2009-02-18 Thread Andy Heaton

Tony.

You need to do your B + E Test and if you want to drive the larger
goods vehicles above 3500kg you will need to take your C1 class.

Unfortunately your stuck but there is light at the end of the Tunnel !

I am trailing James car to Eddies on Sat 28th, I am sure we could come to
some kind of agreement to get the car to you if you are not coming over to
Bristol. :)

Regards.

Hi Simon,

I did note your suggestion, but it sounded a bit dodgey! Plus I suspect
that I'd have a hard time finding a garage at both ends willing to let me
use their ramp in such a fashion.

Hi Jim
Yes, to tow a bigger trailer you need to take another test if you
passed your driving test after 1 Jan 97. Apparently it's a lot like
your normal test but with a big trailer on the back.
Don't forget that you are also limited to driving a vehicle with a
maximum weight of 3500kg, so hiring a car transporter may be a problem
as well!
Here's a couple of handy websites if you have lots of spare time.

www.dft.gov.uk/pgr/roads/vehicles/vssafety/

www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/DriverLicensing/index.htm

And I think Tony would probably come up against the same license
issues that since 97/98 I don't think he qualifies automatically to
drive vehicles above 3.5 tonnes.
Check on the official websites as it's all getting a bit difficult/
confusing, and many places/people will not know the licensing changes
that occurred then and so are happy to advise you that you CAN drive/
tow a larger vehicle when actually they're possibly wrong, it's only
people with pre-1998 licenses that can do so.
The wife and I have the same issue as neither of us can drive a
horsebox greater than a 3.5 tonne without paying about a grand for one
of us to train for a full C1 drivers license entitlement.

I was shipping out between 4/5 cars per month using this method. We did not
have a single incident where a garage refused, providing they had the
access. We always put a bottle of wine in the car to say thank you as
usually they did not even charge for the service but wanted to do this
partially to support UK small car manufacturers but also because it was
novel and different.

We only ever had one time where the car was damaged and that was when we
were shipping a car out to Eygpt using a large French transport company
(Roland Rats Ratmobile). At the docks the lorry driver was showing off the
car to his mates. Forgot to retie the straps so when he braked hard to avoid
an accident the car bounced forward and broken an indicator lens. Otherwise
incident free!

It will be considerably cheaper and easier than any other method, but hey
it's up to you.

[Quantum Owners] Transporting 2+2

2009-02-18 Thread Simon Musgrove-Wethey

I know I have already mentioned this, but obviously not been taken
seriously, but why not just hire a 5/7 ton box lorry.

It only costs £100, there’s no mileage penalty. You simply drive the car in
the back using the local garages 4 poster and do the same at the other end.

All these emails going back and forth talking about whether dollys are legal
and getting new MOT’s etc you could have driven across the UK and back by
now.

This is so simple, hassle free and by far the safest, quickest and cheapest
option, we used to do it all the time when shipping our cars.

I'd never heard of that, i don't think a lot of people have.
So do they have to take an extra test to be able to tow a bigger
trailer, caravan etc.
