There is so much more that one would need to do to protect privacy.

Either you want privacy and do everything within your power, or else you don't.

User Agent, doesn't mean much these days, they can still query the browser
directly, unless you change all that information too.
Tracking.. not everyone obeys the "do not track me" settings.

I have one guest for this forum. I have one guest for another thing, and so on.

I have multiple NetVMs and multiple ProxyVMs.

I run anywhere between 5 and 25 guests at any one time.
I run Debian, Slackware, CentOS, Windows 3.11,95,98,2000,xp,7,8,10 (32 and 64
bit versions of available). I run OSX, ESXi, PFSense, Android 4, 5, 6, 7, Qubes
1,2,3, XEN, PASOS, COFFEE, OS/2, Also many many tools that I run for attaching
external HDDs and running tools on them.

I keep privacy between them, but I also try to keep my privacy online by
running VPNs and TOR and VPN through TOR. All for different tasks and accesses
and security requirements.

[qubes-users] How to recover VMs copied before reinstall?

2017-09-25 Thread Ron Hunter-Duvar
Hi,

My first Qubes install ended up unbootable, and I didn't have a recent enough
backup of my VMs. So I booted from a Ubuntu live cd, mounted the partitions,
and copied everything off to a backup drive and did a clean reinstall.

Now I've copied my appvms back to /var/lib/qubes/appvms/, but they don't show
up in the VM Manager.

Can anyone tell me how to get these appvms useable again?

Thanks,
Ron

thanks, you saved me the cost of one. my lemur7(system76) has the same

I will try that. This is a different behaviour however as it is not single VMs
that freezes, it literally is everything. Leaving Xorg and going to a console
doesn't work, nothing I do has any effect. I am not sure if magic sysrq is
enabled on qubes, I guess I would have to test it while it is still working,
but if it is, it also didn't work.

It is not a temperature problem, they are far below the standard temperatures
even. I will run a memory test and report back if that can be the problem.

The entire system goes from "perfectly fine" to a state where the screen
looks normal, but the sound gets stuck in a one second long loop and the
system no longer responds to any keypres, the mouse doesn't react, it is
completely 100% frozen.
>
> This happens several times a day now and turning off the power is the only

I had temporary lockups that turned out to be related to a USB 3.0
(XHCI) controller and my USB mouse. Entire VMs would freeze until I
switched to Dom0 and back, IIRC. I changed some settings in BIOS so
everything was only EHCI and that fixed my problem.

It may not be anything in Qubes; It may be memory errors or an
overheating processor. Try running Memtest (freeware) for the memory.
Check for and blow out any dust buildup in your computer. I don't know
of an easy way to check temps within Qubes, but your BIOS ought to give
some indication.

[qubes-users] COMRESET failed error on installation of Qubes R3.2

2017-09-25 Thread h
Trying to install Qubes 3.2 on a Lenovo X1 20BT system.
When I select "test this media and install Qubes R3.2", the installer launches.
However I get a series of ata1: COMRESET failled (errno=-16) errors followed by
ata1:reset failed giving up. The installer progresses a bit more but end with
dracut: FATAL: CD check failed. I then have to do a hard reboot.

>From what I gathered on the web, the COMRESET error is not such a good sign
>and might mean my SSD is failing but the system is pretty new so that would be
>a bit surprising.

Is there some test I can run to rule out an imminent drive failure (if need be,
I have a spare live Ubuntu USB)?
Mainly however, how do I progress further with the Qubes install ?

Extra info:
I burned the Qubes ISO on a USB stick using Rufus in dd mode, I enabled VT-x
and VT-d in the BIOS as well as legacy boot only as well as Display memory=512.
After the failed install, I can still get into my windows install with no
issues.

Ok, so I restarted and the problem starting VMs has been resolved. I am most
likely technologically out of my depth with Qubes but that is how I typically
learn (I have ADHD and asperger's and an atypical learning style). I was
concerned that, not understanding the error well, it might replicate upon
restarting, leaving me with a command line significantly more intimidating than
those of the Ubuntu / Debian etc. systems that I am more used to. I wanted to
exhaust my options on the running, though limited, system before trying a
restart.

[qubes-users] Impressions of the Purism Librem 15v3 for Qubes

2017-09-25 Thread Sean Hunter
I want to start by saying I really like this laptop so far and it works great
for me in qubes 4.0. I’m a (very) long term linux user but new to qubes. For
the last 5 years I have used a macBook pro as my primary computer for personal
and work, and am using this to replace that first for personal stuff and dev
projects and then hopefully soon for my main work also. I also didn’t ever boot
pureOs (their debian spin) so can’t comment on what that’s like.

