Arthur,

HexEdit will do the job.

I checked it, and there is a "compare files" command in the menu.

This is from the readme file:

HexEdit is a file editor allowing you to view and edit the data contained
withn any file. The original (through v1.07) is from Jim Bumgardner, Dave
Polaschek released a version 1.1 and Nick Shanks released a version 1.3, and
many of his changes are now part of the official HexEdit release. You can
reach Nick at <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> or on the web at

versions from v1.1 through the current release, and you can get more
information at my site . The official

Re: in Short - "H-E-L-P"

2003-06-03 Thread Peter Heinemann
Hi Adam,
since I do not have the specs for the drive handy and therefore have to
employ my brain :), is that drive you want to use an "LVD" (Low Voltage
Differential) aka "Ultra2 SCSI" drive?

I know, that SCA drives (80pin) can used in a Quad or a PM 6100 with the
proper adapter that you have (have also done so). That should not be the
problem.

But, I made the following experience with an IBM 9.1 DDRS LVD/SD drive I
bought on eBay:

That drive had a jumper switch that allowed to switch between LVD and SE
(Single Ended Ultra SCSI) mode.

I switched to SE mode (I tried all settings), but the drive still refused to
show up in tools like SCSI Probe and it whenever I tried to scan the bus,
the computer freezed. I tried over and over and also Sync Negotiation, all
SCSI IDs, term on/off, no success.

I checked the drive on a friends Mac (he buys new Macs twice a year :), and
the drive turned out to be 100% functional.

We came to the end, that this drive was too modern for the SCSI hardware in
my PM6100.

I ended up in buying an IBM DDRS 9.1 GB "SE" drive, works fine.

The Cheetah is a high performance 10k rpm drive which produces A LOT OF heat
and screams for very good cooling which cannot be provided in the low
profile housing of the C610 style Macs without adding extra fans.

Cannot tell more right now...

Re: Spyware software for Macs? >

Hm, I have next to null knowledge about Spyware and keystroke loggers on the
Mac, can those 2 or 3 existing keystroke loggers be download without being
noticed by the user or hide in other software?

See, I want to start doing home-banking in the next days and I want to make
sure that I am safe from pieces of data that hide on my harddisk and evade
the 128bit password encryption by logging the passwords before they are
encrypted.

Is Spyware generally not a problem on Macs? Are there good apps to find and
erase the few Spyware apps on the Mac?

Spyware software for Macs?

2003-03-12 Thread Peter Heinemann
Most likely this was asked before, but I got mad about it right two days
ago, so I hope you like my question here :)

Alerted by the terribly increasing scam with fake e-mails on eBay, I want to
protect my machines against Spyware and keystroke loggers, which seem to be
also a problem on Macs.

I found "MacScan", which runs on 68k and PPC.
http://macscan.securemac.com/

Anyone tried it? Is it worth the installation? Are there better apps then
this one?
I don´t know anything about spyware, but I think it is hard to get a proof
that a spyware killer successfully removed anything or that something
resided on the harddisk at all or that the anti-spyware program has not
installed spyware itself :P

So I would like to ask for advise...

Re: One monitor on 2 Macs using y-cable, can video chip take damage?

2003-03-10 Thread Peter Heinemann
Yes, seems also a bit risky to me. I used identical wire for the signal
lines, as short as possible. I think, they should have the same imperdance
(taken from the same cable).

I think, I will stick to the port savers and do what these ladies at the
telephony compaines did some decades ago: Plug in, Plug out.

Maybe, once I find an electronic switch at a nice price, I will try it
again.

One monitor on 2 Macs using y-cable, can video chip take damage?

2003-03-09 Thread Peter Heinemann
Hm, I am working on a monitor connectivity problem and need some advise.

I want to connect one monitor to several Macs (040 and PPC). I want to use
only *one* computer at the same time (not switch from one machine to the
other), but not plug/unplug the cables each time, because this most likely
would stress the ports.

Lets say: I want to use the Quadra on Monday and the PPC on Tuesday with the
same screen and not plug/unplug anything.

I have tried and modified some of these monitor switch boxes and changed the
input/output ports from DSub-15 to DB-15 (using the correct pin-outs), but
the quality of the Monitor image decreased significantly, the switch box
adds ghosting to the image, which results in a noticeable loss of sharpness.

