There is another list called "Swap List" that is just for that kind of
thing. Check it out at http://lowendmac.com/lists/swap.html.

I've had good results from it, both selling and buying.

The combination did it (more RAM and a-o-s-d).

[q] 575 and 8.1

2004-04-15 Thread Russ Gibson
Anybody have an idea why a 575 won't boot a MacOS 8.1 CD?

When I hold the C key down, it sees the disc, spins it for a few seconds,
then ejects it and boots from the internal hard disk.

The internal hard disk has 7.1P6 on it, and I want to upgrade to the last
version it can use, which is supposedly 8.1.

If I insert the CD, and launch the "Upgrade to MacOS 8.1" or "Install MacOS
8.1" items, they come up and say "This program cannot run on your computer.
See the documentation for more information". The docs, of course, say
nothing about a 575.

Any ideas? It has 12 MB of RAM, does 8.1 require more? I didn't see
anything in the docs that said that...

Thanks!

You are correct in that I was just trying to illustrate that they don't ID

You can download the MacOS 7.5 set from Apple, then use it to create
floppies, then use the Tools floppy to boot with, which will allow you to
setup the internal hard disk.

If you can't get this to work (I haven't tried it from the free MacOS 7.5
stuff), I can send you a disk image of that floppy (since its now free,
there should be no reason I can't legally do that?).

Re: [q] Quadra 640 DOS

2004-03-14 Thread Russ Gibson
Yes, but...

I'm saying this from a purely theoretical standpoint: If you are using any
version of Window's on it, you can use the included Sound Recorder
application to do it. If you are running in DOS mode, you'll need to get a
copy of the SoundBlaster 16 utilities, or a shareware/freeware DOS program
to do it.

Now, whether its easy to do is another thing entirely. I'm not familiar
with the setup, so I don't know what's going to be involved in getting this
to work. If there are instructions somewhere for installing Windows, even
3.x if that's all it'll support, I'd think that'd be the easiest way.

Somebody familiar with DOS based sound sampling may have another opinion.
Its been way to many years since I've done it to remember.

I have original SoundBlaster 16 floppies or CD somewhere I can look for if
you can't get anything else to work (it has the DOS utilities I refer to
above).

I'd place my bet on it being the same as a standard 68LC040, but Motorola
probably either did a large run of these types and had to unload them (i.e.
misread the market), or they forced Apple to switch (because it cost less to
manufacture?), but Apple had the boards made with the original sockets and
had to adapt.

I've seen this on other systems before: My old Apple IIgs had a TransWarpGS
in it that contained a PLCC 65816, even though the IIgs motherboard
contained a DIP 65816.

Somebody over on the PCI list mentioned something about software you can get
from Apple that resets the internal monitor settings. You may want to do a
quick search on the PCI list.

I've never done it myself, so I know nothing more than that somebody said
its possible, and somebody else reported that it fixed their problem, which
yours sounds similar too.

How's that for non-committal help? :-)

I got up this morning and was going to try a smaller partition, reverting
back to 7.6, etc., but, alas, its all a moot point now as I am getting a sad
Mac. I let the thing sit on a ? Mac for about 3 hours (I was busy...), and
then it just all of the sudden changed to a sad Mac. Now it does it just
after initializing the video - it's the first Mac icon I see.

In light of the fact that I've been able to purchase a 7600 MB, a complete
working 7200/120, and a 8600 system for less than $200, I think I'm just
going to part this thing out (if there is anything of any value in it)(I
paid about $2,000 for the 636CD originally!).

Thanks for everybody's help!

[q]Performa 636 & MacOS 8.1

2004-02-13 Thread Russ Gibson
Hi all.

I have a Performa 636 who's hard disk failed (finally). It had OS 7.5.3 on
it. I replaced it with the smallest IDE drive I had - a 13 GB Quantum
Fireball, but OS 7.5.x wouldn't initialize the drive successfully.

I just received a copy of MacOS 8.1, and I booted the CD and initialized the
drive and installed 8.1 onto a single standard 13 GB partition (the notes on
the CD say that 68k based Mac's can't start from a HFS+ partition).

When I remove the CD and reboot, I get a ? Mac - it can't find anything to
boot from. Does anybody have any ideas what I am doing wrong, or can point
me in the direction of what to do?

Thank you!
