I need the part numbers for O/S and N/S drive shafts for a 1985 Fiesta XR2.

and used to be easier to find, half the price etc.

I have a 2 + 2 which failed its IVA test yesterday on braking
efficiency being low at 55% needs to be above 60%. This is partially
caused by Quantum quoting a gross weigt of 1300kg when in fact its
1149kg (in my case). If this figure was used the efficiency would be
above 60%. I have standard fiesta mk2 brakes fitted. Can mk2 xr2
discs / calipers and drums /shoes slave cylinders be fitted without
further modification ?. I think the larger front disc and larger
shoes / slave piston area would help to increase braking efficiecy.
Any help would be appreciated. Paul

Almost.
On the Mk1 the handbrake cable is a exposed cable that goes round a pulley
and lever to equalise it.
You don't need the brackets that hold these on the Mk2 with it's twin
enclosed cables so you can cut them off.
Otherwise it's the same, i've used a Mk1 rear axle on a Mk2 Fiesta in the
past.

Anyone else notice a difference in front to rear track width?
ive measured mine and its a whole 60mm wider at the front, or 30mm
narrower at the rear each side measured at the base of the wheel.

im not sure how this has come about as the rear track is governed by
the rear axle and i would have thought that the front track could not
differ from the fiesta much because of driveshaft lengths, looking at
fiesta data the difference is about 10mm overall so why is this?
Looking at my car the front wheels protrude slightly from the arches a
touch and the rears sit in noticeably far

Any ideas?

The axle is as it came on the car the front wishbones and track arms
were all replaced new in pairs during the rebuild

Cheers

Hi All

Just let everyone know, the Coupe that was on the Newark stand for
breaking is now tucked up safe in my garage.
I will take some time to consider it's future. It's a toss up between
1) restoring and selling on. 2) breaking up and selling the parts. 3)
turning it into a track car. Or 4) turning it into a 6 wheeler van.

Your thoughts ???

Any idea where to get a M16 left thread lock nut
It is the right hand side lock nut from the anti roll bar of the saloon.

Ford does not have them anymore.

You can't repair servos, they are crimped together, you need to replace it.

You can (or used to) be able to buy seal only or seals and piston kits to
repair the master cylinder.

I am both happy and sad to say that today I sold my Xtreme. It took 6
months to sell, but it finally has a very loving new home for a
sensible sum I was quite happy with. It is an understatement to say I
will miss it as it's been a major part of my life for the last 8 years
(2 in build, and 6 in driving), but I know it's in good hands.

Rather unfortunately (another understatement) he was bumped from
behind on the nearside rear wheelarch coming into slow traffic on his
way home from mine on the M6. It's only fibreglass damage thankfully,
but understandably he's gutted, and so am I! How unlucky is that -
he'd only owned it for 1 hour

I'm sure many of you will be seeing him around, as he lives a few
doors away from Kermit's current owner Ian down in Letchworth, and the
two of them will have lots of fun together!

I'll let him introduce himself if he so wishes, and don't worry
all... I'll still be looking in from time to time, and will probably
still go to Stoneleigh, but with all the family in our VW Camper (when
I've found it).

Regards to all

Doug

Still progressing with the web site, and it's in the right direction I

RE: [Quantum Owners] Re: 2+2 front wiring

2012-02-17 Thread Chris
I've had that happen to me. One of the rear light bulb holders decided to
short out and blow the fuse. Up went the flaps and engage panic mode.
Luckily I had 'only' just driven into a lit village.
Replacing the fuse didn't fix it 'cos of the shorting out so I unplugged the
flap motor, tricked it into opening the flaps and drove home on one
headlight.

I guess the factory get out would be to swap the good bulb to the flap
actuated side.
I am however with the others double wire for safety rather than changing
lamps at the side of the road in the dark with rain adding to the
experience.