I found this page on the net and applied all the hints giving in that
document (reducing the cable length, using better cable material, fixing the
grounding), but the ghosting remained.

http://www.starnet.com.au/davem/overclock/switch.html

I think, it has to do with these big 15-line switches and not with the
wiring anymore, since I totally renewed it (I also added high quality
coax-type cables for the RGB signal lines).

So, I want to give up the idea to use these poor switch boxes (and no, I
don´t want to invest any more money in those expensive signal-amplified
switches).

First, I thought about adding port-savers or gender-changers to the ports,
to save them from wear, but then I had another idea:

Would it be possible to use a simple self-made y-cable (having the correct
genders) to connect 2 Macs to one Monitor and run only one Mac at a time
without bringing damage to the graphics chip of the non-powered machine?

I mean: Normally, the video signal is sent from the video chip in the
computer to the monitor, but with an y-cable without a switch, the signal
would also go from the powered machine through the y-cable into the
un-powered machine. Would that ruin anything? Since there´s would not be a
massive switch and only very short cables, I would be most likely save from
visible quality loss.

Any idea?
Thanks in advance.

Spam (?) with virus (?) attachment from pci-powermacs list?

Never subscribed to pci-powermacs list, so the mail with the 100kb

sends out spam with viruses just to knock out Mac users.

Maybe I am wrong, but if you don´t have subsribed to pci-powermacs list and
get mail with attachments, better be carefully and better don not open it...

Re: Newbie questions for LC 575

2003-01-25 Thread Peter Heinemann
See, I know that when Apple wrote the manuals for the last 68k Mac in 1994,
there were no bigger simms available than 32MB, but it is like I wrote, some
simms over 32MB may work, but definitely *not all*, like I wrote in my post:

"Maybe some memory will work, but better check it first since 128MB simms
are somewhat expensive"

I checked it once again with a Q840av, I tried 64MB Simms (Kingston) and
128MB simms (TYP:SEC/KM44C16100BK-6). These are 100% OK, work like a charm
in my Powermacs, but plugged into a Q610, Centris660av or a Q840, they are
not recognised in their full size, I get sizes not over 32MB. Of course I
tried all possible slot combinations.

Some machine´s ram controller cannot handle bigger sized memory and some
can.

So - the best idea would be to make sure that the memory is supported in
that specific machine - just to be saved from disapointment.

I could not read what is written in the macfaq (down?), but I found this
link:

Re: Newbie questions for LC 575

2003-01-24 Thread Peter Heinemann
Hi,
well, I use two 128MB PS/2 Simms in my PM 6100 (making a total of 264BM in
that machine) and they work fine , but as far as I know, 68k Macs do not
support Memory over 32MB.

I checked it with a 64MB Simm in a Quadra 610 and a Centris 66Oav and that
memory is recognized only as a 32BM simm.

Maybe some memory will work, but better check it first since 128MB simms are
somewhat expensive :)

PDS Right angle adapter Centris660av

2002-11-24 Thread Peter Heinemann
Hello.
I do have a Centris 660av - a very cool machine: DSP, S-VHS. And there is
this 48MHz Motorola 68040 PDS accelerator card that I would gladly use to
add some speed increase to this machine. I did so in my Quadra 610 and it
feels really nice. But I cannot not find the proper right angle adapter for
the Centris 660av, its PDS is totally different from the slot in the Quadra
610 and the PM6100 <---since this has a 601PDS.

So - if anyone has such an adapter and cannot make any use of it - wanna
give it to me :::smiles::: ?
I would also be extremely happy to get only the card without the metal angle
thingy.

I noticed, that the Centris 660av graphics performance under OS 8.0 is
noticeable better than what I get from my Quadra 610 - even when the 48mHz
accelerator board is active in the Quadra and the Centris runs at its 25mHz.
I am pretty sure this is due to the DSP in the Centris ^_^ So - I want to
put the accelerator in the Centris to make it my best 68040 Apple! Anyone
has?

HPPA 9000 workstation memory in Quadras?

2002-11-09 Thread Peter Heinemann
Dunno if I sent this twice, the first time I mailed it, listserver sent me a
subscribe confirmation in return, heh.

