[Quantum Owners] brushes for rear wiper motor

2016-02-14 Thread Niall McCracken
Hans, I've recently taken apart a faulty motor to try and repair it (no
success), I'd be happy to send you the brushes if you'll cover postage? They're
not amazed no but I reckon they have a bit of life left. But - as I discovered,
it all gets horrible fiddly once you take the magnetic casing off, would it not
be worth trying to source a replacement motor instead? If I remember rightly I
think the wire from the brushes is soldered in place too.

[Quantum Owners] Anyone use a manual choke? 2+2 question...

2016-04-12 Thread Niall McCracken
Hello!

Just bought a new carb with manual choke, I'm converting from a standard DFT
with electric auto choke which has never worked.

I was wondering where the best place to run the choke cable through the front
would be? Should I be thinking about drilling through the bulkhead and creating
a dedicated hole or is there a sneaky cutout hiding somewhere that I can
utilise? Think I'll probably mount it underneath the heater controls opposite
the fag lighter as there is a little cutout. Although if anyone can suggest
anything better (eg easier!) I'm open to suggestions.

Existing 32DFT Carb will be available for any reasonable offer if anyone is
interested btw.

WOO! Three weeks to Stoneleigh.

[Quantum Owners] Mk2 fiesta dashboard clock problem

2016-04-13 Thread Niall McCracken
Hello there - I'm stuck, again (sorry!)

I've got an xr2 clocks cluster with a rev counter that's dead as a fish, so
I've fitted an aftermarket rev counter and bought a standard mk2 dashboard.
Everything seems to have gone fine except the Dashboard clock - it works fine
when the engine is on, but (as I feared may be the case) stops when you turn
off the engine. I'd be stunned if anyone knew anything - but does anyone have
any ideas? Do I need to run a dedicated feed off the battery? I was hoping
there'd be something that n the loom to help me out. On the bright side the car
interior is now everywhere and unattractive to thieves...

[Quantum Owners] Problem with shiny new carb (possible cause; idiot trying to fit it)

2016-04-16 Thread Niall McCracken
Hello there - we've probably established by now that I'm an idiot with no
mechanical experience

Anyway, managed to rewire my dash and get the clock going today (thanks Jim!)
also discovered the last guy never wired up the dash backlights which may
explain why it was really really dim at night...

Anyway, I was on a roll, so decided to fit my new carb - a 32/34 Dmtr from
webcon. But I have a problem - knowing next to nothing about cars (and not
having an installation guide as promised (thanks webcon), my assumption that
the new carb would have the same fittings as the old was naive /misguided. My
old dft has a fuel pipe that goes into a metallic filter or something and that
screwed into the carb body. Next to that there's another pipe with a brass
fitting. I assumed that was some sort of float overflow or similar because it
seems to come from the petrol tank too.

But the new carb doesn't have any way (that I can see) of plugging both these
pipes in. There's no thread at all for adding the fuel pipe filter attachment
(well there is but its blanked off) but there is the brass tube thing that the
overflow was on before. If I plug the fuel line into this one (I honestly can't
see where else it would go) then I've got no overflow (or whatever it is) pipe
anymore? I did try it this was but the quantum was having none of it - it
almost caught but then just filled the carb with petrol Yippee.

Anyway, as ever, HELP

Photo here kind of explains what I mean I hope!

Re: [Quantum Owners] Problem with shiny new carb (possible cause; idiot trying to fit it)

2016-04-17 Thread Niall McCracken
Jim - can't thank you enough for taking the time to look at it. The kit came
with a t bar with a brass restrictor so I actually tried doing exactly what you
suggested this morning. Still flooding though (quite literally!), the carb
chamber was still filling long after the key was out.

i went to bed last night with a "not going to get to stoneleigh dread" so after
lunch I bit the bullet and took the whole thing off and refitted the old one -
she started first time. But I did break the little brass connecting rod that
goes from the auto choke to the butterflies so I had to blank it off. But it
runs at least. I'll try webcon again tomorrow, I think I need adult supervision!

