Re: [Quantum Owners] Mot

2019-03-12 Thread Darren Siepka
Yes I was thinking of not just never having a MOT but to perhaps get one
every two or three years.
My Q has just gone vhi but was built in 95, so missed the 30.
I do wonder if once the declaration is done then it won't be possible to go
back in 6 years and say hey now I don't want to MOT anymore ?

Re: [Quantum Owners] Mot

2019-03-12 Thread Susan and Martin Scott
Pity I missed the exemption cutoff by 6 years else this would be it's one and
only test needed :-(

Maybe, maybe not? It's a bit of a grey area because the vehicle must have "no
major modification" and then there's the caveat "inthe last 30 years". Reading
between the lines and other experience from users of 'Mad about Kitcars' it
appears that if the vehicle's VED class is 'Vehicle of Historic Interest'
then (as long as there have been no major changes in 30 years) it may be
possible to get MOT exemption. My Rickman Space Ranger is VHI, but I don't know
when it was converted from Ford Escort to the Rickman kit. As the Space ranger
was a later model (I think earliest 1991) then I may try this exercise of MOT
exemption in 2021.
My intention isn't to avoid MOT, but to get a bit of flexibility eg take it
for MOT a little later (without a possible Police fine), or indeed once every 2
years as I only do about 4k per year. The car has to still be roadworthy of
course.

This burnt wiring  comment by the MOT man has me wondering.

Last year after a 40 mile run , I parked up but when I got back to the car and
tried to start, there was the smell of burning wiring. Having got towed home ,
I found that the wiring under the rear seat squab which goes to the fuel tank
sender was all melted together. That is directly over the exhaust!  I never
found a cause and only found this issue by accident.

May be worth a check under the seat squab. Once lit fibreglass burns quickly!

[Quantum Owners] MOT failure UPDATE

2018-05-15 Thread 'robert greig' via Quantum Owners Group

It looks like I'm not going to be able to take the Xtreme to France!

Having had the wire for the lamda sensor replaced its back to the MOT.At the
MOT retest, in failed on the emissions  " with black smoke visible when it was
reved."
The MOT chap said it's either the CAT or the ECU!Given the lamda wire shorted/
melted I fear its the ECU.A spare Lamda was tried.
Northampton Motorsport phone is engaged.
I can't see any way I can find anyone to sort this in the next seven days.
So It looks like I will be in the Fiesta not the Xtreme for the France trip.

" Having vented my stress in writing a e-mail and then delitting it, the above
is written with a clearer head."
Why does this always happen to me! .O' well that life.
Robert Greig

RE: [Quantum Owners] Mot failed

2018-05-13 Thread Ken Needham
This burnt wiring comment by the MOT man has me wondering.
Last year after a 40 mile run , I parked up but when I got back to the car and
tried to start, there was the smell of burning wiring. Having got towed home ,
I found that the wiring under the rear seat squab which goes to the fuel tank
sender was all melted together. That is directly over the exhaust! I never
found a cause and only found this issue by accident.
May be worth a check under the seat squab. Once lit fibreglass burns quickly!

The favourite for mice seems to be ignition leads but they can have a nibble
on any rubber or plastic parts.
I can’t imagine them being able to chew through GRP though, that blunts
hardened drills quickly enough, i don’t think teeth would last long.

Had the mot booked for today, it didn’t fail but it didn’t pass either. It
didn’t get that far.
Last night the stupid plastic coolant hose Y connector threw its toys out of
the pram and snapped!
I got home on a recovery truck ( under insurance ) with all the food shopping
in the boot. Grr
I’ve made up a temporary one from household copper piping fittings, which seems
to be working, until the new one arrives.
Of course, I didn’t have all the bits I needed did I? Oh no!! That would be Too
easy.
I had to get on the old push bike for the first time in a year to get them. 45
mins on dull roads.I ache now.
Still, it’s all part of the fun of owning a kit carI’ve ordered
a spare as well.
Mot rebooked for next week.

RE: [Quantum Owners] MOT Update

2012-09-08 Thread Ken Needham

Well Martin, that's interesting. When my tester showed me his system, the only
difference to your description was that the field did not come up blank, it
showed what was on the previous certificate - Opel?!
The drop down was as you described but the system would not allow him to
manually overwrite, he could only choose from the list.

I understand from a mate that recently set up a MOT centre that the hydraulic
shaker plates enable the MOT to be done by a single person. Without the plates
the DVLA require two people to be deployed for the test.
Glad it passed

Went for MOT test today, and when the registration
number was entered, no make was given in the entry box, the tester, however,
had
a list he could select from (Quantum not included, although an oddity beginning
with Q- something like Quiqui??? maybe chinese) or he said he could enter what
he liked. He entered Quantum as on the V5, and it was accepted. Strangely the
computer automatically offered saloon as the body style - same as V5. The
tester
also put the model (again offered as blank) name as saloon, which is not on the
V5, but with my agreement. It will be interesting to see whether the make and
model appear next year when the registration number is entered.
Something I'd not seen at previous testing stations
- the 4 post ramp had 'shaker plates' which when activated by the tester
pressing a button, burst into life, shaking the front wheels from side to side,
movinng up and down and turning the steering etc, to highlight any ball joint
or
other play. It looked a good system, and liable to certainly do as intended!

