Dead NuBus cards - how to revive???

2003-10-15 Thread Greg Shafritz
Hi All!

Here's a good one for those of you with a DIY technical background:

What are the most common issues that could make a NuBus card DOA? I
recently received an FWB SCSI Jackhammer that does not show up in Apple
System Profiler, and Tattle Tech also cannot detect the presence of the card
when installed.
Essentialy, this therefore is a dead card.

What are the first things I should look for in trying to repair this card?
I assume that I should first check to be sure that it is receiving power
from the motherboard - true?
Do these cards sometimes have onboard power supplies that fail?
What about blown microfuses (what would a fuse look like that wasn't a
conventional fuse) - is there such a thing as an SMD fuse?

I'm ready to dive in really deep, and I've got all my test equipment out...
who's able to help point me in the right direction as to how to proceed?

TIA (very much!)

Best wishes,
Greg Shafritz

Check the setting of the resistors first. I think, there are 4 of them.

You got the appropriate software and manuals?

Good lick! Steff

Re: Dead NuBus cards - how to revive???

2003-10-15 Thread Derek Morton
Step 1 : Check the pins on the NuBus connector of the Jackhammer. It
is relatively easy to bend the pins and if the right one is bent...
NoGo.

Step 2 : Do a visual inspection of the card for any damaged components
or leads... Perhaps verify the oscillator is working (although I do
not believe the oscillator would prevent card detection).

Step 3 : Buy a new card. I don't know what else to tell you. It is
possible to troubleshoot anything, but without a schematic (or more) it
is not going to be easy, or worth the time.

FYI : The resistors (3) mean nothing regarding the card being detected
by the OS. They are simply termination resistors. There is a Surface
mount fuse on the board (and a power supply), but I believe both are
part of the termination circuitry.

On the topic of NUBUS cards I have two lying here
doing nothing; an apple High-Res graphics card and a
network card with 10base-2 and AUI ports.

Anybody want them?

Re: Identify this Bit of Daystar History?

2003-10-15 Thread thespif
It is an accelerator for a Quadra... Either a 33 MHz or a 40 MHz 68040 processor to
upgrade a Q-700 / Q-800 / Q-900 / Q-950 and maybe a Q-650... although I have never
seen a 650. In addition to a faster CPU, it adds a 128K cache (sort of). The little
expansion connector is used to add a twin ATT DSP card giving Photoshop acceleration.

Derek
 I saw this item
 http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemitem=2758932544category=4610
while browsing Ebay. The seller claims that it's for a II, LC or
SE, but that sure looks like a Quadra PDS connector on the bottom of
the board. The thing is, I can't figure out why one would put a
 68040 upgrade in a Quadra. That's clearly a 68040 chip on the
 upgrade card.

Does anyone remember this thing? What's the scoop?

Sad Mac Code help needed

2003-10-15 Thread Hal Meeks
To all...HELP!

I just picked up a Quadra 840av a few days ago from a Swap List member the
other day and he said that the computer had booted up OK. However when I
started it up I initially got the normal startup tone then some
strange-sounding (percussion-type) audio before everything quit and no
video output. I installed a 8*24GC video card and tried again. This time
I got video output and a Sad Mac code of:

000F
000C

What is wrong? Thanks!

Hi Hal,

Have you got any old other drive kicking around that you
can pop in so as to narrow down your diagnostic perspective?

Run a few diagnostic programs on the box?

I just plugged a Cyberdrive internal into a Power Center Pro with OS 9.1 to

Hi R.A.,

I'm using 9.1 on a 9500 and I want those external players for my Quads
as you've probably figured out. . .

so do you think a copy of the Apple Driver would support 7.6.1
or am I going to have to up the 7.5.1 in my 660av to 8.1
first.

I know I have the 7.6.1 Apple Driver happening cause I just got
the Caddy-style internal CD-ROM working in the 660av. . .

If the Apple Driver I already installed in the 660av
was going to work with the new external
CD-ROM shouldn't it have done so. . . without any special moves?

I think I copied that driver over from my 9.1 so it's fairly up to date.

Thanks for the help,
Terry