Hi,
just a few days ago, I bought 3 Hewlett Packard Risc Workstations series
9000, HPPA 712/60, all 3 machines equipped with 128mb Ram each (4x32mb, 72
pin). Since I payed only 70 Euro for the whole pile of machines I would say
I got them pretty cheap (12x32mb). These HPs seem go pretty cheap on eBay,
since they were prodiced in very high numbers.

http://www.tkt.cs.tut.fi/computers/info.html
(the second pic)

I would like to know if this Ram can be expected to work in our 68k Centris
and Quadras, the newer ones which have the 72pin Ram slots.

CATEGORY: Memory (Dooh! :)
MANUFACTURER: HP
MODEL: 8Mx36FPM 32MB SIMM (A2575-60001)
FEATURES:  32MB with Parity / Fast Page Mode / 72 pin SIMM 60 ns

This sounds pretty alright. I am not quite sure since this is workstation
memory and those modules are sometimes somewhat special... ? Playing "Trial
and Error" seems a bit risky to me.

Well, if it does not work and the Ram will not fit into my Quadras then it´s
ok though, since I am planning to install Nextstep on one of them, the Risc
port of Nextstep that came out for the Sun Sparc and HPPA. My good NeXT
Turbo Colorstation with its 33 Mhz Motorola 68040 might be fast, but the HP
with its 60 Mhz Risc cpu is somewhat faster... :)

So, is there any HP guru here who knows if the HP 9000 memory can run in
Quadras?

Thankies
-Peter

Is this a fixed frequency monitor or not?

2002-09-07 Thread Peter Heinemann

I think, this is only slightly off-topic, since it is about a 68040 machine
and monitors are generally important for Quadras, too.

I want to use a specific monitor on my NeXT Colour Station (68040).
A friend of mine wants to give me a Ikegami 20 inch Trinitron monitor for
free, but the heavy piece has to be shipped over a few hundred kilometers,
so I want to clear this first.

The NeXT monitor specs are:

Horizontal Scan Rate: 61 KHz
Vertical Scan Rate: 68 Hz
Sync-on-green

So, the monitor, if not an original NeXT monitor, has to be a multiscan
monitor to match the requirements of the NeXT.

The monitor I am interested in is the Ikegami CT20HB Rev. G
I have the needed 13W3 to BNC adapter.

Well, you maybe know these self declared "monitor authorities" like
www.monitorworld.com or www.si87.com. I looked on their pages for the
technical specifications of the Ikegami display, but I found most confusing
information:

http://www.monitorworld.com/Monitors/ikegami/ct20hbrevg.html

the description of the ikegami display reads there:
H Freq/ V Freq: 59.52; 47-65 Khz / 73.68; 54-80 Hz
The site says it is fixed frequency!!! But then again they write that the
monitor scans horizontally from 47-65 Khz and vertically from 54-80Hz...

I found more irritating data about "fixed frequency" monitors on those
sites:

For example, look at this:
http://www.si87.com/MonitorSolutions/sun/gdm20d10.html

It is about the Sun 20D10 which specs read:
H Freq/ V Freq: 60-82 Khz / 50-150hz
But this site states that it is a fixed frequency monitor. False?

Same here:
http://www.si87.com/MonitorSolutions/sgi/gdm20d11.html#MACcable

Can this serve as an explanation:
Maybe they also consider a monitor to be of the fixed frequency type if it
scans only through the upper area of frequencies. You know, on a PC, the
monitor has to be able to handle also very low horizontal frequencies like
around 34khz - in the Bios screen or in Dos.
So - maybe - a monitor is considered to be of the "fixed frequency" type
generally, if it is not PC compatible, even if it is a multi-scan monitor in
the small range of higher frequencies.

To end with a clear formulated question:
Is the Ikegami, which has
H Freq/ V Freq: 59.52; 47-65 Khz / 73.68; 54-80 Hz
a fixed frequency monitor or a "small range multiscan" display that would
work on the NeXT?

Re: Why Gates on a Mac?

2002-09-05 Thread Peter Heinemann

Neat, but why are you telling us this?

See, the presence of the "other" systems is a fact - period.

Getting more knowledge can never be considered bad and a sane IT person has
to be able to work with *every* operating system out there and to be able to
write in at least one programming language.