Oh, and it passed! The tester and his colleague
were interested in the way QSC had styled the car with the original fiesta
glass, and the astra GTE glass with the fiesta windscreen with more
rake.
Martin.

[Quantum Owners] MOT Time

My Saloon is now due it's first MOT - so what should it show on the MOT
certificate?
I'm aware that kit cars can be shown as all sorts of the MOT (though should be
correct on the V5).
My previous Rickman Ranger was described as Ford Kit Car on the MOT, and could
not be changed, my present Rickman Space Ranger is Rickman/Ford on the MOT.
What do other members have on the MOT??
I'll take along the V5C, so hopefully there will be no problem, but it seems
there is only one chance to get it right, and it can't be subsequently changed
(unless I've been misinformed)

I have 2 Saloons in the family.
The V5s state Ford Based Quantum on one Saloon and Quantum on another Saloon

The previous MOTs have stated Quantum.

Both have gone through their MOT recently with different Garages. They haven't
Questioned either.

However, both wanted the V5 before they would proceed which I found strange. I
didn't offer the Old MOT as they had expired.

Also make sure they do the correct / appropriate Emissions Check.

RE: [Quantum Owners] MOT Time

2012-09-05 Thread Ken Needham

My MOTs showed Quantum until a couple of years ago. I didn't notice at first
but when I did I called the DVLA who said that I could get it changed next time
I took it for an MOT.
I took it up with my MOT guy who showed me that the newsystem does not allow
one to change the manufacturer other than from a prescibed list of main
names.Obviously Quantum is not on the list.
I called the DVLA again, but this time I did find someone who understood. The
told me to get the MOT place to FAX a copy of the MOT and the V5 to a number
they gave me as the change can only be done by the DVLA. Next time the make
will automatically come up as expected and will be fine so long as no one tries
to change it which can be done by selecting from the prescribed list!
I did this and the garage faxed as requested with a covering letter.
That was in March, i've heard nothing since. Maybe next timeI get an MOT it
will read correctlty again.

regards
Ken

What do other members have on the

I'll take along the V5C, so hopefully there will

Re: [Quantum Owners] MOT Time

2012-09-05 Thread Susan and Martin Scott
Thanks Ken - That's weird, I'd expect the car's identity to come up as Quantum
when the registration number is typed into the computer, but the workings of
DVLA baffle me (and many others). After all the months they took to register my
saloon, they still sent the V5 incorrectly showing it as a 2 seater. When I
took the V5 into Norwich DVLA they said I'd clearly given incorrect information
when I applied.I just kept quiet for once, and asked them to send off the
form, which duly arrived corrected a couple of weeks later! Martin

My MOTs showed Quantum until a couple of years ago. I didn't notice at first
but when I did I called the DVLA who said that I could get it changed next time
I took it for an MOT.
I took it up with my MOT guy who showed me that the newsystem does not
allow one to change the manufacturer other than from a prescibed list of main
names.Obviously Quantum is not on the list.
Maybe next timeI get an MOT it
will read correctlty again.

  regards
  Ken

Either As it's first (ie 3 yrs old) MOT I wanted it to be 'correct'.
strangely they had never queried the previous rickman, although the MOT 'name'
didn't match the V5, I know it was correctly registered as I had all the
paperwork for registration, old MOT's etc.
On the V5 my saloon is shown as make Quantum, there is nothing in the model,
and body style is Saloon, so I expect to just get Quantum shown on the MOT. I'd
have thought when the tester put the reg no in the computer that it would come
up with the correct description, but I'll find out on Friday.
  Thanks all for the help,
  Martin.

My Saloon is now due it's first MOT - so what should it show on the MOT
certificate?
I'm aware that kit cars can be shown as all sorts of the MOT (though should
be correct on the V5).
My previous Rickman Ranger was described as Ford Kit Car on the MOT, and

[Quantum Owners] MOT Reg Changes

2012-02-22 Thread MattWilson(Q2-412)
As we're all getting quite enthusiastic about legal issues and MOT
regs etc
Someone at work forwarded the below link to me last week:

http://uk.autoblog.com/2012/01/04/changes-to-mot-rules-in-2012-are-you-ready/

I was wondering how some of this might affect our Quantum's at MOT
time. (Not sure how much of the article is the usual scare-
mongering).

Some highlights I thought may casue a few issues:
1. Missing, or split/damaged dust covers on steering and suspension
ball-joints will result in failure if they will allow dirt to enter
the joint. maybe that's always been the case and is good practice to
sort ASAP anyway but a pain if time is short in the run-up to your
MOT.

