[Quantum Owners] Converting a 2+2 into rear wheel drive

2012-06-09 Thread Keith Joseph
Hi,

I built my 2+2 back in 1998 and am now thinking of a major re-build.
Does anyone have any experience or know anyone who has attempted to
convert their 2+2 into rear wheel drive?

I remember many years ago someone converted theirs into 4wd, I think
using an old Fiat Panda but I am after something a bit more sporty as
a basis, possibly a Mazda MX5 or something like that.

If anyone can offer any advice, I would be most grateful.

Cheers,

Keith

[Quantum Owners] Re: Converting a 2+2 into rear wheel drive

2012-06-10 Thread Keith Joseph
Dear All,

Many thanks to everyone who has replied to my post - It has been very
informative and certainly gives me a lot to think about and to start
looking into.

If I decide to go ahead with the project I shall definitely keep
everyone up to speed with my progress (or not as the case may be!)

Thanks again and if there are any other possible rwd conversions, I
would be interested to know.

On a separate subject, during the 15 years or so that I've been a
member of the Quantum Owners club, I've always hoped that a North of
England group might be set up but as yet, I don't believe there is
one. Does anyone who is in the inner workings of the QOC happen to
know the exact number of Quantum owners located within certain
regions? If so, I wonder if it would be an idea to contact members in
regions which don't have local groups to see if they would be
interested in having some regular get together's? At least if I knew
there were several others within the Teesside area who were interested
in starting a group, we could all get in touch, especially as Croft
circuit is within our region :-)

Thanks again for everyone's help and information.

Cheers,

Keith

Hi Steve,

Many thanks for the invite but as the Quantum's not taxed or tested at
the moment, I don't think I'll make it.

I might just contact Steven as you suggest and see what we can
organise - Think I'd better get the car back on the road sharpish!

Cheers,

Keith

Hi Russell,

I am in Yarm. I've got a yellow 2+2, although it's not been out at all
this year yet but when it's roadworthy I'm often out towards Darlo,
especially the back road from Yarm past Croft :-)

How about you?

Hi Darren,

Thanks for the advice - Sounds like you've performed major surgery to
your 2+2 - Hope it's all working as it should. As for an M3 powered
quantum, now that does sound tempting but I think its a bit out of my
price range! Sounds like a massive undertaking but one which would be
well worth the challenge.

Cheers again,

[Quantum Owners] 1.6 CVH Heater coolant pipes

2013-01-03 Thread Keith Joseph
Hi and Happy New Year to one and all.

I'm after a bit of advice regarding coolant pipework on my 2+2.

I have a problem whereby I cannot seam to get any real heat into the cabin
through the heater. (I've had this problem for several years but it's
finally got to the top of the list of jobs!)

I have flushed the system out thoroughly and have just replaced the
thermostat which opens as it should. I think I have traced the problem to
the short hose which is connected to the "Y" Piece and goes over the large
metal bar and onto the top of the heater matrix connection on the bulkhead.
I think the rubber hose has seen better days and is simply not allowing
enough hot water to pass through it into the heater matrix.

I have started looking for a replacement hose but am struggling to find one
- Does anybody know where I can get one from / what the correct name for
this small pipe is?

Also, as I have a manual choke on my carb, can anyone advise if I still
need to retain the hot water supply to the bottom of the carb (Weber VV),
or can I simply remove this pipe and therefore get rid of the "Y" piece
also?

Many thanks for your help.

Cheers,

Keith

Re: [Quantum Owners] 1.6 CVH Heater coolant pipes

2013-01-03 Thread Keith Joseph
Thanks for that, it looks like a really useful website. I can see me
spending lots of time (and money!) on that site.

As regards the autochoke, I really don't know / can't remember as it was
taken off at least 10 years ago now. I can only assume that it was
electrical now that you have pointed out that the hose from the Y piece is
required for the inlet manifold. I seem to remember that there is a single
wire which has been redundant for many years - I'll bet that was the wire
leading to the original choke.

Cheers,

Keith

[Quantum Owners] Re: 1.6 CVH Heater coolant pipes

2013-01-03 Thread Keith Joseph
Thanks for the advice.

I'm pretty sure I've got it plumbed in as per the "Ford" diagram but I will
check again in the daylight.

Having run the car warm, I can feel the pipes leading to the Y Piece and
from the Y piece getting hot but I'm pretty sure the pipe from the Y piece
to the heater matrix is not "flowing" water through it as it only getting
warm. It feels very soft and easy to compress - I think when it gets hot it
simply collapses such that the water doesn't so much flow through it as
trickle, therefore I'm only getting a luke warm heat flow when the fan is
on.

I think new piping is the order of the day!

Cheers again,

Keith

I will third that, I've been meaning to get a new one for several years.

Does anyone have a spare/unused soft top, contacts that can sell a

I've been looking for a while but have had no luck.

Currently in the process of stripping out the interior and

I was thinking about purchasing the fabric and just taking apart

If anyone had any information I would forever be in their debt.