So, installing PC emulations to fiddle around with them and to use clever
written PC applications cannot be bad. Not all programmers on the PC side
are morons and not all PC apps are written by Microsoft.

I use some very well made Dos applications under Virtual PC and there is
nothing I should feel guilty or ashamed about.

Don´t get me wrong, I am with Apple Computers since 1982 - and I am still
loyal, despite Apple always used to tread their customers like shit, but
this is OK (Oh heaven, what am I writing here?), all companies do it and
Apple has blessed the digital world with lots of innovations, so I forgive
them.

You have to learn that many PC users love their machines like you love our
Apple computers. They worked for it, maybe they cannot buy the newest G4.
And what really makes me sick is when Mac users go to a public message
board, start to flame and insult PC users (no, it is not you I am talking
about here) and then wonder and cry why they get flamed to oblivion.
I know such persons - and I always have a apologize for them to my friends.

And I really hate this Macintosh user group attitude: We are blessed, better
than the other, the others are morons, mongs, the brainless scum.

Well, I am sane - I do not need this way of thinking.

No offence - but what we need is more knowledge and education, not dogmas.

Re: Mac monitor to a PC

2002-08-29 Thread Peter Heinemann

The Apple number of the adapter you need is:

(1P) P/N: 922-0736
CBL ASSY, MAC/PC ADPTR, DSPL

Good that I always keep the bags of the stuff I buy :)

But be warned, that is a costly piece, I paid $35 for it (a rip-off, imho)

Plus, your monitor has to be a multi-scan monitor, because it has to match
the horizontal frequency of the screens in Dos, which are very low, so
forget about your 14" Apple trinitron, no fixed frequency monitor will work
properly on a PC as long as you don´t invest loads of money in a fixed
frequency graphics board.

I use my "Apple Multiple Scan 17" also on an evil PC, because what I can
squeeze out of Virtual PC even on my new G4 is just a poor joke (flame on).

My older "Apple 16" Colour Display" did not work, since its a fixed
frequency monitor. Of course, you could drag your old 14" monitor to the
technician and ask him to convert it, but that would not be worth the
effort.

If you want good monitors with a flexible design = all sync types
(composite, sperate, and sync-on-green-green), a broad range of frequency,
both DB and BNC connectors, go shop for monitors of the brand "Eizo". Hint,
hint :)

Miro Prisma 16GX Nubus video board - anyone knows?

2002-08-17 Thread Peter Heinemann

Hello,
recently, I got a "Miro Prisma 16 GX" Nubus video card in my hand, a pretty
costly piece back in 1994 when it was manufactured. I put it in several
nubus macs (Q800, Q840, PM8100), but the screen remains black and so I guess
that it is waiting for a driver or a secret keystroke on startup. I did a
search on the net without success and also Miro (a German firm near
Braunschweig) does not offer any information.

Does anyone have the drivers or knows where to get them?

The label on the surface of the card reads:

PRISMA GX16
Vers. 2.1
Jan.13.1994

Well, thanks in advance for any hint.

Re: 840AV FLOPPY WON'T WORK

2002-08-13 Thread Peter Heinemann

Well, I am not sure if this was already advised by someone here, but: Have
you also tried to swap the floppy drive cable? It is most unlikely that this
cable becomes bad (how?), but try this.

Another question: Have the 840av been accelerated with a faster quarz? I
know that the 840av has no PDS, but I have (this is just an example) a Q610
that I once accelerated with a 48mHz 68040 PDS card (made by the German firm
"Formac") and: The floppy drives refuses to work when the accelerator card
is on.

About swapping the mobos to get a working floppy controller: The AV
capabilities make the Q840av a "Cult" machine. So.

NeXT monitor problem solved - works :)

2002-07-29 Thread Peter Heinemann

Ok, I connected my NeXT to the Apple 17" MultipleScan M2494 (using the 13w3
to DB15 adapter), took a deep breath and hit the power switch on the
keyboard.

Works. The NeXT slab enlightend the screen and the machine started (system
check, disk check (nicely animated by a "working harddive" symbol), login
screen).

What makes me wonder is that it works dispite the Apple monitor is not
documented to support the NeXT typical "sync on green" (this monitor speaks
"separate sync" and "composite sync"). Well, maybe I should not speak it
loud and enjoy as long as the monitor does not notice it.