2. They've essentially closed the door on after-market HID (GOOD!).
So if you've got them, you may have trouble now.

3. Fail for insufficiently supported or protected wires.

4. Driver's seat must go back and forward. So presumably if you've
got a fixed type bucket seat, that could be a problem.

Any thoughts?
Matt

Re: [Quantum Owners] MOT Reg Changes

2012-02-22 Thread Mark Miles
I have had an MOT fail previously for a split rubber on a steering balljoint so
I suspect that this is not a change. The HID thing is good news, around here we
have a lot of clios etc  with aftermarket HID and they are dazzling at best.
The insufficiently supported/protected wires is a direct concern for me. The
wiring on my car is in a dreadful state. I think this will bring forward my
project to update the electrical systems on the car. MOT in June so something
of a priority I think. I am not sure of the benefit of a drivers seat that
moves I am the only person that drives my car and the seat hasn't been
moved since I bought the car nearly three years ago.

RE: [Quantum Owners] MOT Reg Changes

2012-02-22 Thread Hamish Freeman
I am pleased to say that my H4 passed with only a warning on handbrake
adjustment which considering that I just put it in this year is OK. Looking
at the list suggested below, I would be fairly unhappy if any of the things
on the list were not within the requirements. One point was interesting as
I do believe the professionally fitted and wired towing hitch on Trish's
car has two wires crossed as it refused to run a standard trailer board! My
H4 trailer socket is OK.

There are a host of other things that have crept in but are well worth it.
The first MOT on my Beauford identified that the rear half shaft nuts were
not torqued up to the correct figure to the extent that a wheel might have
fallen off in due course - this is something I had no cause to undo during
the build so was as is at manufacture. I considered the money spent was
more than worth it for safety, particularly as our local garage is reliable,
technically highly competent (they race minis) and only fails cars if there
are things which could be dangerous, which is what the test is all about.

My experience of looking after your own cars is that being too close leads
to familiarity and sometimes to oversight thus the MOT is a welcome check -
particularly when it finds things wrong with a car still under guarantee!

Re: [Quantum Owners] MOT failed - 75% less braking power right rear

2010-08-06 Thread Hamish Freeman
Another thing that could have been overlooked is that the shims at the fulcrum
end of the linings may have fallen out! This will render the brakes
ineffective as you can end up with only a line contact at the end of the lining
nearest the cylinder.

To get my rear brakes to work effectively, I increased the shim size until the
brakes were bedding evenly all round and it was a big change, like from 0.5 mm
up to 3.5 mm but the change in braking was impressive with no lost motion.

The original message does say they were new shoes.

Re: [Quantum Owners] MOT and IVA

2010-05-17 Thread Russell Willcox
I was told the IVA was a test to check for construction of use not road
worthiness, hence the need for an Mot. It is all very confusing. You
would think there would be one standard never mind is it raining or
sunny, what colour socks am I wearing :-) Should I insure my car or
not. Please ingnore that last statement of course we should, but you get
the idea.

Logic prevailed and it does appear the IVA is considered sufficient,
despite what is written on the DVLA download on first registration.
Beware! - Some of these downloads are at least a year out of date as
they still refer to SVA.

You have to apply for a Registration pack from DVLA and this takes
about a week to arrive then make an appointment to take the car along
to the DVLA office to have the chassis number and engine number
checked and fill in the appropriate forms - discuss with your DVLA
person as I filled in the one that refers to kit cars in its
instructions but the Brighton office wanted the other one that refers
to altered cars. The V5C came back with the vehicle registered as
having two wheels despite all the othe information. I sent it back
and am still waiting for an update.

Re: [Quantum Owners] MOT and IVA

2010-05-17 Thread Susan and Martin Scott
My saloon was SVA'd, and I sent all the documentation to the DVLA. They took a
long while to send back my driving licence, receipts etc - when they did they
just sent them back with a letter saying we enclose the insurance 30 day cover
note. I telephoned them, as they hadn't included the authority to obtain the
number plates (or indeed the registration mark). True to form, they then said
'we need another cover note as your old one is about to expire' n.b. it hadn't
expired. and if they hadn't taken so long, and they could have at least
asked me before I phoned.. I bit my tongue and contacted the insurers. DVLA
sent the V5C with the saloon registered as a 2 seater! Why are DVLA so
unpopular? In contrast the VOSA staff who did the SVA were very professional.

[Quantum Owners] MOT Emissions testing

2009-07-29 Thread John Woodward

My Saloon was first registered in 1997 is fitted with a CVH engine,
the tester insisted that it wa tested as a '97 car (with Cat.) would
not accept my protest that the engine was older would therefore not
meet the emmision standard he was testing it to, so it failed the
Emissions test one other fault. When I check the online MOT testers
manual it just states it should be tested according to the age of the
engine, ( the flowchart is not shown online). But when I check back
before current manual all Kit cars built before SVA ( which mine is)
are considered to be used before 1 August 1975, which is just a visual
smoke test.
Can anyone help clarify if this still applies before I go back for a
retest.