One thing I did notice was that when I removed the new carb - was that the
spacer gasket was soaked with fuel, both above and below. Could this whole
thing have been caused by me not tightening the new carb down tight enough?

Ps sorry about the video, will be better orientated in future (maybe with a
snazzy post modernist soundtrack and moody panning!)

Thanks again Jim!

2016-05-06 Thread Niall McCracken
James,

Yes had a super time really enjoyed meeting you all. Thanks for thinking about
my carb - I can't seem to get it to idle at all and have been working on it
every night for the last week, there's literally nothing on google about carbs
that I haven't now read! Everything seems to point to a vacuum leak but I'm
dubious as the old carb that came off idled just fine. I'm going to have
another play tomorrow. But, funnily enough, I took the idle jets off today and
gave them a clean just to make sure (they were perfect) and, literally an hour
ago I thought "I wonder if it's worth taking the idle jets of the old carb and
giving them a go". Spooky! Either way, strongly tempted to set fire to it and
just get an Audi A3 on lease (joke!)

Thanks for the offer that's very kind. But yes runs like a dream under load
it's just on idle (or not being on idle!) that's the prob. Made some progress
this morning though, bought some carb cleaner and started playing around -
looks like there is a vacuum leak. It's either somewhere around the base plate
under where the throttle mechanism goes into the body - or in the throttle
mechanism itself. Can't be sure and now the car is overheating so I'll go back
out in an hour and have another play!

Ha yes thanks - tried out it yesterday to be on the safe side works fine! I
took new carb off and refitted the old one using the the new base plate and
it's doing the same thing so think it may be the sealing around the base -
ordered some more base plates and thin gaskets this afternoon hope that's it.
Worked out I've spent over 50 hours on this so far. Why did I buy an old car
again???

Thanks a million guys, I'll keep you posted!

[Quantum Owners] Need a manifold....

2016-05-22 Thread Niall McCracken
Hello there, does anyone know where or how, or who I have to kill, to get hold
of an intake manifold for a standard 1.6 xr2 CVH (might have solved my new carb
problem btw) as mine seems to be slightly warped where the carb bolts on and I
can't find one anywhere.

I can get one that takes twin 45s but I'm not sure my wife would be super
pleased with that purchase (and then the necessary twin 45s purchase to go with
it) and I honestly don't think my quantum is big enough to live in
(cause-effect).

Open to any other low cost solutions too! In a jolly side note seem to have
alienated all customer relations with the lovely chaps at Webcon for ever. Note
to self; before going on tyrannical bender of phone and email abuse, check the
obvious.

[Quantum Owners] All the H4 seals

2019-01-04 Thread Niall McCracken
Hello there, I think I need to replace just about every single seal on my H4
around the doors and windows due to age etc. Do the originals all come from a
mkiii fiesta? Is there any sort of collated list of what goes where? Mine is a
bit crumbly and I’m not sure how to go about replacing and sealing it due to
the perished condition of most of what’s left.
Thankyou Niall

[Quantum Owners] Re: Young driver interested in kit cars

2019-01-27 Thread Niall McCracken

>
> Hi Martin
>

I'm probably wading in here a bit late... I had a 2+2 for a while and have
just bought a H4.

I was desperate to get my hands on any sort of classic car with a soft top
and honestly I don't think there is anything out there that even comes
close to touching a quantum in terms of value for money, nothing. You can
get a sort of ok Mini or Morris Minor for about 4k, a good MK1 mx5 will
cost you at least 3k these days, its a no brainer in my opinion.
The biggest plus is also the biggest negative - that they're hand built. So
everyone is different and each have their own quirks, but the plus side is
that they are generally very easy to work on. If it helps - my experience
is as follows:
1) First Quantum was a Yellow 2+2 based on a 1984 XR2. Paid £2100, from
what I now know is a dodgy dodgy car salesman. Looked immaculate, but
wasnt. Ended up rewiring, replacing carb, manifold, rear suspension,
completely replacing pop up headlights, new dashboard, new choke, new tie
rods and a rack replacement. All of these I did with no experience using a
Haynes manual and google. But the biggest challenge was indeed finding
parts. I did find you can get creative and substitute various bits and
pieces but ended up paying over £1800 to get it up to scratch.
2) Second was a H4 bought about 6 weeks ago. Paid £1200. Mechanically sound
but needs lots of adjusting and updating including a complete interior
replacement. But drives fine, although needs new rear shocks. Leaks like a
sieve. But a unique targa convertible that'll hit 60 in under 10 seconds
for £1200 and looks totally unique??! fahgeddabout it!!

