Re: LC 630 / CD Rom replacement.

2003-01-29 Thread Stuart Saunders
Thanks E McCann, the pickle, Mark for your help,
Following your advice I checked at a new computer recycler on the Gold
Coast. Surprised to find he had a new looking CD Rom, same vintage as
the 630, so I picked it up for 15 $ Aus. Will get back to office on
Monday and try it.

Thanks again,
Regards,
Stuart.

 Not really :)

You are better off, if you want a CD-ROM only, replacing it with
another Apple badged unit. This will ensure maximum compatibility and
also that you can boot from the CD drive. It also better ensures the
drive will fit the 630 (see below). Stripped Apple SCSI units are
pretty easy to find on LEM Swap and places like that.

Will the 630 recognise a CD RW?

 Yep, quite nicely.

Yes, using Toast 4.1.2 or earlier. It's not really worth going much
 faster than 4x CD-R though as the 68k probably can't manage a CD-R much
faster. My 7300/200 struggled to write to a FireWire CD-RW at more than
12x, but that might well have been the FW card that sucked :).

 Any precautions?

They can be a bit tricky to get out, but they're not too bad.

You have to be *very* careful where the rear connectors are on the CD
drive for the 630. The CD drive attaches to the computer via a series
of edge connectors. These plug into the power, SCSI and Audio-out ports
of the CD-ROM drive. If they are more than a few mm either side of
where they should be it will not fit the machine without you modify the
 carrier inside the machine.

I don't have brands or anything, but apparently the 640 (same thing, but
with the DOS card integrated) I have had Toast on it when I got it - so
apparently an external CD-RW was hooked up.

Don't know how well it worked, I didn't have the CD-RW.

Just boot the 630 from the OS 8 disc *if you can*; if not, you can reformat the
drive on the iMac before putting it in the 630. If that isn't an option, you
could also just put the drive in the 630 and use one of the formatters in the
FAQ to wipe out the drive once it's in there.

LC 630 / CD Rom replacement.

2003-01-26 Thread Stuart Saunders
I have an LC 630 which has given me great service and now I use as a
Fax server. However, the CD Rom has just bought the farm.

What CD Roms can I use in the 630? Any particular specs apart from
scsi?

Will the 630 recognise a CD RW?

Any precautions?

Also would like to put the HD just yanked from my orig iMac into the
630. Can this be done? How do I format it; I have heard that system 8.1
can allow HFS+ formatting, but I only have sys 8 and 8.5 on discs. I
don't think 8.5 will work on a 630?

TIA,
Stuart.
