Re: Problem w/LC 630, OS 7.5.5, comm slot modem

2002-09-25 Thread Scott Holder

Yeah, I've copied the Chooser and a couple other things, Appleshare was
included with the Extensions folder I copied. Since I'm at work and
supposed to be working I'll have to wait until later to play with it
more. The fact I've was doing it on an emulator might have something to
do with it too, though I've used Appletalk on it before with standard
installations.

I don't have a real Mac running 7.5.5 right now (All are on 7.1 or 8.1,
I still don't see a purpose for running 7.5 unless one has a program
that demands it) but I could probably install it somewhere and give it a
try.

Scott,

I did recall having to copy a few additional files
from 8.1 in order to get more stability with OT.

I believe I updated some or most of the Appletalk
extensions and control panels in kind of a
"hit-and-miss" sort of way. I wish I would have
documented my final configuration. I think I also
updated the chooser, appleshare and a few others, but
not sure if that was related to my OT
config/troubleshooting. Some items worked, others
didn't.

Re: Problem w/LC 630, OS 7.5.5, comm slot modem

2002-09-25 Thread Scott Holder

Well, I went ahead and tried it, and it works. Kinda.

First I tried copying everything that seemed to be related... But that
didn't work at all.

So, finally, I moved 7.5.5's Extensions and CPLs out of the System
Folder and copied 8.1's in. Rebooted. Went fine from there, so loaded
Netscape. Bomb, Unimplemented trap.

Rebooted, went into the TCP/IP control panel and it gave me the
Appletalk/MacIP error. I'm having trouble with Appletalk - See below, so
I put it to Ethernet, and voila, it works.

However, there is one somewhat biggie. I can't get Appletalk to start.
Gives me various errors. It seems to be related to the Ethernet driver,
I'm going to try swapping back in an older Ethernet driver to see if
that helps any.

So, looks like it mostly works. I'll report back if I get Appletalk
running.

This makes a couple of people that are looking at the possibility of
retrofitting OT from OS 8.1 to OS 7.5. I 'm curious how well this will
work. (I'd do it myself if I had the files). I hope if anyone tries it,
they will let us all know how it went.

Re: Problem w/LC 630, OS 7.5.5, comm slot modem

2002-09-24 Thread c e

As John pointed out, you may have to look at the card
for mfg info to get an installer for it; but since you
have already found that 8.1 works (7.6 is untested
from your message) that may be the only real
workaround.

But before you go and purchase upgrade these systems
(remember 8.1 is fancier but has a higher resource
overhead), you may want to copy just the OT 1.3.1
elements from your 8.1 (I know this is unsupported
territory) onto your 7.5.5 (keeping the OT 1.1.2
installer or elements in a safe location or disabled)
and check to see if this configuration takes. I
remember doing this on a Quadra 630 for a home DSL
setup I had a while back and it worked well (although
I believe the OT 1.1.1 or 2 may also have worked).

I think there was some specific enet extensions for those cards. Did you

I had a similar problem when I did a clean install of 7.5.5 on my Quadra 630
with Comm Slot ethernet card. Mine was not an Apple card though, there were
no obvious manufacturer's marks on it. I couldn't get the ethernet card to
work with the fresh system folder and of course I had thrown the previous
system folder away already.

My problem was solved when I checked the Mac Driver Museum's network page:

http://www.macdrivermuseum.com/network.shtml

I looked at the chips on the card, and the names of the drivers, and found a
match. The biggest chip on the card said "Sonic", and there was a driver
from "Sonic Systems". The installer recognized my card, and the day was
saved.

Problem w/LC 630, OS 7.5.5, comm slot modem

2002-09-21 Thread Dan Knight

I've got a bunch of old LC 630 DOS Compatibles that I'm trying to get up
and running with System 7.5.5 -- the last one Apple allows free
distribution of.

One a Quadra 630 with a PDS ethernet card, I have no problem at all
getting on the network, but the LC 630s all have Apple branded Comm Slot
ethernet cards. If I boot from an external OS 8.1 drive, I can network,
but nothing I've tried (including Open Transport 1.1.2) lets me network
with the Comm Slot card in System 7.5.5.

This one has me stumped. Any suggestions -- besides investing in a bunch
of OS 7.6.1 or 8.1 CDs?

Thanks!

Hi Ronald,

Try reading the detailed ReadMe's from the various installer
CDs. . . and you decide.
Certain programs like Apple System Profiler for one,
need a minimum of 7.6, plus 7.6.1 has many useful features
and an advanced (compared to 7.5.3) Extensions Manager etc., etc.

7.5.3 wasn't in question, 7.5 and 7.5.5 were.
For example, 7.5 and Open Transport 1.1.2 don't get along.
(see the OTrans ReadMe's)

I've never actually used 7.5.5 though; went from 7.5.3 to 7.6.1
in my Quads to 8.6 in a 9500.

I concur. . . and interestingly upon trying to take a 7.5.3 to 7.7.5 just the
other day the 7.5.5 updater-installer kept saying "you must be using 7.5.3
