Hi all,

I’ve been doing some reading on the rules about headlights as for a long time I’ve wanted to improve my 2+2’s headlights, which seem particularly underwhelming after using my modern car.

There’s a lot of conflicting guidance online, which seems to stem from some changes to the MOT rules. So I started there, with the relevant part seeming to be section 4.1.4: https://www.gov.uk/guidance/mot-inspection-manual-for-private-passenger-and-light-commercial-vehicles/

If I’ve understood it correctly, replacing your halogen bulbs with HID or LED equivalents is forbidden for any car used after 1st April 1986, and will lead to an automatic failure (‘light source and lamp not compatible’). But the part that’s of interest to me, the amended rule, seems to state that there is NOT an automatic failure if you have replaced the *entire* headlamp unit with an LED or HID alternative. I’m presuming that they would need to be CE/UK CA marked, or given an E number but, again, that aspect seems to generate conflicting answers – and imported Japan-only or USA-only models seem to be able to pass MOTs just fine without those markings from what I’ve read.

There seem to be loads of possible replacement headlight units out there so I was wondering firstly if I’ve understood all of this correctly (anyone know a tame MOT tester?) and secondly if any of you have replaced your Q’s entire original halogen units with an LED or HID alternative. I’d be fascinated to hear what you picked and how it played out.

Hope you’re all having a great weekend.

Matthew

Yes my 2+2 head lights ( and flaps) have gone !
I have created a mount with the new 90mm Hella unit and a small indicator(
also modular Hella but about 40mm dia) .
The 90mm unit is a bi-xenon , it has a single bulb with a flap to create
the dip cutoff pattern needed for mot.
Two additional items are also needed for xenon ( not sure about led), that
is headlamp washers and self levelling.
Hella sell universal kits to go with the 90mm products , but the washers
are easily and more cheaply done with a universal windscreen wash kit.

Levelling is a little more tricky, the Hella kit uses ultrasonics , I am
using OEM lever arm sensors(BMW mini). I am making up a small driver module
that will read the inputs and adjust the std OEM headlight motors . I will
publish the build details including firmware as open source as I do all my
work on GitHub.
My friendly MOT man is going to let me use the beam aligner out of hours to
set it up and confirm all is well before the actual MOT test. But I need to
finish getting the car back on road before I can do that.

As far as I'm aware they allow hid etc if they have washers and self levelling? Correct my if I am wrong?

Yes it’s me. I got the folding wind deflector (and a bag) off a mini (20?? -
2016). I had to make wooden extension pieces both sides which I painted with a
rubbery type black spray paint which matches mini nicely. The pins needed
extending which I did with a lathe to reduce diameter a bit and sleeved with
same diameter to longer lengths so they still move like before.
The mounting holes in the top sides of the back seat were filled with the
plastic sleeves used for wires in ceramic pots as nicely tapered and OEM look.
Can take closeup pics for you if you like.

Rolf, I modified a wind deflector from a Mini. Sides and the pins needed

2017-09-03 Thread Anthony Johnson

I put mk1 HEATED Audi TT sears in my 2+2. Narrow enough to fit in without
touching door panels but had to make new mounts as runners s much longer than
Fiesta. Heater controls fitted nicely in centre console.

As far as I know I just get it MoTed as normal and then get the fuel class
changed at a DVLA place to get zero rated road tax.

[Quantum Owners] Re: Perennial spring question

2017-07-05 Thread Anthony Johnson
*2+2 SPRINGS*
I've now nearly finished my electric 2+2 conversion and finding the extra
weight in the front of motor and half the batteries has made the front ride
height a bit low, as expected. AC50 Motor + batteries is 137Kg which is a
little more than the 1.8L Zetec engine it had before but may not be much
more than diesel. Wondering if the stiffer diesel springs would suit or
what other options I may have. Have no idea what I had before, but not much
evidence of them ever having been 'red'. It is no. 307 so "late" sub frame
I suspect. Already bought Gaz adjustable shocks. *Can anyone advise me on
where I might find more suitable springs?*

I may be able to take it to Castle Coome '17 as it is driveable but still
needs an MoT.

Re: [Quantum Owners] The ultimate fully electric 2+2

2016-01-31 Thread Anthony Johnson
I forgot to ask what you folk may advise re shocks. I'm happy to retain my
springs and certainly don't want to lower suspension (especially as car may be
heavier than before) but do Spax etc adjustable shocks really make a worthwhile
difference?
I found heated windscreen for my project too as Mk4 dash vents didn't work too
well before. Car is only really going to used for commuting so batteries should
get me to work and back a few times before recharging at either end!

[Quantum Owners] The ultimate fully electric 2+2

2016-01-30 Thread Anthony Johnson
My conversion of a 2+2 with Mk4 dash is well underway now with the help of
the kids at my school! Everything has been stripped back, modified
subframe for electric motor/batteries has been galvanised, all suspension
components sandblasted and repainted and about to start putting it all back
together after bodyshell painted. I will be fitting electric GM power
steering, using petrol tank space for suspended space saver spare wheel,
ceramic heater in place of heater exchanger from engine, and the batteries
will be divided between the space behind the back seat as well as above
gearbox/motor.
*I write here to ask members for ideas/experience for how to soup it up to
be the ultimate electric 2+2.* Ideas and help on the following as well as
things I haven't thought of would be appreciated:

   - I'd like heated front seats (as no warm engine!). Any ideas on heated
production/sporty seats that fit nicely in the 2+2 or will I have to
retrofit heater elements in XR2 seats? Or even heated electric adjustment
   seats?
   - Has anyone found easy way to do electric boot release or is it just a
   case of engineering/fitting a solenoid?
   - Can brake servo be fitted directly to back of brake pedal box as there
is space now with no engine (the angles on the bar are not quite identical
   hence the question).
   - Has anyone got advice or quality bits for sale that can help me build
   the ultimate fully electric 2+2?

 Anthony,

They fold forward, and lift the rear slightly as they do, but there are no
 associated electrical parts with them.

Black leather, very comfortable. They are labelled 'airbag' but as far as I
know contain no airbag parts. I can sort some pictures tonight (need to
 pull them from the camera).

Shall we touch base after we both get back from holidays?

[Quantum Owners] Electric 2+2, selling engine and stainless exhaust.

2014-07-22 Thread Anthony Johnson
I will be trying (again) to convert my 2+2 using a kit, this time as a school
project. At the same time it will get a refurb, better electric windows, heated
seats etc and as many upgrades and toys as makes sense. It already has a mk 3
fiesta dash as never liked original dash.
Anyone done conversion. Any guidance on this would be appreciated. Also with
how to make the rest of the car the Ultimate 2+2.
A low mileage Xetec 1.8, stainless exhaust and fuel tank will be up for grabs
if anyone is interested.

I have a Black Quantum 2+2 that I am thinking of converting to electric

Any ideas? Even the weight of the basic kit would be a good start.

 Thanks!

 Hi,

Did you ever do the electric conversion. About to do one with kids at my
 school. Any ideas, help?
