[Quantum Owners] Saloon Exhaust

2014-04-08 Thread Susan and Martin Scott
Got a burble from the 5 year -old exhaust (OE Ford one) which has split on 2nd
bend in front of box, so rang the exhaust place to be told
"discontinued/unobtainable"
This local exhaust place unfortunately can't be bothered with any 'challenge' -
there was a time when you could take a car into a local exhaust place who would
say "discontinued" but then have a look through their parts to find one similar
which they could adapt. Ok, the back-pressure may not be spot on, but at least
it's better than a holed exhaust.
Anyway, the local factors can get one for £51 inc Vat, which is the whole
system from 'feet to back' which seems about right on price - I'll find out
when I compare it to the one on the car.
Only issue is the cut/shut I made in the original to make it a good fit..
so my choice once the original is off is whether to do a local repair, or
cut/shut the new one and put that on.
I gave up trying the get a stainless one as they all seem to be 'performance'
(noisy!) ones. What have others found? maybe worth getting a spare whilst still
available?
Martin

[Quantum Owners] Saloon Exhaust

2014-04-10 Thread Susan and Martin Scott
Update.. It wasn't too exhausting (pun intended) getting the old one
off - Copper grease and copper coated nuts do seem effective as it's been on 5
years.
The new one is labeled Euroflo. Put the new one alongside the old and
interestingly it was a similar shape (I had welded the old genuine Ford one to
give it clearance).
So without any alterations I put the new one in place for a trial, to find it
was a good fit. So was the Ford one an incorrect shape? I recall a Which Kit
Quantum Saloon build where Gerry Hawkridge (of Hawk Cars) had to put a bend in
the pipe to get a good fit ..
Apart from the better fit, the only difference is that the silencer box is
about 10% smaller, and it does sound a bit louder unfortunately, however this
may improve once it's 'sooted up' a little.

Maybe the aftermarket are making them to fit Quantums ??

Re: [Quantum Owners] Saloon Exhaust

2014-04-08 Thread Steve Kodź
Martin,
Wouldn't it be worth having a custom exhaust built for the car? Yes, a
stainless system like this will be expensive to fit, but work out to be
great value in the long run. Plus having something custom built will allow
you to tailor the sound to suit.

Re: [Quantum Owners] Saloon Exhaust

2014-04-08 Thread Susan and Martin Scott
Yes, I will consider this if I can be sure the company can do it properly.
My recent experience was 3 years ago when the Rickman needed a new piece of
pipe - I went to a recommended place in Norwich who clearly wanted to
maximise his margins. "You'll need a new silencer as well,.. if it's too
noisy we can just add another back pressure doesn't matter". He did a
very good job of the pipe he put an accurate double bend in, and welded a
hanger on. The work was first class, but he was clearly used to the
go-faster/noisier customers he was aiming the product at.
I want to know the system will be correctly matched and low volume before I
commit, otherwise I'm happy to go with a mild steel system because although
it will perish in time, it's likely to be low noise.

Thanks Gary - Our nearest branch is Ipswich so not too bad (1.5 hrs). I
could ask them for a quote based on standard XR2, with 'an additional tweek'
and see what they come up with - If favourable then if I patch the old one I
could drive to them and get the new made/fitted.

Mine was around that a few years back. The bit that affects the price the most

I don't do much mileage these days but I'm pleased with the system and it's
