Glad to see the picture worked for some. It didn't appear on the post
or my e-mail.
Bob, thanks for putting the picture up, hopefully it'll bring a few
smiles.

As for removing the pulley, I've modified my lower cambelt cover, the
bit with the timing marks on it, so that I can remove that without
taking the pulley off. With the cover out of the way the cambelt can
be edged out past the pulley. The fanbelt still has to be removed
though.
The modification basically involves cutting the cover from top to
bottom with a bit of a zig-zag. One bolt holds each half in place when
the cover is fitted.
It's still fiddly to get the cover past the water pump sprocket but it
beats lowering the engine.

In addition to changing the gasket and cambelt, I've also decided to
replace the camshaft, I know it's worn because I measured it a couple
of years ago and it was pretty much at its limit then. So now I have
head gasket, cambelt, camshaft, hydraulic lifters and valve stem oil
seals to do, the extras come in the kits so they're going to be used.
I decided to avoid E-bay for these and have ordered the lot from my
local Exhausts Unlimited as I use them quite a bit. The total is just
a smidge under £200 with the VAT and, hopefully, it'll be good for
another 180,000 miles!

I found i didn't need to lower the engine to get the crank pulley off on the
2+2.
As suitably wedge shaped piece of wood can be pushed into the top engine
mounting to push the engine across just enough to get the crank pulley off.

Thanks for the info guys.

I've checked the compression with my shiny new compression tester and
found that No's 3 4 cylinders have no compression, didn't even
register on the scale!
So, tomorrow I'll take the head off and see how big the job is.
It's the good lady wife's birthday today and my eldest has come home
from Uni for the weekend with a broken laptop, so working on the car
would probably not my wisest choice today.

Right I'm off to E-Bay to get a gasket set, I'll update again when I
see what state the head is in. Meanwhile anyone know where I can get a
replacement head if I need it?