Then, I tried it with another monitor: The Eizo FlexScan F340i-W, 15"
screen, which understands sync on green, but does not support the needed
resolution of 1120x832 (the Eizo is able to handle 1024 x 768)
The Eizo works also pretty sweet.

Sometimes things are easier than it seems:)

NeXT task will be to sail around the login-password cliff (machine was
formerly owned by "MIT"), but I found a useful hint here:

Re: NeXT ColorStation and Apple Multisync 17". Possible?

2002-07-29 Thread Peter Heinemann

Hehe, I have such an adapter, I was just too shy to try ^_^

These NeXT computers are pretty hard to get and I am very happy to own one
now.
When I think that I got another Centris 660av for just 5 Euro on
Ebay...Apple once positioned these AV macs to match the capabilities of the
NeXT machines, if I am right.

BTW, on my NeXT is a sticker reading "MASS. INST. OF TECH.", so I think this
piece is truely pedigree :)

Thank you for the support, James and Rob, and when it comes to a NeXT list,
I will sign there, too.

Re: NeXT ColorStation and Apple Multisync 17". Possible?

2002-07-27 Thread Peter Heinemann

Hello James,
and thank you very much for your kind and fast reply.

> I have a NeXT N4005 21" color monitor by Hitachi
> that was being used on a Q800 with a D15 to 3 BNC cable.

Ok, so far we know that it is possible to connect a Monitor, which has BNC to a Mac
that has only DB-15. But does
that mean that we can also connect a Monitor that has only DB-15 to a NeXT that has
only 13w3 after soldering a
DB-15 to 13w3 adapter?

Is a DB-15 to 13w3 possible? I know that the Apple 21" Display and the 15" portrait
monitor were both connected
via 13w3. I have seen adapters for Sun monitors, made for the purpose to connect these
workstation monitors to
ordinary PCs, but could some connect a Multiscan PC monitor to the Sun (or SGI or
NeXT) workstation? *That*
would match the situation I am in.

What I am interested in is (where is my Volt-meter? Grrr) if the NeXT ColorStation´s
power supply also sends the
relatively high voltage of 12V 2 Ampere through the video cable, like seen on the mono
stations.

NeXT ColorStation and Apple Multisync 17". Possible?

2002-07-26 Thread Peter Heinemann

Hello all (and greetings from Germany ^_^)

I do have a question about a computer equipped with a 040 processor, but
this machine is not a Mac - it is a NeXT TurboColor Station. I am uncertain
if asking NeXT related questions is allowed here - if not, please disregard
it and sorry ^_^

I got the NeXT through ebay and it came with the Y-cable and soundbox, but
without monitor. To save space in my Apple computer stuffed home, would like
to connect my Apple Multisync 17³ Monitor to the 13w3 connector of the NeXT.

The Apple monitor can deliver the scan rates that are needed on the NeXT and
the proper sync signal, so this is not my question.

Usually, third party color monitors are connected to the Color NeXT using 3
(not 5) BNC connectors, a special cable adapter was available from NeXT for
this purpose. But the Apple monitor does not have BNC, so my question is it
someone knows if it is possible to connect the monitor by using the
following cable:

13w3D-Sub 15 (plus adapter D-Sub 15/DB15)

Speaking theoretically: Can a computer that runs fine with BNC type monitors
also connect to non-BNC monitors if the needed adapter is supplied?

I have several drawings showing the exact connector schematics, so I could
modify/solder a cable on my own, but I am afraid I could ruin the NeXT or
the monitor on switch-up.

I learned, that on the monochrome NeXT stations, the monitor was powered
through the video cable (12V at 2 Ampere!), but what I have is a color
station and nobody would force me to connect the specific 12V lines to the
Apple monitor ^_^

Any suggestions/hints are most welcome (also off-list) and I thank you in
advance ^_^

-Peter

It has 64 pins.

Hm, thank you for your efforts, pickle ^_^. I will try
to get a 660av motherboard from ebay. I am guessing it
would cause more efforts to acquire the needed parts
and to solder them, but maybe will I do this later.
Does your 660av have a simm or something like that in
the 64pin slot? I would like to know if it is a needed
part, maybe my problems are caused by the fact that it
is missing, but then again, maybe there were different
versions/revisions of the 660 board?

