Definitely not for capture, and even for Mac video
output, you'll be hard-pressed to find something that
will be much better.

I missed the original post, and therefore the actual context of the
original question, but I might suggest that a hardware solution could be
one of the Radius Nubus capture cards, such as the Spigot Pro AV, that
captures video at about 30 frames/second in a 320 by 240 raster. Consult
the Macintosh AV FAQ
for more info.

I am planning on running OS 8.1 and using Director 3.1
on a Q840AV to get my feet wet. Does this sound
practical? 8.1 is the newest OS an 840 can use, right?
Would something like Strata Videoshop be easier to start
with?

Director and VideoShop are two apps that do two *different* things.
Director is for making animations and VideoShop is for editing QuickTime
video.

FWIW VideoShop is probably easier to master, even on your machine. For
more info on the 840av, consult the Macintosh AV FAQ
.

Reformat with the tools from the 8.1 CD.

Install 7.x.

That oughta do it.

You *may* be able to get away with simply running the "Update Driver" command
from within Drive Setup on the 8.1 CD, but I wouldn't swear by it until I had
tried it. You can check the driver version in Get Info before and after doing
it.

That sounds interesting. How can I install the 8.1 drivers but keep
the 7.5.5 installation I already have?

I'd like to try that and see what the scores are in Speedometer.

Ya know, that's funny, because Dan Knight had the best disk scores in Speedo
with the drivers from 8.1 whilst running 8.1.

I don't think he tested with the 8.1 drivers on an earlier OS, but I suspect
the HD drivers from 8.1 are the fastest, whilst the rest of the OS rather
chokes the Quad and thus it's faster in other operations with earlier OSes.

I edit video on my Quadra 800 as well. However MacOS 8.1 is not only not
really necessary, but probably not the best choice.

I've installed so man versions of the OS on my Quadra and after testing
them all over and over again with both Speedometer and just general use,
I find that system 7.5.5 is the fastest overall.

8.1 seems to have slightly slower disk access times over and over again,
and besides that it just "feels" slow.

Director 3 is great, just be aware its complex!

One would think so on the surface.

Benchmarking doesn't seem to bear that out, however. :(