[Quantum Owners] 2+2 Engines

2013-04-13 Thread Keith Joseph
Does anyone know what engines, apart from the standard 1.6 CVH, will fit
onto the mk2 XR2 gearbox in my 2+2?

I've managed to shear off one of the bolts holding the thermostat housing
into the head and after attempting to remove the remainder of the bolt,
I've snapped the stud extractor within the sheered bolt! Also a couple of
other bolt holes have stripped so I think the head has seen better days,
even tough it was reconditioned only 21,000 miles ago, as was the full
engine.

Ideally, I want to take the whole engine out and drop in a complete
replacement, preferably something with a bit more power that the standard
1.6 CVH - If anyone has something lying around in the back of their garage
that they want rid of, please let me know :-)

Cheers,

Keith

[Quantum Owners] Re: 2+2 Engines

2013-04-14 Thread Keith Joseph
Dear All,

Many thanks for the information and advice given regarding engines.

I think my simplest option is going to be either a replacement head or
complete CVH engine if I cant get hold of just the head. I don't think I
will have the time to change the block to a Zetec, especially after seeing
what modifications I'll have to do to the subframe, not to mention the cost.

Thanks again, and if anyone has a spare engine they don't want / use / want
to get rid of, please let me know.

Cheers,

Keith

Re: [Quantum Owners] 2+2 Engines - Update (If anyone's interested!)

2013-04-21 Thread Keith Joseph

Hi Jon,

I did contemplate using a helicoil kit but I thought these were to
create a thread of the same diameter as the hole. My problem required me
to create a thread of much smaller diameter than the hole that I'd made
by extracting the broken stud - I'm not sure though as I've never used
one of those kits before.

Maybe it would have been an easier fix?

Thanks, and if I need to just fix a stripped thread, I'll definitely
invest in a helicoil kit .

Cheers,

Keith

*Subject:* [Quantum Owners] 2+2 Engines - Update (If anyone's
interested!)

Following on from my previous message regarding the snapped
thermostat housing stud and broken stud extractor, I thought I
might as well have a go at drilling it and the snapped stud out of
the head.

After a couple of snapped drill bits, lots of swearing and a load
of aluminium shrapnel, the offending articles were successfully
extracted from the head. This did leave a hole though which was
considerably bigger than the original bolt hole which presented my
next problem.

By now, I'd gone past the point of no return, so I decided to use
a tap in the hole to create a decent thread. The next problem I
faced was the fact that the bolt which was going to fit this hole
was too big to go through the holes in the thermostat housing.
Even if I made the holes bigger in the housing, there still
wouldn't have been enough room to do up a bolt as the head of the
bolt would have clashed with the side of the thermostat housing.

I then had a brain wave!

If I could manufacture a stud which was two different diameters, I
could thread each end with different size die's -
One which would fit into the head, the other which would fit
through the holes in the housing and leave enough room to get a
nut on to secure the housing in place.

I've attached pictures of the stages I went through to create the
studs.

Once I'd finished them, I cut a small slice in the narrow end of
the stud, just to allow the head of a flat screw driver to fit in
so as to help tighten the studs into the head (I left the die on
the thread so that after cutting the slots I could clean up the
threads so that the nuts would fit back on cleanly).

I made two of these studs as I had to drill two of the three holes
in the head - the original aluminium threads just seam
to disintegrate. I'm very pleased to say that the studs fitted
snugly into the head and that the thermostat housing has been
re-attached, the system filled with water and pressurised and no
leaks so far. Very re-leaved!

Cheers to everyone who has offered advice and help,

    Keith

[Quantum Owners] 2+2 rear seat back

2013-07-05 Thread Keith Joseph
Hi, can anyone please advise on the following?

I would like to mount a couple of 12" speakers into the upright section of
where the rear seats would normally be in my 2+2. The holes for the
speakers would be circular in shape and therefore have no square edges,
(which would tend to introduce points of stress and potential crack
propagation points).

My question is, would cutting these two holes adversely affect the
structural rigidity of the body shell. If so, if I were to put some
strengthening braces on the inside (in the space between the boot and the
cabin) would this be sufficient to retain the rigidity of the shell.

Many thanks for any help.

Cheers,

Keith

[Quantum Owners] engine required!

2013-07-15 Thread Keith Joseph
Hi,

Has anyone got a cvh engine they no longer want / need? Mine went bang last
week. Ideally, I'd like to put in something with a bit more get up and go than
the existing 1.6 cvh I currently have, maybe a turbo or a bigger capacity cvh.

Unfortunately, without performing major surgery on the engine frame, I think
cvh is my only option.

Cheers,

Keith

Back to the search for a larger capacity cvh I guess.

Hi Eddie,

Many thanks.

I'm going to have a go this weekend at trying to re-build the original
engine - nothing to loose, even if it just see's me through till the
good weather ends it will be a bonus. If I fail to get it back in one
piece and / or it's buggered completely, I'll get back in touch and try
and arrange to get down to you sometime soon - Your about 300 miles away
from me so it's quite a long journey there and back in the day.