Thats a good idea but depending how it was mounted it would only be
visible with the roof down. As I currently only use the hardtop, it
would'ent be pratical. If mounted underneath the roll cage it would
solve the problem but I sometimes carry passengers and depending upon
the light it could affect headroom (not that there is much anyway)

Hi All,

I was thinking about getting a fabricator to make up a couple of SS
fuel tanks for the coupes/2+2. Given the total chat over the years,
what is the best build spec, do you reckon to make them as useful and
multipurpose as possible? e.g. outlet(s), swirl pots, even after
market fuel gauge senders?

It would be simple enough to give them my old tank and say 'another
like that please', but maybe I could do better? Maybe others in the
club would like one, too?

Thoughts, guys...

That's what mine originally was. I replaced it with a new one that only had

I don't think you can get the manual kits anymore.

I have an MOT coming up in a couple of months and have a couple of
niggly jobs to do before it goes for the test.

Does anyone know where I can source the adjustable part for the
nearside headlamp mounting. I fabricated one for the last MOT but it
lasted only a few weeks.

I also need to source a pair of the locking 'thingies' that the split
pin fits into on the rear hubs. It is a castellated fitting that sits
over the hub nut. Alternatively a supplier for an appropriate
castellated hub nut.

Thank you

[Quantum Owners] Re: 2+2 update

2008-10-06 Thread Chris

I had a similar problem in my coupe, there was a slight 'pop' as the
fuse went and the headlight flaps closed with the lights still on! Also
noticed one of the rear lights went out at the same time.
It turned out to be a dodgy rear bulb holder which was fusing out the
diagonal circuit.
Try changing the rear bulb holder and light bulb diagonally across from
you problem headlight.

Chris G

>
- that bloody headlight[tm] - I've followed the loom back till it
disappears into the car, and investigated the fuse box, and can't find
anywhere the reason why it consistently blows the fuse for the driver's
side dipped beam every time I go over a road hump. I'll get it, but I
think the next step is to remove all the interior trim and see what's
going on. I've found some really bad joints under there...

Subject: [Quantum Owners] engine conversion

Hi all,
First posting, probably more to follow!
I have a 2plus2, bought to "tinker" with after taking early
retirement, and I have tinkered!
It now requires a little more work than I wish to do on my own.
It has a 950 (!) Fiesta engine with 4 speed box and I assume, 950 D/
shafts and brakes.
I wonder if any of you knowledgable folk could recommend a garage or
mechanic that would be prepared to upgrade the engine to either a CVH
or Zetec. I am in Buckinghamshire but distance is not a problem as I
took her down to Hastings for a guy to look at and he agreed to do the
conversion, then backed out.
Any help or advice would be very welcomed.
Many thanks and a happy new year to all, Martin being overtaken by
milkfloats and cyclists!!!

[Quantum Owners] That was the week that was

2009-05-01 Thread Chris
A great big nightmare!

Think back to Saturday (wibble wobble wibble wobble wibble wobble)

In the morning I found the exhaust was trying to fall off due to the
middle bracket being AWOL. A quick bodge with some thick wire and I
could get to work.
- Monday - I ordered a new exhaust and picked it up around 3pm, no time
to fit it that day though.
- Tuesday - After work it snapped in half so I fitted the new one (but
too high so it hit the tank and body, oops). When I ran the engine I
discovered that by fixing one loud noise I had uncovered another one.
The engine sounded terrible, I checked the oil, oh, bit low, topped it
up. Sounds better but still bad. When was the last time I changed the
plugs? Ah, 1½ years ago, ok new plugs. Engine sounds much better but
exhaust noise is horrible, must be the downpipe (well it IS at least 15
years old). No probs, I’ve got a new one lurking in the garage, but no
gasket……..
- Wednesday – After work drop into local Ford garage, they have loads of
gaskets but no part numbers to confirm it’s the right one! Order a new
one. Get home and change front pads (so THAT’S why the brakes are naff).
- Thursday – After work pick up the gasket (I took the downpipe in to be
sure) go home and replace it. Sound easy doesn’t it. Only 3 nuts. One
stud sheared off, another threatened to, I didn’t try the third!
- Friday - Got up Really early to get to Fords 1st thing. Yes they can
look at it today but they won’t have it ready for the weekend and it
will probably end up needing a new manifold as they don’t drill out bust
studs. Oh, that’s Stoneleigh out then, hmm that went down well at
home……..
At 4pm I got a phone call, the cars fixed. Huh??
It turns out someone didn’t turn up so my car jumped up the list. It
took 3 hours but they managed to get the downpipe off and all 3 studs
out (there was enough sticking out). New bits on, it all works and is a
lot quieter. YIPPEE.