Re: Do 64MB simms work in a Centris 610?

2002-04-14 Thread Peter Heinemann

Well, I checked it with two 64MB Simms (Edo). I put
them into my Quadra 610 and they are recognized only
as 69.832k under OS7.1 and as 68MB under OS 8.0.
They work fine in A PM 6100 and give 136MB Ram.

I have to confess, that when I wrote that "68k Macs do
not support Simms bigger than 32MB", I repeated what I
once read somewhere. Maybe other 68k Macs may
recognize 64MB Simms, but the Q610 obviously not. At
least, not the Edo Simms I have tried (there was no
brand on the label on the chips, only "64MB Edo"). As
far as I know, Macs that accept 72pin PS/2, does not
make any difference between Fastpage and Edo... But
maybe the brand does matter?

Tony: If you want a definetely answer, I could make an
experiment with the Quadra 610 that still serves on my
desktop as a monitor support ^_^. It comes very close
to a Centris 610, I think.

I once upgraded my PM6100 and replaced the two 64MB
Simms with two 128MB simms (I already spoke about), so
I do have a Quadra 610 and two 64MB simms handy. Just
tell me if you want me to do this (the monitor is
heavy ^_^). If it really works despite my belife, why
not...?

No, 68k Macs do not support Simms bigger than 32MB.
When Apple printed the manuals for the Centris 610,
the 32 MB Simm was the biggest memory available and so
the manual speaks only about 32MB Simms for the
maximum allowed memory upgrade, but in fact, those
machines cannot handle bigger Simms due to technical
reasons.

I hope that I do not burn my mouth by speaking about a
Powermac 6100, since its offtopic and forbidden here,
but - anyway:

Personally, I made the experience, that a PowerMac
6100 (same cute housing), for which Apple also once
said it could be upgraded to max. 72 MB only, can
easily work with both 64 MB and 128MB Simms PS/2. Of
course, only matching Simms at once ^_^ So my PM 6100
has 264MB real ram (including the 8MB soldered to the
logicboard). I got the two matching 128MB modules at
Euro 145.00 (the price was for two simms = 256 MB). If
someone does not believe, I gladly send him a
screenshot of System Profiler by mail ^_^

My advise: Go shop for a PM6100 logicboard on ebay,
you should be able to grab one for $10.00 or so, but
you also need the PM 6100 housing«s rear panel, that
has openings for the special special HDI-45 video port
of these machines. Many sellers offer logicboard and
rear panel in a bundle. And ask the seller if the rom
simm is included, you could not do anything with the
board without that rom.

Centris 660av motherboard modification

2002-04-12 Thread Peter Heinemann

Hi all,
I got to get my hands on a Centris 660av, one more Mac
I got cheap from ebay (Euro 8.00) and one more guest
in my Mac asylum. It looks like new, no yellowing from
sunlight or cigarette smoke, no scratches at all, even
the cover surface does not show any wear from a
monitor or whatsoever. Plus, it came with all the
original packaging and paperwork. Nice ^_^

But the machine does not start up. Not even a beep,
neither the good startup sound not the bad tone (no,
there is no plug into the audio line out jack)... Dark
screen. Arrgh!

The power supply is OK, I put it into a Quadra 610 and
it performs well! (actually, this was a lie, I tried
it with a PowerMac 6100, but since this is Quadlist
and not Powermac list... ^_^

So I tried what I always try, zapping Pram, replacing
the battery, without success. Uh.

Then I looked on the motherboard and - well, what I
saw made my blood freezing into my veins - someone
dared to make a modification on the logicboard, he
soldered a part onto the board, maybe the work of an
evil overclocker!

I would like to repair the mac and to bring it back to
its original condition, but for this task I have to
know what kind electronic part belongs to this place.

The first part I am curious about is located directly
under the AT&T DSP and next to the CD-Rom bay. The
place is marked as either "C55" or "C56" (it is hard
to read).

>From this part, the second part to the left (I guess
it is the oscillator) "G6" also seems to be modified.
It reads

SG-615P C
 12.5000 M
 3040A

I made some pics and uploaded them to my yahoo
briefcase. I marked the parts with question marks.
Maybe someone can tell me which parts are located on
these positions originally?

Thank you in advance