I guess the point is that no two are the same - but they're quite
straightforward to work on and I've found the forum absolutely invaluable
for support. Within a week of joining somebody hand drew a complete wiring
diagram for the headlights and emailed it over to me. And they are nearly
always cheap to repair; my steering rack for the 2+2 was something like £18
new! And the dashboard was about £20 from ebay. Its all part of the fun!
People have recently really switched on to classic fords and you'd be
surprised how many parts there are out there.

[Quantum Owners] Zetec 1.6 (90) Runs for 10 seconds then dies

2019-03-09 Thread Niall McCracken
Hello all

I've posted this over on proboards too so apologies if you drift between
both. I'm currently replacing the entire interior on my H4 which is turning
into a bit of an epic, I've got the entire interior out and clean, and new
carpet sitting in the living room waiting to go in. But I've now got a
bigger issue...

Having finished cleaning the inside of my car, I thought I'd better start
it and let it run for 15 mins as it had been sitting for about three weeks.

It starts fine, idles happily for about 10 seconds, then coughs and dies.
And it does this repeatedly; It has petrol in it and is turning over and
catching fine with no lights on the dashboard. I can hear the fuel pump
priming (it does sound quite whiny but I think that is probably because
I've stripped the interior so it sounds a bit louder) and then it's
stopping after about 2 secs so that seems fine.

It runs smooth - and I can't seem to "rev through" the stall either, makes
zero difference.

I've not looked under the bonnet (couldn't face it haha). Leads and plugs
are reasonably new so unlikely to be anything quite so obvious; could be
fuel filter I guess, or fuel relay. Or oxygen or airflow sensor, or some
idle control problem. BUT - the main reason I'm asking is that I'm
wondering whether me stripping the interior may have done something to
cause such an issue? Only having played with carb engine's I'm a bit adrift
with ECU controlled Zetec's.

Is there anyone out there who has built a H4 from scratch that could think
of anything that I could have done by removing the interior that could have
caused it? I'm thinking cables and the such primarily. Anything run front
to back that's reasonably vital for example?

Many thanks all.

Niall

Thanks - I checked again it does actually have a small red dot. I am
beginning to wonder whether I've knocked something out now I think about

lights from the b-pillar so goodness knows what else I've inadvertently
unplugged!

Will have another look in the morning.

[Quantum Owners] Re: Zetec 1.6 (90) Runs for 10 seconds then dies

2019-03-10 Thread Niall McCracken
Solved - was a bad earth from fuel relay, was going through rear bulkhead
and when I rebolted it after painting I snapped the solder to the the metal
ring, looked intact from outside until I pulled on it and the wire came out
of the holder.

Thanks anyway Jim, good to know about PATS either way!

[Quantum Owners] Re: Charging 2+2 query

2019-03-14 Thread Niall McCracken
Hello there, not sure how relevant this is but I had the exact same problem
on my Lada Samara (don't laugh) a long time ago, it happened after the
alternator was replaced. In the end it was actually the pully wheel on the
alternator arm that was the problem - the new alternator had one that was
significantly bigger than the old one and that's what was causing the
overcharge (spindle turning too quickly). But that's just my experience,
good luck with the refit.

[Quantum Owners] Stoneleigh Question...

