Hi,

The early square top carb fitted to the XR2 is the same as the XR3 and
either of theses manifolds is suitable for the DMTR/DMTL range of

The above photo is of an early type carb and as far as I am aware they
all had electric chokes.

2011-12-23 Thread Steve Brabazon
Hi,

The saloon has a slightly wider track than the Fiesta Mk2 and it could
be that some makes of CV joints are able to tolerate this better than
others. I have standard XR2 shafts on my car.

An old build manual does mention Mk1 Fiesta drive shaft/shafts, as
being too short.

Hi Jin

As far as I am aware there is no difference in the external
measurements of a XR2 and a standard drum (the road wheels will be in
the same place). The difference is internally to allow for the wider
shoe and I think that was just a case of taking a radius off a corner.

Also as far as I am aware all Mk2 axles are the same.

Hi,

Our hood, my daughters really is not on the car yet as we decided to
see the winter through on the old one,

We have trial fitted the hood by placing it over the frame and it
looks like everything will line up as it should.

By the metal side supports if you mean the reinforcement just behind
the doors, then yes it does. The hood also comes with the press-studs
which you will need to put on yourself. If you don't have the tool to
turn them over he also sells them.

The two things you don't get are the header-rail and fittings and on
our old hood there are two Tenax Fasteners which we intend to swap
over.

Quality wise I don't think he is any better or any worse than anybody
else. I found him to be a very helpful person replying to my emails

[Quantum Owners] Re: Headlining replacement

2010-11-08 Thread Steve Brabazon
Hi Mark,
The headlining is not easy; it took me 3 goes before I was happy.

The most important thing I found was the type of material being used.
At one point old Quantum could supply a material that was very similar
to the carpet people use to trim out the backs of vans and
loudspeakers, it was however thinner. I used contact spray adhesive.

The following is how I did it
1. Draw a centre line front to back on the inside of the roof and on
the back of the headlining.
2. The first bit to attach is along the centre lines between the
sunroof and the rear window.
3. Now work from the centre line until the back half of the car is
done. The hardest part is getting the material to stretch around the
side window returns.
4. After completing the back, it’s a case of moving forwards, where
the tricky part is around the beam at the top of the windscreen.

Recent photographs of my headlining can be found at
http://brabazon.org/Quantum.aspx
. It’s now been on for 20 years.

Good luck,
Steve

[Quantum Owners] Re: Newbie Quantum owner advice please

2010-08-18 Thread Steve Brabazon
Hi,

The front anti roll bar mounts have to be capable of withstanding all
the acceleration and most of the braking forces of a 1250Kg car while
the front wheels are hitting potholes etc. If I felt that they were
unable to support the static corner weight of the car, I would most
certainly not be driving the car.

The front mounting of the tow-bar has very little if any fore/aft
forces on it, it is there to stop the tow-bar from twisting around its
rear mountings when up/down forces are applied to the tow hitch, it is
therefore mounted to a part of the car that is strong in the up/down
direction. Rusted tow-bars can however be a problem! Again if the tow-
bar or mounting were unable to support the light rear of the Quantum I
would have concerns about using the tow-bar to tow in the first place.

If you feel happier jacking the car from under the sills then this
what Quantum said
“Jacking points = anywhere along the sill. Spread the load with a
150mm square piece of wood (not chipboard) 20mm thick. A scissor jack
is best.”

I could always ask my daughter who is a mechanical engineer for her
thoughts on the matter.

[Quantum Owners] Re: Newbie Quantum owner advice please

2010-08-17 Thread Steve Brabazon
Hi John,

Welcome to Quantum ownership.

I think Quantum used to say the car could be jacked up anywhere along
the sill with a piece of wood between the jack and the car. I was
never very happy with this and have always jacked my car up, at the
front under the anti roll bar mounts and at the back under the beam or
the front of the tow-bar.

The water is most likely coming in at the windows as the bonding has a
habit of becoming unstuck.

Regard,
Steve

[Quantum Owners] Re: 2+2 Hoods

2010-04-23 Thread Steve Brabazon
Hi

He charges roughly
£300 delivered for a Everflex Vinyl hood.
£400 delivered for a Mohair hood
I think these prices include VAT but that needs to be checked.

He charges around £200 for a Spitfire Everflex Vinyl hood as a
comparison.

I believe Everflex Vinyl is superior to standard hood vinyl.

I too would like to get one for the price of a MGB hood but I think
that is one of the problems of having a low volume car, at least we
save money on not having to replace rusted metalwork

[Quantum Owners] Re: track control arms and anti roll bar

2010-01-15 Thread Steve Brabazon
Hi,

The spec for the Mk2 saloon says the anti-roll bar comes from a Mk4
Escort (24mm dia as fitted to the 1600, XR3, XR3i).

The lesser cars are I believe fitted with a 22mm bar which is what I
have on my car. I also believe both bars use the same TCA but stand to
be corrected.

[Quantum Owners] Re: Saloon Towbar

2009-09-29 Thread Steve Brabazon

Hi James,

I paid £600 for the paint job which I know I won't get back if I were
to sell the car, however I built the car myself 15 odd years ago and
intend to keep it as my daily driver for another 15. It was a case of
either getting it painted or buying a new car as it was becoming a bit
of an embarrassment to use.

I repaired the very small amount of bodywork that needed fixing,
Removed the glass (they needed re-bonding anyway), sunroof, doors,
boot lid, nose cone, in fact everything that was bolted to the
exterior of the car and then handed it over to be sanded and painted
while I went away on holiday.

The painting was done by a small garage/paint shop in Rowlands Gill,
Co. Durham by a person who paints lots of classic cars (If anybody
would like his phone number I will pass it on).

[Quantum Owners] Re: Saloon Towbar

2009-09-27 Thread Steve Brabazon

Hi Russell,

The towbar is from a Mk 2 Fiesta and if you look at this link:

http://i36.tinypic.com/23sug3t.jpg

you will be able to see what needs to be welded onto it

The new part is a square tube with about the same external dimensions
as the towbar. A bolt goes through the bit that extends upwards and
bolts horizontally into the boot.

[Quantum Owners] Re: Window Bonding Adhesive

2009-08-02 Thread Steve Brabazon

Hi Jim,

Thanks for the reply.

Can you remember where you got your adhesive from?

I think my glass give way because of the air pressure inside the car
when the door is closed. The air can not get out fast enough and the
windows are pushed outwards slightly, weaking the hold the adhesive
has on the glass each time until it gives way.

I know I was very careful when I first fitted the glass and did
everything as per the Quantum manual, using acetone or thinners to
clean the glass.
