When you cut a thread, you're supposed to go so far in one direction,
then back again to break off the metal you've just cut.
This both improves the thread, and protects the die/tap from damage due
to clogging up.

Actual recommendations vary from person to person. I usually go 1 turn
forward, then back 1/2 turn, then forward 1 turn, then back 1/2
turn.
On the back turn, you can often hear/feel the metal breaking away.

A few drops of thread cutting oil every now and again is advised too; it
really improves the finished thread and makes your cutting tool last
longer.

Unless it's the actual hub bearing thread.
Some Fords have a reverse thread on the hub bearing nut on one side, i
presume to discourage it from undoing due to the wheel rotation.

Thanks Jim,

Already got the regulator out, I always think its the best way of
gauranteeing that you've got the right replacement, and yes it was
tight the appliance of a pair of grips got it moving.

Good idea about oiling the bores.

Re: [Quantum Owners] Re: H4 Not Starting

2009-12-08 Thread Jim Hearne
It certainly sounds like the pressure regulator.
They are usually a right pain to get out, a bit of WD40 sprayed around
it will help.
Make sure you get new O rings (there are 2) with the new reg and use a
bit of fuel or a tiny bit of silicone grease (probably shouldn't if you
have a Cat on the car) to lubricate them when you fit it.
Make sure it presses in square or it can cut the inner O ring.

[Quantum Owners] Re: H4 Not Starting

2009-12-08 Thread Critter
Ok,

Thought I should give you a further update.

The fuel lines are correct i.e. the feed is the feed and the return is
the return.

with the injectors unplugged electrically and the engine turned over I
still get fuel in the bores but perhaps not so much.

I removed the return fuel pipe off the casting next to the pressure
regulator and placed a suitable container for catching the fuel,
turned on the ignition and the fuel pump run and stopped but no fuel
appeared in the container. I then turned the engine over in this
state and still no fuel came out.

So I think I conclude that the fuel pressure regulator is faulty.
Checked at a Ford main dealer and they had one but wanted £55 + Vat !!
so have ordered a new one from EBay @ £26 + £1.95 P&P.

Hopefully if it comes today or tomorrow I will get it fitted by the
weekend. (finger crossed)

As a further thought I was thinking that with that much fuel pouring
into the bores over goodness knows how many months that it would be
prudent to change the oil and filter once it is up and running, Yes?

Many Thanks To All

Trevor