Right then, where’s the tent…..

Well Crash Test has done it again, only a mild slide into the kerb on
ice this time so not a major job to repair but I need to know what the
lower track control arms are from as I need a nearside one but will
replace the two as I'm at it.
Also what is the front antiroll bar off as that is bent as well.

I'm thinking they are probably Mk3 Escort but just need confirmation.
Thanks in advance.

Subject: [Quantum Owners] Saloon Handbrake Cable

Does anybody know which variant of Escort that the handbrake for the
saloon comes from? The one fitted is the normal XR2 one which is very
good in the way it goes across the petrol tank.

I have had a quick look on Ebay but there seems to be different types,
some are one piece, others have separate parts for the left and right.
It just says Escort in the build manual.

[Quantum Owners] Tailgating

2010-03-29 Thread Chris
I was with my brother-in-law yesterday in his land rover and he kept
noticing a white saloon behind us Way too close for comfort. It never
backed off and was always filling the rear view mirror. Each time he
spotted it, it shocked him and he wondered what kind of idiot was
driving it!
BUT
Then he remembered that it was on a trailer and we were TOWING it !
:-)
Doh !

hi folks

I need advice as to what exhaust will be the best fit on my 2+2
the current one contacts the underside in at least 2 places and on
opposite sides so no chance of realigning it without major surgery,
also just looking at it it is obvious it is not a good fit / shape for
the car,
although the engine is currently an OHV it will be changed soon for a
CVH but either way im prepared to mate it up to the OHV while it is
still in the car, that bit isn't the problem its the rest of the
system running the length of the car I want to ensure is the best fit
possible, so what have you guys used and found to be the best fit? I
would assume a genuine for XR2 exhaust would be the best since that is
what the car was designed around but I may be wrong, Quantum sell
different exhausts in their site for a reasonable cost, do these fit
well ?
I know I could go and get a stainless one made up but at the prices
ive been quoted that money would easily pay for a new soft top which
is something I need desperately also.

any help gratefully received
cheers and have a good bank holiday : )

2010-07-06 Thread Chris
I had to do it one side at a time, so..
Getting the old springs out.
Getting the new springs in.
Getting the new damper bush to go down on the spike (even though I
cleaned all the rust off and used washing up liquid to help it), my G
clamps weren't playing ball.
Getting ALL the holes to line up again so I could refit the bolt at the
bottom and fix it at the top.
Like I say..joy.
Still, the ride is a lot better now. :-)

Ah, one side at a time would not help at all as the axle and the anti
roll bar will try and keep the axle level.
With both sides hanging you can do both sides at the same time, the
springs will come out once the top mount on the shock is undone.
A big crowbar under the extension on the shock will get it off the peg.
Washing up liquid and a clean peg will normally go back on just leaning
on the shock but otherwise a big G clamp with a socket under the end to
clear the peg should push it back on.
Don't push it right onto the peg, there should be a gap.
Springs go back in and then lift the axle back up.

How long did the last shocks last ?

The coupe has been running coil over shocks at the front since I
rebuilt it, however the coil overs came with a load of stuff that
someone was going to make into a track day only car. The upshot is
that I have never known the spring rates and the ride is as firm as
you are likely to get. Ontop of this the springs do actually "squeak"
when driving along, they are slightly rubbing on the shock body
section.
Anyway that's the history now for the question. I have sourced a pair
of MK2 XR2 front legs and by using the top fitments of the MK1 coil
overs I have managed to fit them to the car, however does anyone have
any idea as to how much lower than standard springs I can go without
fouling and also what spring rate I should be looking for to get a
reasonably comfortable ride but not too soft? I am running 195 45 15
tyres on OZ wheels with a 10mm spacer to get the tyres to clear the
leg. I still have other works to do to the car so it is not on its
wheels just yet.

