There is a link from lowendmac.com - just look under "OS Downloads" on the
right side of the header.

I would like to put it in and be able to format these disks and start
all
over again.
Our MUG has done a similar thing with a number of Performa 580 and 580
CD models.

We installed OS 7.5.5 because, as you say, that was the last OS that
was in the pulbic domain. Apple made the 7.5.5 package available as a
CD-ROM installer as well as a package of something like 14 HD
diskettes. This was a number of years ago and I don't know if it is
still available from Apple or not. I am in Canada and would have bought
mine through Apple Canada back before there was such a thing as the
Online Apple Store.

In any event, the package really boils down to a 7.5.3 Installer and a
7.5.5 updater, as I recall. There is a 7.5.3 Disk Tools diskette which
could be used to boot the Mac and wipe an internal hard drive clean.

I would think all this would be available somewhere in the depths of
the Apple web site, depending upon your patience to go looking for it
or someone else supplying a URL.

You can download the MacOS 7.5 set from Apple, then use it to create
floppies, then use the Tools floppy to boot with, which will allow you to
setup the internal hard disk.

If you can't get this to work (I haven't tried it from the free MacOS 7.5
stuff), I can send you a disk image of that floppy (since its now free,
there should be no reason I can't legally do that?).

[q] Mac LC580

2004-03-23 Thread Tom M Abel
Here is your Mac deprived and humble doctor again. I have 16 Mac LC580's
some of which the hard drives are blank or don't register at all. Some,
from various schools, has administrator passwords which stop me dead in
my tracks. I give these away to disabled and homebound people and have
given away over 25 computers here in my hometown.

Is there a startup disk for a Mac like there was for Windows 9X and ME?
I would like to put it in and be able to format these disks and start all
over again. Since they won't take OS 7.6, I plan on downloading OS 7.5
since it is public domain. Should I see if there is a 7.5 setup or, if I
put it on CD, if that would open things up to format and load?

Thanks. I have orders for six of these and so far, I only have two ready
to go.