So a 15” mbp is my point of comparison and these are relatively minor issues
which don’t stop me from using the laptop for everything I need (so far):
they added a numpad (that I don’t use) so you’re not centered on the screen
when you type and there are extra keys to the right of the arrows. Annoying to
me but many people wouldn’t notice or might even like the numpad
It won’t boot qubes R3.2 for some reason so I have to run R4.0. That’s fine for
me although it means a somewhat rougher user experience as it’s not super
polished yet
The keys for screen brightness, volume etc are hooked up using dark magic that
doesn’t work in i3wm for some reason. On xfce they work just fine. At some
point I’ll try to figure it out and if you don’t use i3 you may not care
I haven’t got the acpi (or whatever it’s called now) settings quite right yet
so it doesn’t shut down properly - It shuts everything down but leaves the
screen backlight on, then I have to manually press and hold the power button
for it to actually shut down. Likewise I can hibernate it, but it doesn’t come
back from hibernation. Again, there’s probably a fix
I’m not crazy about the touchpad. It’s resonsive enough but the friction on the
surface is a little high. I guess macs have pampered me and I’ve become soft.
It won’t drive my super-wide external monitor at full resolution so I am
restricted to a “mere” 1900xsomething.

If you’re not familiar with this laptop, some of the points in its favour are:
1. Free software ethos: comes with core boot and the hardware is user
replaceable to an extent very unusual for a laptop
2. Security-minded: ME disabled, open-source bios and has hardware disable
switches for mic and wifi

Let me know if you have specific questions and I’ll try to address

It is really just a matter of how the templates are built. By default, a
generic file for repositories is included with release variable for current
current-testing etc. It would be much more work to separate everything
depending on the state of all others packages...

[qubes-users] xfce4-panel - Applications menu, no icons?

2017-09-25 Thread Jarle Thorsen
Having installed i3wm in Qubes 3.2, I still wanted the xfce4-panel:

I manually start it from the i3-config:
exec xfce4-panel --disable-wm-check

The funny thing is that none of the entries in the Applications menu have an
icon anymore?

They worked just fine with the default xfce desktop, and I see all the icons in
System Tools -> Application Finder.

Where should I start to look for a solution?

Thank you for your answer!

Although I'm not sure why these repos are not kept in current-testing
while not 100% ready (i.e. with RPMs packaged), I'm really glad that
fc26 is near.

My plan is to upgrade my actual templates instead of using new ones, but
still, the availability of RPMs will be key for both goals.

Hi,
It is just a preparation of Qubes repositories for building the template
(https://groups.google.com/d/topic/qubes-devel/l9xDmPXpNfg/discussion)

You can build the template if you want using my repos but it should be
available soon in the officials. I can send you if you want a specific config
conf for qubes-builder.

Best,

[qubes-users] System freezes several times a day

2017-09-25 Thread Jan Martin Krämer
Hi everyone,

I have been using Qubes 3.2 for a while. After my harddrive crashed I got a new
harddrive and had to reinstall Qubes and I think pretty much after that time it
started freezing. The entire system goes from "perfectly fine" to a state where
the screen looks normal, but the sound gets stuck in a one second long loop and
the system no longer responds to any keypres, the mouse doesn't react, it is
completely 100% frozen.

This happens several times a day now and turning off the power is the only
thing I can do. Reinstalling 3.2 from scratch didn't fix it.

I have no idea how to diagnose the problem so I need help with that. Which log
files should I provide, ...?

Best regards,
Jan

I am running Qubes 4.0 rc 1 on a librem purism 15v3. I believe (may be wrong)
that it comes with ME disabled. Seems a great laptop so far with a couple of
small annoyances which I’m happy to post to the list separately if people would
find that helpful.

[qubes-users] R3.2 fc26 yum repository

2017-09-25 Thread Alex
Hi all,
does anybody know why the fc26 yum repository has appeared at
https://yum.qubes-os.org/r3.2/current/vm/fc26 and does contain some
metadata but does not contain any RPMs?

This prompt my appVMs to show several "Software update available" and
"OS update available", but since there are no RPM files, I cannot
actually move to fc26 (which, incidentally, I would like to do :)