2019-04-18 Thread Niall McCracken
Hello there

I’ve recently bought a H4 (I’m repairing the interior and mostly have it back
together sort of ) I was thinking about coming down to Stoneleigh. My son and I
came down a couple of years ago and came second in the quiz (ahh.. if only I
knew Britney Spears birthday I could have snatched victory haha).
I was wondering if people were camping or if there was anywhere we could tent
up, or if we’d be welcome to set up a tent or if people are mostly staying for
the day or overnight too.
Also my quantum isn’t really in showroom quality at the mo, is there likely to
be anywhere we can put her where she want draw too much attention or is there
more general parking around the site (don’t want to let the side down!).

Thanks Niall

[Quantum Owners] Re: H4 Sealing rear windscreen

2019-04-30 Thread Niall McCracken
Hmmm

That's really not going to work for me... When I got it the whole back end
of the car from the b pillar back was absolutely covered in rust, the rear
set belt harness points had to be welded and the metal cross struts were
destroyed too. Sitting water had got in and destroyed the rear seats too.
The drain holes were all clear too - with the amount of work I've done I'm
not sure I'm happy with letting any water in at all...

I'd also looked at creating a channel for drainage too but the profile as
the fibreglass slopes down to meet the seat stays is so shallow that I'm
not sure how it would work.

Lots of thinking to do

Thanks all

Re: [Quantum Owners] Stoneleigh Thanks

2019-05-09 Thread Niall McCracken
Hi Dave

'tis true. Frustratingly I knew all of that already, even the height of the
Karman line!

What I didn't factor in, was my poor listening skills. I heard the standard
pub quiz question "first animal to orbit the earth" not the* actual*
question which was "first mammal in space".

Genuinely my initial response to hearing the correct question was "well
that was fruit flies", which would still have been wrong!

Just a bit of fun - I was totally wrong but I got plenty of others wrong
too and was nowhere near the top of the leader board anyway.

There is no disagreement - just a bit of joking around!

It's things like this that explain why my Quantum repairs seem to take 10
times longer than everyone elses!...

[Quantum Owners] Adrian Flux...

2019-06-20 Thread Niall McCracken
I have had an extremely unsavoury exchange with Adrian Flux today regarding
cancelling my Quantum Insurance.

I'm trying to cancel 6 months through a policy and I'm paying for it
monthly. They've told me that the only way I can cancel is by paying the
entire remaining 6 months of the policy upfront. I argued that if they
aren't providing a service they can't possibly charge for it. They reason
this is because the policy and the payment for the policy are completely
unconnected. The "credit agreement" is unconnected to the policy and simply
has to be paid no matter what irrespective of what happens to the actual
policy. This seems fairly insane to me. The extremely - extremely rude and
aggressive person at Adrian Flux told me that it was explained when I took
the policy out that I wasn't entitled to any refund; I said I didn't want
any refund I just wanted to cancel the policy. She said this actually meant
a refund from the total amount of credit I had taken out irrespective of
what happens.
She then, when not shouting over me tried to explain my consumer rights and
advised "strongly" against complaining to the FSA or Ombudsman as it would
be a "waste of time". Effectively this means I can't cancel the insurance
on my Quantum, leaving it impossible for anyone else to insure it.
I may be being a bit naïve here but I have never, ever, heard of a credit
agreement for insurance operating in this way. Is it just me or does that
sound completely bonkers?

[Quantum Owners] Re: Adrian Flux...

2019-06-21 Thread Niall McCracken
Hi all

Thanks for all the comments - just to clarify I've had to scrap the quantum
following it's MOT. I've got no intention of insuring it twice.

I know my way around policy documents and it is indeed in the terms of the
credit agreement on page 927 paragraph 97 subsection 18 (or whatever!), I
was just wondering whether this is yet another example of Adrian Flux
ripping people off and providing a poor service or whether or not I'd been
misinformed at point of sale. It seems like a lovely mix of both.

However, we're talking a grand total of £61 so it's not the end of the
world, it just seems like a fairly nefarious tactic to me, and certainly
not one I've ever experienced before (and I've had lots of cars over the
years)

Niall
