Linux is a variant of Unix more or less and both use a command line.
I am not sure if Linux 6.1 redhat will run on a 68k Mac, but I suspect not.
I know that LinuxPPC will not run a 68k Mac. :-}

OpenBSD and NetBSD and Apple's A/UX are all various "flavours" of UNIX.

Hi Scott, Did you mean 'nicer' than 9.1?
Do a search for all the bugs in upgrading a biege 604 to 9.2.x and see if its
worth it. You got to hand it to crapple for pulling the plug on the classic OS

OpenGL is a video standard, mainly used for gaming ect where your examples arn't.

If you're interested in experiments, I believe there is a version of Linux
that runs fairly well on the 950. Neither OpenBSD or NetBSD will run on it
(rats!) but Apple's A/UX will (3.1.1) and it's fairly interesting. It runs
System 7.0.1 and Unix, side by side. Plenty of downloads still out there.

Old rubbish for the main. Linux ppc Q4 is niceish and YDL is ok

I have a 660, a 605, a 7100 and a 9500/200 with 416 RAM.

Any musings and advice, oh more experienced one? :-)
MDK9.1 ppc, debain for the low end, you get colour. :)
Oh I'm sorry, I only just stopped laughing at using 9.x as a router on a
7100/66. I guess the answer "because" is enough. :) Mean while I use a 68k and
ipnr to do the same job. :)

Hi Scott,
Did you mean 'nicer' than 9.1?

What is the OpenGL architecture exactly? Is it like the computer's way of handling
graphics and video and what are the counterparts that it replaces. . . GXGraphics?
Quickdraw? etc.

I have Linux 6.1 redhat
and LinuxPPC 1999. . . on CD but I've never tried them.

What are OpenBSD and NetBSD and Apple's A/UX?

I have a 660, a 605, a 7100 and a 9500/200
with 416 RAM.

Any musings and advice, oh more experienced one? :-)

Thanks,
Terry

NO! OS 8.1 is the most recent Mac OS that will run on a Quadra.

The 950 has pretty good video. I've noticed that System 7.* is quite snappy. OS 8.1 is
nice and stable but the user interface is noticeably more lugubrious. It's what I run
mostly though. If you want the snappiest feel you might try System 7.5.5 or 7.6.1.
7.0.1 is quick but sure is primitive. OS 8.1 may allow you run a greater selection of
apps.

I just installed a PPC 601 card into my 950 and may report back if I have time to
experiment sometime soon.

I've 9.1 installed on my 7100/66 "router box" and it's just to slow on that machine
for my tastes. I believe I have 104M RAM. For routing it's fine but the user interface
is "goopy". I'd think the same would be true for an accelerated 950.

> I use 9.1 on my 9500 and could choose to use 9.2.1 as well but prefer 9.1.

I've been running 9.2.1 on my 8500 and it's been just a little nicer for me. I think
the OpenGL is a newer version and it runs the video just a little smoother. Starts up
quite a bit faster too. Really stable also, I leave the thing on for months sometimes.

If you're interested in experiments, I believe there is a version of Linux that runs
fairly well on the 950. Neither OpenBSD or NetBSD will run on it (rats!) but Apple's
A/UX will (3.1.1) and it's fairly interesting. It runs System 7.0.1 and Unix, side by
side. Plenty of downloads still out there.

Enjoy,
Scott
