[q] Once-removed (exotic) question re. EDO SIMMS in older Macs

2004-03-06 Thread Greg Shafritz
Here's a good one to ponder:

I've been wondering for a long time about whether one can successfully use
EDO SIMMs (Extended Data Out) in a 1st generation PPC Mac.
I know that EDO SIMMs will function in a Q950 or 840av,
and also in a 6100, 7100 or 8100,
but their EDO capability is not utilized by the memory controller,
so the benefits of EDO are not achieved.

HOWEVER: (and this is a BIG point)

I've discovered that there IS a 1st-generation PowerMac that has
an EDO-capable memory controller
It's the WGS 9150 (Apple Workgroup Server 9150).

This brings up two obvious questions.

1. Can EDO SIMMs can be used in a WGS 9150, with their
 EDO capabilities FULLY FUNCTIONAL?

2. The WGS 9150 has 8 MB of system RAM soldered to the motherboard.
These RAM chips look like they are NON-EDO.
So even though the 9150's memory controller is EDO-capable,
won't the 8 MB of soldered mainboard RAM make the EDO feature
 useless? (i.e. it's kind of like using a SCSI-1 hard drive on a SCSI-2
bus... every device on the SCSI-2 bus will be forced to run at SCSI-1
speeds because the SCSI-1 device creates a bottleneck).

Lastly, if the EDO feature is non-functional because of the non-EDO RAM on
the mainboard, can I REPLACE the mainboard RAM with EDO chips and thus make
the 9150's EDO feature fully functional???

This is the kind of thing that should get a nice debate going on the list -
let's have some fun tackling this one during the weekend.

I've got my soldering iron ready!

Jeff Walther, are you out there?
Any other takers?

TIA!

[q] Monitor repair service (or technician) needed in NYC area

2004-02-27 Thread Greg Shafritz
Hi everyone,

Can anybody recommend a service facility that repairs
or refurbishes CRT monitors in the New York City area?

Anywhere within a 2-hour drive of New York City is fine...

I have a dead Radius Intellicolor 20e that I purchased as a "NOS"
(new old stock) item on eBay. Classic story: it worked for 2 weeks,
then went dead right before my eyes. No warranty from the seller,
just a "No DOA" guarantee, so replacement by the seller isn't possible.

Since I spent more than I should have to get this unit, I'd like to
try to fix it reasonably so that I can at least say that I got more than
just 2 weeks use out of it.

I believe this monitor is virtually identical to the Dell D1626, so that
might make it easier to find someone who'll fix it.

Bottom line:
If it can be repaired for $125 or less, then it's worth it for me to keep
it.

I'm looking for names / phone numbers of repair shops, service facilities
etc. that you know or have dealt with directly.
Or, better yet, does anyone with experience in monitor repair want to
take a crack at this unit?

I'm open to suggestions of all kinds; thank you very much in advance
as always!

Srtange lines on screen w/Supermac Thunder II GX - is the VRAM bad?

2003-11-11 Thread Greg Shafritz
Hello again everyone!

My Thunder II GX 1600 video card has developed a problem:
On the screen, I'm getting white vertical lines about a quarter-inch apart
that run across the entire screen.
The white lines are perfectly parallel and evenly spaced.
They resemble dotted white lines (not solid) and they're always there.

At the "millions of colors" setting, there is also a strange
lavender/pinkish tint to the picture which flickers a little bit.
This pinkish/purple tint disappears when I change the setting to "256
colors"... so the image colors are then normal... BUT the white lines are
still there!

The only setting that makes the lines disappear is "Black & White".
When I set the video card to Black & White, the display looks normal.

Can one of our resident experts please help me figure this out?

Here's what I'm thinking could be the problem:

1. A bad VRAM chip on the video card
2. A defect in the special adapter cable that this card uses
(13w3 to DB-15 adapter)

I have ruled out any issues with the monitor (i.e. I've tested the card with
several different monitors, but the lines & pinkish tint are always there).
I have also tried the card in different NuBus slots, and in three different
Macs (Quadra 840av, IIci and Workgroup Server 9150).
Nothing helped.

Please let me know what you think I could do.
I am experienced with test equipment and a soldering iron, so I could
replace a defective VRAM chip if only I could figure out how to tell which
chip is bad!

If it's an issue related to the video cable (13w3 to DB-15) then I would
just replace the cable and be done with it!

I eagerly await your replies - TIA!

Dead NuBus cards - how to revive???

2003-10-15 Thread Greg Shafritz
Hi All!

Here's a good one for those of you with a DIY technical background:

What are the most common issues that could make a NuBus card "DOA"? I
recently received an FWB SCSI Jackhammer that does not show up in Apple
System Profiler, and Tattle Tech also cannot detect the presence of the card
when installed.
Essentialy, this therefore is a "dead" card.

What are the first things I should look for in trying to repair this card?
I assume that I should first check to be sure that it is receiving power
from the motherboard - true?
Do these cards sometimes have onboard power supplies that fail?
What about blown microfuses (what would a fuse look like that wasn't a
conventional fuse) - is there such a thing as an SMD fuse?

I'm ready to dive in really deep, and I've got all my test equipment out...
who's able to help point me in the right direction as to how to proceed?

TIA (very much!)

Best wishes,
Greg Shafritz

MicroNet NuPort II SCSI card - anybody know how this works?

2003-10-07 Thread Greg Shafritz
Hi everyone!

I'm back on the list after about two years of being off.
Sure is great to be back!

I've got an old (circa 1991) MicroNet NuPort II SCSI card that I'm trying to
test the capabilities of.
Trouble is, I can't find ANY documentation or useful info about it on the
web. I have no documentation or software, just the card.

It has 2 SCSI connectors:

One miniature 50-pin SCSI-2 connector (for external drives)
One standard internal 50-pin SCSI connector (don't know if it's SCSI-1 or
SCSI-2)

Do I need a control panel to utilize or configure the features/functions of
this SCSI adapter?
If so, does anyone out there have have a copy?
MicroNet is of no help whatsoever, unfortunately.

As for documentation, has anyone got a manual they could scan or photocopy?

Thanks very much in advance.
I look forward to your help!

All the best,
Greg Shafritz
