Re: Quadra 800 questions

I loaded A/UX 3.x on my aws95 machine using a 6x or 8x apple rommed drive
with no dificulties or hacking (just used the boot floppy and original
install cd). My machine is just an original quadra 950 with the server board
added on later, the cdrom was not in the unit when I purchased it either.

I haven't tried this myself, so take this with a grain of salt, but I am
not
sure that A/UX will recognize the 600i. I seem to recall that A/UX has a
driver only for the x2 speed cd-rom, the 300i (i.e., just like the early
version of system 7 that it works with).

I just bought a 600i to install aux on a quadra and I'll be a little miffed if
the aux floppy boot disk doesn't see the cd-rom drive so I'll let you know how
much salt should be used with your quote Gary. ;) Atleast I wont be completely
surprised if it fails to load from the cd, thanks.

Is it a seperate video card or the *one* video card all the 7100/8100s must

ON an actual 7100A/V, the main video card (about in the center of the
board) is in a PDS (processor direct slot) and will not work in a Quadra
(which has a different PDS.)

FWIW, even though Apple said the 8100's board is the upgrade to PPC for

Outside of service manuals (is this in PDF format?) I don't know of any
outside Gamba's site... but the case isn't that hard to get.

1. Undo four thumbscrews on back.
2. Pull case towards the front and then up.
3. Unhook connectors from top edge of board.
4. Unscrew the center screw in the plastic frame on the board.
5. Pull board toward the front of the case (about 1/2 inch, IIRC.) One of
the top slots the board rests in will have to be pulled up slightly (it's
basically a clip.) Lift, tilt, you're out.

Putting it *in* is a bit more of a pain, since you have to line everything
up right or it doesn't fit properly at all. I never get *that* right on the
first try. (Yes, I seem to have these memorized, thanks to a finicky Q840AV.)

Yet it's easier to deal with than a 7100's case.

Yes it is as it's plastic and doesn't take pleasure in mowing off your
knuckles when you are servicing. Apart from installing and removing the
hard disks, that is a total 'claustrophobia for the hands' experience
in the 840av, and especially annoying if you use UWSCSI cabling.

Booting Quadra 800 from CD [was Re: Quadra 800 CD audioconnections?]

2002-03-29 Thread Charles Butcher

On 28 March 2002 in response to my question:

...will this [Quadra 800] boot from a CD? I have made a CD copy of
the system folder (7.5.1), but it won't boot the machine even when
it's set as the startup disk (SCSI ID is 3). I can't seem to bless
the system folder, either on the Quadra or by copying it to an
iMac, so I guess this could be the reason it won't start from the
CD. Any ideas?

  the pickle wrote:

What are you using to make the CD? Older versions of Toast (prior to
4) had some quirks that made the creation of bootable CDs a rather
black art.

Problem more or less solved. I'm using Toast 5 Titanium, so that
wasn't the issue. The difficulty I had was in creating a blessed
System folder with a Mac face on it. The iMac seemed reluctant to do
this (I guessed because 7.5.1 68k won't run on the iMac, though I'm
sure someone will correct me), and I had trouble doing it on the
Quadra because I don't have a removable drive attached. Anyway I got
there in the end -- not sure how. Once I had a face on the System
folder, Toast created a bootable CD without problems.

My version is very flaky, perhaps because I have the wrong CD driver
extensions. When I boot from the CD, opening or closing windows by
double-clicking the CD icon itself appear to put away the CD, and
the system crashes. However, in the Apple menu I placed aliases to
folders and applications such as Norton, and these open and close OK.

Strange stuff, but probably easily solved with an overhaul of my
ancient and borrowed copy of 7.5.1. My question was really whether
the Quadra was capable of booting from a CD, and evidently it is. End
of problem, but thanks for your attention.

Out of interest, what's the best OS to run on this machine? It
originally came with 7.1, and I found 7.5.1 worth the upgrade -- very
stable. I guess Systems 7.6 and 8 brought further improvements, but I
never got around to trying them.

New to this list. Have a Quadra 800 with a Sonnet 100 PPC upgrade. It
worked fine for 18 months. Now I get a death chimes about a minute into
the boot-up process, before the keyboard and monitor become active. Talked
with Sonnet techs, who had no clue, but agreed to replace the Sonnet card
(3 year warantee). New card, same problem. When I pull the card, or
inactivate it with the PPC Card control panel, the Quadra boots just fine,
and all RAM registers. The few non-PPC apps work fine too. Zapped PRAM,
replaced that aforementioned control panel, without success. I think it
points to a failure on the motherboard, maybe something connected only with
that upgrade slot the Sonnet card uses. Anyone have any other ideas?
Without a PPC upgrade, the Quadra has little usefulness. Any suggestions on
what to do with it? Without a PPC processor, donation to charitable causes
might be more of an insult than charity.

I had the same problem with a DayStar PowerPro in a Q-800. It turned out to
not be properly seated in the PDS slot. It was one of my first upgrades and I
was just too careful. A little contact cleaner and, a little more pushing, a
working PPC800.

Improper seating problems plagues these PDS connectors. They must be seated
completely. If you can feel the interface between the mobo's connector and
the PDS card's connector, and you discover the least little bit of space,
then the PDS card is not seated correctly.

Since these are gold-plated connectors, contact cleaner is neither needed nor
recommended.
