System requirements

2002-04-08 Thread JEZMO

What is the reasoning behind uping the system requirements for programs if
they run on a lower version.netscape 4, I believe requires 7.5 or 7.6 as
stated by netscape so if it runs on a lower OS why would they not lower the
system requirements? Are they running as smooth as the stated requirements?

I still challenge anyone on this list to name an example of a productivity
application that requires 8.1 that does not also require a PPC. Apple
System Profiler doesn't count, especially when you can get the same
information in much more detail from TattleTech or TechTool.

Does Resource Tweezer (68k) count requires system 7.5 only did'nt even have
to go all the way to 8.1. Now lets not change the rules yes there might be
something out there that is similar but you said find an app that won't run
on 7.1.

Well another canadian,

I too have gotten my mother hooked up with her 575 using 7.5. but not using
sympatico/sprint/IGS/sprint/ do I need to go on. I went with a local company
for her to which I've never heard of before but they were willing to set it
up for me. Giving me the software required on disc's since the apple
internet connection cd I have needed 7.5.3 to work!!!She wanted sympatico
she has her phone there cell phone there to package them all together with a
strong company would of been ideal for her.

Well I guess you really missed the original question what is the highest OS
to run on a 475. Answer 8.1 fast maybe not, does it work yes, Apple seems to
think it does along with a million others.Would 7.1 be faster yes but that
wasn't the question, sometimes it helps to listen or read the question.

Let's remember the intial post, the gentelman had a 475 so a 68040 with full
36megs ram well within handling 8.1 maybe not as fast but yet compact and
user friendly for him.I didn't even get into hfs+ last night, and the whole
issue of an isp not setting up an account on anything that has a lower OS
than 8.1 is an issue. Some people just like to buy there computer and
install the OS and away you go.

Re: MacOS for Performa 475

2002-04-07 Thread JEZMO

Well these are articles from the LEM wes site so are you saying their opions
don't count?

Seriously consider upgrading to Mac OS 8.1 once you have 20 MB or more
memory (the 475 has 4 MB on the motherboard, so a 16 MB upgrade gives you 20
MB total). Mac OS 8.1 includes updated Open Transport drivers for your modem
and Internet access, far better support for the 68040 processor, and lots of
neat new features you'll quickly become accustomed to. I've seen the install
CD for as little as US$29.

So my vote is Mac OS 7.5.5 on pre-68040 models, 8.1 on 68040 and PowerPC
machines, and either 8.1 or 8.5.1 on Power Macs and Maclones.

68040-based Macs should use Mac OS 7.6.1 (unless 7.6 is unavailable, in
which case they should run 7.5.5).

No what sucks is your inability to converse with others, no wonder so many
people are using PC's they probably had you as a teacher.Maybe a break away
from the computer and a class in manners would do you well. Your like the
doctor with bad bedside manners, why do you even answer to this list if your
so cranky, you just like playing god you don't care about really what people
want.

Glad to see everone is so open minded, did I say she wanted to play the
lastest games I think not.But that last blurp did'nt help your case, if I'm
able to update the os without buying a new computer then why wouldn't I?As
for my opion I never said people had to like mine this is the point I was
trying to make options or opions are just that take them or leave them but
everone has them, and it doesn't hurt to see the other side of things now
and then!!Good for you that your happy with 7.1 but maybe that won't be what
Mike and Robin need, it doesn't hurt to ask and it doesn't cost anything. I
didn't know knowledge of people was so scary to some.We use computers but we
are people remember.

People like having options, my mother's 575 that I set up I put 7.5 then
updated it to 7.5.3 for her and I get phone calls all the time(she likes to
play games) whatever games she goes to download need that higher OS, now I'm

I'm finding hard to believe that apple went any further than OS 7.1 if it
was such a stand alone OS. Come on things change and we change with them.
You don't happen to drive a car that has the abilitiy to go faster than the
speed limit do you? If so then your theory doesn't stick!!

Well lets find a decent browser out there that will run on 7.1?
I-cab needs 7.5
Netscape 4.7.9 needs 7.6.1-you could only run Netscape 3(wow)
Explorer you can only run up to version 3 with 7.1, now I don't know about
you I have used those browsers and they are not what I call great. With
having a higher OS that would enable them to have get broswers past 3, maybe
they just want to surf the web, but I guess you never asked asked them that
question.I'll wait for your response to this to carry on.

Re: MacOS for Performa 475

2002-04-06 Thread JEZMO

Lately I see this question pop up, and yes a lower version of OS might be
faster but you have to remember what software is available for 7.1, not a
lot. Not to say that 8.1 which can run on a 475 will be as fast as 7.1 or
7.5.3 or whatever but take in mind what you will be using it for and check
to see what app's you are not going to be able to use using such a lower
version of OS.
