Re: [Quantum Owners] Black Top Zetec Breathing

2016-03-05 Thread Steve Kodź
Thanks for the answers/comments.

The engine used to have the standard inlet manifold, but is not running
with throttle bodies, so I can no longer vent into the inlet.

The rocker cover breather was just venting downwards - it doesn't look
like that pipe have been blowing out oil. The crankcase (one below the
piston level, was being fed into the old inlet and it was these that I
was considering connecting together, but I now realise that wouldn't be
a good idea. Not having a vacuum to draw out the fumes we will need to
look at some form of catch tank set up.

Steve

Re: [Quantum Owners] 1.8 Zetec 130ps ECU wanted.

2016-03-05 Thread Jim Hearne
Armed with the replacement ecu i started the Zetec in the saloon today
for the first time in 8 years.
It fired straight up followed by a vast cloud of rubber smoke from the
engine bay as the alternator had seized and the belt was slipping over
the pulley.
Turning the alternator fan by jamming a screwdriver in it freed it
enough to spin again and it now seems ok apart from a grumbling noise.
Strange the alternator seized as the car has been in a slightly heated
garage all the time.

Now to get it over here instead of at my parents and finish rebuilding
the interior that i started all that time ago.

Yes, i have a Megasquirt that i fitted into a Ford ecu case but it's not
mapped.
I just want to get it up and running again (after 8 years) with a
standard

Ford ECU.

Re: [Quantum Owners] Black Top Zetec Breathing

2016-03-05 Thread Jim Hearne
Did you mean sump breather (i don't think there is one of those) into
the crankcase breather.

There is just the one crankcase breather (this is just above the sump)
on the Zetec-R and Zetec-E

The Zetec breather system has a connection from the crankcase (on the
front of the block) via a one way valve into the inlet manifold that
maintains a slight vacuum inside the crankcase.
There are oil drain passages in the block from the crankcase to the head
so the crankcase and rocker cover are directly connected effectively.
The rocker cover has a vent pipe that goes off to the air filter, the
engine will normally have a slight vacuum inside the crankcase and will
be sucking a small amount of air in via this pipe.

If you remove the connection into the inlet manifold like a lot of
people do then you will have some pressure in the crankcase (from
combustion fumes getting past the rings) instead of a small vacuum.
This will tend to blow out some oil along with the crankcase fumes and
need a catch tank as been mentioned.
With the standard system this oil just gets sucked into the engine and
burnt.

I might be thick, but I don't remember A sump breather, only crankcase.
(Pressed steel thing on the exhaust side). Got a pic?

So long as you have one end of the system plumbed in to the air intake it
should be fine. I'd put some kind of oil catch in the path too personally
though.

Re: [Quantum Owners] Black Top Zetec Breathing

2016-03-05 Thread Matthew Wastell
Personally I wouldn't directly vent to atmosphere as may get oil residue around
the vent, even those aftermarket tanks - I've often noticed oil residue (maybe
only on turbos though). On 'my' turbo Zetec I ran the breathers through a small
air compressor line catch tank thingy and it caught every drop - I was actually
surprised that it worked so well.

Question is - why do you want to join them anyway?

Need a couple more bits then hopefully this will be a TKC mag feature .