It could be parallel actually, too long since i saw one now.
But it might be stepped parallel like some of the much later Ford ones
are, 2 different sizes each side of the pinch bolt groove.

RE: [Quantum Owners] Re: Coupe roofs

2010-09-27 Thread Chris
Dave

I can see your point about not spending large amounts of money on a car
if your looking to sell it but many owners (including myself) have had
their cars for many years (in my case 12 years) and intend to keep them
for many, many more. Therefore the need for replacement panels is always
there.
The sunroof in my coupe/saloon/MK2 (whatever you want to call it) had
leaked for years until I glued it shut with sealant and covered the edge
with duck tape.
I did that because you can't buy the sealing strips or a new sunroof of
the same size anymore, they are all either long and too thin or too
short and fat so in order to fit a new one the roof will have to be
filled in then cut out again.
That is why Eddie has made a mould for the roof.
I like the idea of a solid sunroof like on the MK1 but I have height
issues in my car (need to get a bass drum onto the back seat) so
unfortunately that won't work for me.

Hi Eddie,

When you say Coupe, do you mean the hatchbacks? Mine has problems
around the sunroof area, but I don't think it's worth spending the
money on. I'll do a localised repair with tissue and make good with
filler. For what it's worth, I can't see much point in spending much
money on the early cars, as their value is so low. I note that there's
a really nice one that appears on Ebay/pistonheads etc for £1500-ish
every so often, but never seems to sell.

Obviously, the Club's work on 003 is a different case, as I can see
its historic value, and it would be nice to see it exhibited
somewhere. But that's a one off, and I can't really see anyone
seriously paying much more than £600/700 for any of the others, even
in good condition. So the repairs are going to be cost-driven in the
extreme!

For what it's worth, the sunroof on my car doesn't look to be a very
good design in any case, using a boot-seal around the lip, with
consequent large gaps between the sunroof panel and the roof edge,
which must be noisy. The clip doesn't look man-enough to hold such a
large panel tight, and the 2-part hinges are a bit domestic. Sorry,
but I'd advise anyone who wanted a sunroof in a saloon to fit an after
market glass one - much cheaper, and easier, probably a better result,
and more sensible in view of the value of the car. In fact, I have a
couple in my loft that they can have if they are serious..!

Sorry if I sound a bit negative (OK, very negative), but I'm afraid
that I don't share your optimism, and it seems like a lot of work for
a limited market.

Now, a nice-looking dash moulding to replace the XR2 item, a bit like
the one in my 2+2, but maybe a bit prettier. I could see a small, but
useful market for that??

Dave.

RE: [Quantum Owners] Misc parts, Can't find them!!

The wind noise from the doors is usually cured by a strip of thinish
flat stick on rubber stuck to the shell running round where the door
hoop closes in.
You can get that from trim suppliers like Woolies trim

http://www.woolies-trim.co.uk/c-132-sa-strip.aspx

They sell the door seals aswell.

Fog light switches etc can be found on ebay, brand new aswell as
second-hand.

saloon! Found out its my door seals! any idea where I can get
these? Also some of the switches on the right hand side of the dash
(Fog lights etc) are pretty knackard too! Again the same question, I
can't find them, Can't find a breaker near me with any :(

Thanks!
Luke.

[Quantum Owners] Naughty Q

2010-10-17 Thread Chris
My Q is in a lot of trouble, it's been caught smoking so now it's
grounded!
When the engine was cold it ran lumpy at low speed.
When the engine got hot it also blew Clouds of white smoke out of the
exhaust leaving a trail of thick fog behind it at every roundabout.
After nursing it to the in-laws (around the corner from a garage I
trust) I opened the bonnet (eventually seeing the engine through the
fog) to find that it was peeing oil into a corner of the engine bay.
Me thinks the head gasket has blown.
I'll be ringing the garage in the morning.

That included a gasket set and bolts, new timing belt, 2 oil changes +
filters, antifreeze, new header bottle, various seals (as they could get to
them anyway) and £500 labour at a Ford main dealer.