Thanks again,

Cheers,

Hi Tom,

I've resigned myself to the fact that my car is going to be off the road

[Quantum Owners] Front chassis for a 2+2

2013-08-29 Thread Keith Joseph
Hi,

Does anyone know if it's possible to get hold of the front chassis for a
2+2 which is designed to take the Zetec Engine?

I'm changing my 2+2 from a 1.6 CVH to a 2.0 Zetec and thought it might be
easier to just unbolt the existing framework and replace it with the
correctly shaped one, rather than cutting and welding the original.

Has anyone got one lying around they no longer need / want or want to swap
for a CVH frame?

Cheers,

Keith

[Quantum Owners] MTX75 Gearbox into a 2+2

2013-10-10 Thread Keith Joseph
Hi,

Has anyone ever fitted an MTX75 gearbox into a 2+2?

If so, does anyone have any photo's / dimensions etc as to how and where
the chassis needs modifying and how / where the mounts fit / what mounts to
use?

I'm trying to fit a 2.0L Zetec out of a Mk1 Focus into my 2+2, originally
thinking that I just needed to swap the engine, but it wont fit on the
original gearbox, which is a pain. As a result, I've got no reference
points as to where the engine and box need to be mounted onto the Quantum
chassis.

This is turning out to be an even bigger job than I imagined!

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

Keith

[Quantum Owners] Re: MTX75 Gearbox into a 2+2

2013-10-10 Thread Keith Joseph
Hi Jim,

I thought that as well originally, however now I have everything in bits on
my garage floor, I find that the webbing / framework at the bottom of the
Zetec engine does not allow me to get the starter motor into the bell
housing on the original gearbox. Also, on the other side, similar webbing
clashes with the driveshaft.

It is possible to remove the lower part of the engine block but I really
don't want to start splitting the engine up and start working on the
internals - This is one of the reasons I'm swapping the CVH out as I don't
want to re-build it again.

Hence why I'm now confronted with having to put the MTX75 box in.

Any advice?

Cheers,

Keith

If yes then part of the sump webbing needs to be trimmed to get the

[Quantum Owners] 2+2 Selling / Stripping

2015-09-20 Thread Keith Joseph
Dear All,

It is with a heavy heart that I've made the decision to abandon my 2+2.

I built the car back in 1998 from an XR2 and used it for 16 years, covering
only 23500 miles in that time. Then a year or so ago, the head gasket went
and after rebuilding with a new one, it was apparent that something had
been bent within the engine as there was a slight knocking noise.

I took the decision to take out the existing 1.6 CVH and associated
gearbox, and sourced a 2.0L Blacktop Zetec and gearbox from a Ford Focus.
I've made a start in cutting the engine frame in order to fit the new lump
in, but I've come to the conclusion that it's going to be a bigger job than
I had anticipated and I just don't have the time, so I need to get the car
gone to free up my garage space.

I am therefore asking if anyone would be interested in buying either the
complete car, as is, or various parts. The body-shell and associated panels
are all in very good condition, having generally only ever been out on
sunny days and always stored in my garage - The yellow gelcoat is as good
as new and it would be a crying shame to scrap it! I paid over £600 for the
hardtop, which has only ever been used on the car in the garage! There is
obviously loads of bits and pieces I could take off but ideally, if I could
get rid of the whole car in one go, it would be easier.

If anyone is interested in either the car as a whole, or parts etc, please
get in touch and we can discuss in more detail.

Cheers,

Keith

[Quantum Owners] 2+2 parts for sale

2015-09-25 Thread Keith Joseph
I am stripping my yellow 2+2, XR2 based quantum, chassis number Q2-383.

I have a Mk2 hardtop - the one with the smooth black gelcoat finish. It is
lined with grey carpet and has a glass heated rear screen.

It has been stored in my garage all of it's life and has hardly ever been
used on the car.

Hardtop Price: £250

In addition, I will have the complete bonnet, doors, boot lid, all in
excellent condition and in original yellow gelcoat finish plus all of the
mechanicals and interior (XR2 dashboard, recovered door cards and Recaro
seats) - The complete car in other words.

Let me know what you want / need and I'll see if I've got it.

My mobile number is 07948 406 516 and my email address is
ksj.mob...@gmail.com

Cheers,

Keith

[Quantum Owners] 2+2 stripped shell and panels for sale £250

2015-10-18 Thread Keith Joseph
Dear all,

I have completed the stripping of my Quantum 2+2, gelcoat Yellow, chassis
number Q2-383 which I've owned from new and am now looking to pass it onto
someone who can give it a good home.

It will come complete with the doors which I have removed but I will supply
the door hinges / brackets, the boot lid which has the inner lining panel
bonded into it, the complete front bonnet assembly with the headlight flaps
complete with the headlights, and electric motor winder mechanism already
built and in place.

There is also the front frame which has been removed but I have started to
modify this in order to fit a Zetec, but I have not completed the
modifications so it will need work doing to it to finish it off.

The shell and associated body panels are all in very good condition, it's
never been painted or damaged in any way, and has always been stored in a
garage out of the elements.

Please contact me on 07948 406 516 if you would be interested in giving
this another chance to cruise the open roads or even if you just want it as
spare body parts.

Many thanks,

Keith
