac AV's.
But I didn't buy either one when they were new... I
assumed that the Spigot Power AV (Mark Benson mentioned
it by name) was what Radius called the Spigot Pro AV
once they added the cable.

SPAV led SPRO to the market, and by the time the SPRO appeared for about
$1000 it was soon abandoned by Radius which went through a corporate
reorg. They left the SPAV and the SPRO on our doorsteps, like abandoned
babies.

Performa630DOS card

2003-01-05 Thread Luca Pagliero
I have a Performa630 Dos Compatible with 52 Mb on MacOS8.1 and 32 Mb on DOS
Card (win98).
I use PCSetup 2.1.7
All has worked fine for a week or so, but today I tried to enter PC Setup (I
have 2 drive files and I switch one or other).
Suddenly Finder has closed down (or I think so, all icons on screen were
gone) and reopened, but PC panel won't came out
When I pressed the Apple key + Enter it switched to PC but with blank
screen (and no video sync as monitor gone into sleep mode)
What happened?
Anyone can help?

Thanks,

Don't understand how you got that. To check I simply went with iCab to
. For an exemple I searched for one of the cables
Don mentioned and found: Adapt. for periph. MD8M-DB9F (lock-in), different

Don't see any problem. And you can always send a mail with your question:
<[EMAIL PROTECTED]>.
They have an enormous catalogue, A4, 1.200 pages, with pictures, codes,

Helas, they don't ship the catalogue outside the Netherlands (probably
because the weight = 1.800 grs.?). If you are interested in for your

You need a hub, not a router, but try googling for "ethernet crossover pinout"
and I daresay you'll find something in the first 10 hits.

IMMHHTO (in my most humble and honest technical opinion) GET A

Less problems, works great, and is available for more than two

this case has it's more intelligent side.

You could try threemacs, a good overall networking reference:

Other than a massive dose of speed? Not much.

Of course, none of them are drop-in replacements either.

You need a hub, not a router, but try googling for "ethernet crossover pinout"
and I daresay you'll find something in the first 10 hits.

Yes, technically speaking, they are both made of CAT 5 cable. BUT, to
those that are not Technical or Technically inclined a "Standard CAT 5
Cable" is in Networking terms a "Patch Cable" or a "Straight Trough
Cable". This referring to the pin connections at each connector. (i.e.
1-1, 2-2, 3-3, 4-4, etc)

A difference in a crossover cable is (which ever two pins are used for
transmit and receive) are reversed only on one end. Let's say that pin
1 and 2 are transmit and receive respectfully. On one end of a
crossover cable, pins 1 and 2 would be switched.

So, as an example only, if you used a multimeter to check the continuity
of a "Standard CAT 5 Cable" pins, touching the leads to pin 1 on each
connector would show continuity. Same with 2, 3, and 4. On a crossover
cable, continuity would show between pin 1 on one connector and pin 2 on
the other, then pin two to pin 1.

Where can I get a pin description for the crossover as I have a 610 and an
iMac I need to get to talk to each other and do not have a router yet?

Technically speaking, they're both cat 5 cable as cat 5 is a description of
the cable type.

In general, though, you have a patch or straight-through cable that
connects all the pins straight through. You'd use this generally in
connecting a computer to a hub/switch.

Then you have crossover cables which swap several pins to reverse the
connections. This is useful for connecting two computers without a hub or
switch, but usually limit it to two computers.

You can subscribe to any and all (see http://lowendmac.com/) but
your postings should apply to the appropriate list. The once-removed
rule also applies, but it's generally more efficient to post to the
appropriate list.
May I also suggest you read the list FAQ, netiquette page, and policies page.

OEM-Version of the FWB Software (HD and CD) is part of OS6.1.
Hook your HD to a PC with SCSI-Adaptor, they normally have a BIOS-Tool
included to format the disk (Hit Ctrl-A on boottime with an Adaptec
Adaptor).
Hope it helps.
