[qubes-users] ThinkPad T480

2019-04-30 Thread ljul8047
Hello everyone, I think I will buy a Lenovo ThinkPad T480 since it has good
reviews here on the list but I can’t find out which processor to choose. Which
one do you think will work for Qubes and Whonix? I’m planning to get Qubes and
Whonix for light browsing such as accessing Facebook and Instagram through Tor,
no gaming, video streaming or anything like that.

- Intel Core i5-8250U Processor (6MB Cache, up to 3.40GHz).
- Intel Core i7-8550U Processor (8MB Cache, up to 4.00GHz).
- Intel Core i5-8350U Processor (6MB Cache, up to 3.60GHz).
- Intel Core i7-8650U Processor (8MB Cache, up to 4.20GHz).

Thank you for any reply.

According to the Hardware Compatibility List, the Intel NUC6i3SYK works with
the Qubes version 3.2 but my question is, does it work with the 4.0 version too?

Hi,

I'm using Dell 5590 with Intel Core i5-8250U, 16GB RAM and SSDs and
pretty happy with my Qubes 4.0.1. I use one Windows VM with 6GB, one
Linux Mint with 2GB and one VM based on Debian template.

Good luck!

Dont have this issue.
What templates are you using?
Do you have password set in gnupg?
Can you post gpg relevant sections from .muttrc

Had the same issue. I solved the issue by changing "--decrypt" to "-d".
Don't ask me why:

set pgp_decode_command="qubes-gpg-client-wrapper --status-fd=2 -d --batch %f"

[qubes-users] Post Installation Tasks not Performed

2019-04-30 Thread Gerhard Weck
Qubes OS version
R4.0.1

Affected component(s) or functionality
Installation from DVD
Brief summary
I tried to install Qubes R4.0.1 from DVD on two different PCs (ASUS Z170M-E D3
with Intel Core i5-6600 and HP 840 Elitebook with Intel i5-7600, both with VT-x
and VT-d) on to a SAMSUNG T5 USB-SSD with 512 GiB.

In both cases, the installation went through until the reboot, without error
messages. After booting, the normal Qubes login screen appeared, but the post
installation tasks (VM creation etc.) were skipped. So the resulting system
just had dom0 and no VMs and is not usable.

As marmarek pointed out, the post-installation wizard can be started manually
with sudo /usr/libexec/initial-setup/initial-setup-graphical.

In my case, the post-installation wizard terminated with a message "Error in
kickstart file /root/anaconda-ks.cfg at line 30 - invalid parameter value
--size=927.985.583984375".
This line and the following two lines had the size value as floating point
values instead of as integers. In the setup, I had specified manual
partitioning with 3 partitions (/boot as 1GB, / as 250GB, and swap as 20GB).
These values apparently got translated to 927.985.583984375, 238396.3623046875
and 19071.708984375, respectively. Dropping the fraction parts from these
values in the kickstart file, i.e. changing them to 927, 238396 and 19071,
respectively, allowed to execute the post-installation wizard without any error.

I hope this might help if you run into the same or a similar error.

You dont actually need to specify *any* decrypt command at all.

Debian sets use_gpgme by default. You could try explicitly:
set crypt_use_gpgme=no

2019-04-30 Thread Matthias Horn
I have a T480 with the i7-8550 and 32gb ram. It’s a nice and powerful laptop.

Everything I have used so for has worked out of the box for, except power
management.

I have the large auxiliary battery (advertised 27hrs, and I got that running
windows) with gives me about 3-4 hours running wines (which is ok).
I haven’t yet figured out of to fix the power management, so it runs hot and
has the poor battery life.

It seems to me that people interested in digital privacy not only find out

Their vision comes first, and privacy is sort of a consequence or a mean, a

As for the privacy part of it and if this is still a Qubes discussion group. I
was wondering if any of you have already been using it as your main OS and

Ok, that kinda worked.

Installed a directory under /var/lib/qubes/vm-templates, but the root.img is in
three parts and the private.img is missing. Can't add the template to the
manager.

What exactly is the private.img for in a template anyway?

As qubes principle is on making compartments of everything I wonder how you
guys have been using it in regards of browsers, search engine, mail clients,
cloud storage, etc.
I have been thinking about that and I had an ideia to separate every part of my
life in 4 boxes (social, online shopping, professional and personal) and use
different email, cloud storage, browser and search engine for each one.
For example :
Box 1: tutanota mail, pcloud storage, Firefox and ddg
Box 2 protonmail, mega storage, pale moon and searx
Box 3 disroot, woelkli storage, brave and swisscows
Box 4 riseup, tresorit storage, tor and qwant

Do you guys think that would work well with qubes?

Compartmentalizing is good. You could accomplish your design with Qubes,
but it's a little overly complex since Qubes by default isolates every
AppVM from every other AppVM. See
https://www.qubes-os.org/doc/architecture/ and
https://theinvisiblethings.blogspot.com/2011/03/partitioning-my-digital-life-into.html
for some examples.

Also, another problem I find with this OS is that until now it seems that is
kinda of a luck game for the OS to work on each laptop since they still don't
have any official suggestion for a machine in which the OS would surely work. I
don't even known which machine I should buy for that to work. In contrast, even
though it is simple, but the Tails OS is easy and I know it runs anywhere. For
that reason I have been using tails, until I can figure out a machine that will
work with qubes.

Unfortunately, no vendor has been able to meet the
https://www.qubes-os.org/doc/certified-hardware/ process under 4.0.

Also, just wondering, what do you guys do with your smart phones?? It seems
that sometimes we worry so much about our PC's, but then our smartphones keep
recording all of our lives.

I can neither confirm nor deny possession of such a device.

I dont know exactly what you have done.
Check the signature using rpm -K .
You'll need to import the Qubes signing key, and then you should see OK
as output of rpm -K command.

Then copy the package in to dom0, and install it using
sudo dnf install

That will create the template correctly, and add it to the manager.

The private.img in template is used for private.img in qubes created using
that template. So you can customise the template, and it
will be copied in to /home/user in such qubes.

Which litterally means what it says.

[qubes-users] Help! Windows 7 standalone vm doesn't have the right resolution for my moniter.

2019-04-30 Thread Ye Lin
Hi, guys. Please give me a little help to improve my windows VM. :)

I used 'sudo qvm-features --unset win7new video-model'. However, the only
available resolution in windows 7 is 2560 x 1600, 1920 x 1200, 1920 x 1080. I
have a monitor that prefer 2560 x 1440. So I just couldn't make it work
completely full screen. I tried to set video-model to 'xen', 'vga', etc..
nothing seems to help.

Any tips to help?

Btw, if anyone tried gaming on Windows 7 VM, could you tell me why I cannot
play games on it? I download a few games but they cannot start. Every time it
tries to the full-screen mode it just dead. Do I really need a PCI passthrough
a GPU? (which I don't have lol it's a laptop with no GPU.

Thank you!

That's an interesting device...I am sure Qubes os has some sort of backward
compatibility?