They may be a bit pricey at times but they do a very good job.

I just hope that the Q isn’t in any hurry to have another holiday there!

£800 is a lot of money for a head gasket. I did mine last year and the parts
were £20 (head set and set of bolts), Plus antifreeze, oil and filter.
Labour wise I spent about 8 hours which included valve lapping and head
decoking. A garage should be able to do it in a lot less time as I'm well
out of practise.

RE: [Quantum Owners] CIE Continuous Enforcement

They probably arrange to pay monthly for their insurance, get the
certificate, tax the car then stop paying each month therefore invalidating
the insurance.
By having the certificate they can 'prove' the have insurance if anyone

Subject: [Quantum Owners] CIE Continuous Enforcement

I got information on this from another forum that I am a member of and
wondered if everybody on the group, especially those with more that
one car were aware of it. This law comes into effect in January 2011
and basically says that if your car is uninsured but still taxed then
you may get a fine or have the vehicle impounded.

I have checked on the direct gov website and it states that if the
vehicle is uninsured then you have to return the tax disk and declare
it SORN. I know I have in the past taken a car of the road but left a
valid tax disk on as it had little left and I could not see the point
in returning it.

They are going to check vehicles on the motor insurance database MIB
and if it is not insured but still showing as being taxed then the
owner will be sent a letter. If the registered owner does not respond
then a £100 fixed penalty will be issued, this may then be followed up
with a fine of up to £1000 or the vehicle impounded.

The purpose of this new law is to reduce the number of uninsured
drivers on our roads. Do uninsured drivers generally tax their
vehicles? How do they do it without valid insurance?

Hi Ed,

I would like to also wish you all the best with the new venture and
look forward to seeing the new models however (and I apologise if this
is taken the wrong way)...

with SVA the way it is would the newer mark fiesta's, or even a Puma,
not be better for the future? With the KA only having a 1.3 as
standard won't single donor status be tricky unless the original
engine is used, and the rest of the components are a little suspect
too (brakes, suspension etc) in comparison to the readily available
Fiesta or Puma donors?

I for one would especially welcome a move towards a jap based Quantum
based on the Almera, or maybe a rwd mx5? Just thoughts, probably on my
own with the jap route and may be too much work to achieve!

I'd especially love to see a new saloon/coupe, minus sunroof and pop
up lights!

necessary.
due to the weight of the 2+2 iv heard something like the best setup is
1.4 springs and 1.1 rear shocks? or something odd like that, I'm
assuming ive got 1.1 stuff all round as that was the base of the car
(blue front shocks) but what is best for ride and comfort?

any help much appreciated

RE: [Quantum Owners] Re: MK1 Fiesta door lock

2011-02-16 Thread Chris
Physically it will fit as mk1 and mk2 locks are the same size but the
various levers in the locks are different, hence my problem.
However if your car has mk1 locks already it would be a straight swap.

If the mk1 part will fit a saloon, then I'd be interested.

Mine has been playing up for a while.
Would be handy to be able to swap it when I finally get space/time/
weather to start on the car properly.

RE: [Quantum Owners] Re: MK1 Fiesta door lock

2011-02-16 Thread Chris
Unfortunately no, they both look the same from the outside :(
Basically when you look at the lock from the inside of the door, if all the
rod connections are on the outside of the mechanism then you have a MK1
lock, but if there is one rod connection in the middle then you have a MK2
lock.

Would it be possible to work out which type of lock I have from
outside i.e. without dismantling the door?
Possibly by examining the locking system?

I'm not in a position to do that at the moment; too much going on.

RE: [Quantum Owners] Re: Quantum Saloon Mk2 kit car breaking for spares on e-...

I was told by the old old Q that they still had the saloon mould but had
just cut it into quarters to save on storage space. I presume it was
included in the stuff that Eddie bought.

Rather than using it for the benefit of one owner would it not be better to
use it to produce panels as and when needed.

Hi all, have just had this from Kevin Musson, promoter for Newark kit car
show. Sounds interesting so I am posting it for you all to look at.
