[qubes-users] Keyboard and mouse stopped working after upgrade to 4.1.2

2023-10-18 Thread Günter Zöchbauer
More details in
https://forum.qubes-os.org/t/keyboard-and-mouse-non-functional-after-upgrade/21579

I already tried the usual suggestions.

Sorry for the brevity. I'm only on my phone because I can't access my
computer.

Re: [qubes-users] How to login in tty

2020-12-16 Thread Günter Zöchbauer
I wasn't even aware that I had an username there :D
In Qubes it's always just "user" and when I log in after restarting the
machine I can't remember to ever need to enter a username, just the
password.
User is probably already autofilled from previous logins.

But it worked. I tried with the username I usually use and I could log in.
Thanks!

Sometimes my KDE freezes but I can switch to TTY using Ctrl-Alt-F2
but I wasn't able to login with user "root" and password.
Should this be possible?

2020-04-13 Thread Günter Zöchbauer
I tried the predecessor NUC8i7 and it made a lot of noise every time it had
to do more than showing the plain desktop.

I'm back to a proper desktop PC where fans only start getting noisy when a

[qubes-users] Can't start apps from VM

2020-04-02 Thread Günter Zöchbauer
My development VM became quite slow because some kswapd0 (if I remember
correctly) running at 100% all the time.

I have my machine usually running 24/7, but I decided to restart to see if
this helps (after increasing assigned memory).

After I restarted the machine I wasn't able to start any app for this VM.
I modified the template quite a lot since I restarted last time, so I
wasn't too surprised.

I tried creating a new VM based on the same debian-10 template and all went
fine.

Then I went away and when I came back my PC showed the lock screen and was
frozen (I had this a few times in the past already).
So I had to restart again.

After this I couldn't start any application in the new VM as well.
I tried to start Gnome Terminal from dom0:terminal but nothing happens. No
error. The command just hangs until Ctrl-c.

I couldn't find any log file with hints about possible causes.

I can run the VM in debug mode and access the data from the tiny terminal
window.

Any ideas how to debug?

Thanks. Good to know about qrexec_timeout.

The disk was full.
I had added this line

qvm-volume extend Dev-2:private 10gb

in the script that creates the AppVM but had commented it out because I of
something I tried before and forgotten about it.

Seems to work fine for me (just tried only to launch and load google.com,
nothing more yet).

sudo apt install chromium

in a Debian-10-browser based template
and then an AppVM created based on that template
(I used Debian-10-browser because I also want Firefox)

"Refresh Applications" and add "Chromium Web Browser" to "Selected"
and then start from the menu

I wasn't able to figure out yet what the minimum set of packages is.
The description of the individual packages is quite minimalistic and I
haven't yet found any information about what packages are required for what
functionality.

I already started building my work environment in a template based VM and I
don't plan to invest more time into integrating my old VM.

The Xen command line is GRUB_CMDLINE_XEN_DEFAULT in /etc/default/grub

Thanks for the suggestions.

I'll check journalctl the next time it happens and also pay attention if
there is a delay.

I had more than one VM running every time.

Memory in dom0: is currently with a typical workload
KiB Mem : 3943504 total, 569480 free, 2147124 used, 1226900 buff/cache

journalctl shows
balance_when_enough_memory(xen_free_memory=27261583,
total_mem_pref=12447403622.42, total_available_memory=10625527248.58
left_memory=4055249111 acceptors_count=6

The machine has 32G and it shouldn't use much that yet.

It didn't even look like a crash. It looked like a proper reboot.

I have added noreboot=1 and will report back if I find anything new.

 Ok, I found that one.
"Run in debug mode" does that. I thought I already tried that before.
Also qvm-start-gui --force-stubdomain showed that window.

X isn't started in that window anymore and it shows only the output from
the boot progress, so this doesn't help.

I tried that now but run into problems.

When I run an application from the dom0 menu, the window shows only weird
patterns that change when I resize the window
like if the wrong driver for a graphics adapter were used.

When I start the VM the Debian boot screen with the console output about
the boot progress is shown,
but when it's done booting this window disappears.

Is there a way to prevent this window from disappearing?

Does this have any effect on Applications links?
Where does dom0 know for which user to fetch available applications
or does it only list globally available applications anyway?

Anything else where this might effect Qubes behavior?

[qubes-users] Some env variables like VMTYPE are only set for user "user" but not for root (sudo su)

2020-02-03 Thread Günter Zöchbauer
Where are these variables set?
What do I need to change to see them with sudo?

Re: [qubes-users] Integrate existing VirtualBox VM into Qubes

2020-01-31 Thread Günter Zöchbauer
Thanks a lot!

The suggested changes broke X11,
but after removing the changes, the KDE display settings suddenly showed
resolutions up to Full-HD which is alread a huge improvement.

When I tried to get higher I run into the same issue as
https://tutel.me/c/unix/questions/505863/qubesos+install+qubes+support+tools+in+hvm+to+fix+screen+resolution+and+copy+paste

I have yet to try installing Qubes tools.
Do you mean https://www.qubes-os.org/doc/templates/minimal/#debian?

Guest OS is Debian 10.

[qubes-users] Integrate existing VirtualBox VM into Qubes

2020-01-30 Thread Günter Zöchbauer
Hi,

I used to work in a VirtualBox VM.
Now I got a new machine and on that occasion I started fresh with with
Qubes OS (like it so far).

I want to keep using the existing Virtualbox VM in Qubes.
Perhaps I'll start with a new Qubes VM from scratch later if that provides
any benefits,
but for now I just want to be productive again.

I was able to migrate the VM and have it running in Qubes already, but only
the full desktop in a single host window. That's fine for now, but

the max guest resolution I'm able to configure is 1920x1080 on a 4k
host.

Is there a way to fix that?

Is there a way to make

- copy-paste between other AppVMs and this VM work?
- running individual apps in their own host windows work (like in other
Qubes VMs) without creating the VM from scratch?

Art there other things to consider?

Thanks!
