My wife and I use the alarm on the radio reliably (for about 6 months
now). The people who have the most issues use mysb. I say, if you
want to use the radio alarm, just run a computer 24/7. Its not a big
deal to do so --- some people make it seem like its the end of the
world. Frankly, with fios and cable speeds now, why would you want to
wait to boot a computer. I would leave my PC on 24/7 even without a
 squeezebox radio.

Then maybe Logitech should advertise it as an appliance that REQUIRES
you to run your own server on a separate computer in order to work.

Had I known that then I surely would not have spent a nickel on it.

Better a small appliance that needs a little power to run over a small
appliance and a computer on 24/7. I guess you aren't a huge fan of

[SlimDevices: Radio] Word from Logitech regarding the last firmaware update:

2010-05-25 Thread JWagner

http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=16170#c68

--- Comment #68 from Alan Young ayou...@slimdevices.com 2010-05-25
01:23:14 PDT ---
Here is a status report for those monitoring this bug:

When 7.5.0 was released there was both new firmware for Squeezebox
Radio and
new software on mysqueezebox.com. People started reporting that their
SB Radios
stopped playing and many attributed this to problems to the 7.5.0
firmware. It
seems highly likely that the actual cause was a bug introduced in to
the
mysqueezebox.com software. This bug was fixed on 17 May. Since then,
behaviour
should have reverted to that of 7.4.2. This is the key message in this
comment.

In the process of analysing the problems, we uncovered a number of
vulnerabilities in the interactions between a player and
mysqueezebox.com which
could, under some circumstances, cause playback to stop unnecessarily.
The SB
Radio (and other SP-based players including the SB Touch) is slightly
more
likely to be affected by these than are older players (Classic, Boom,
Duet,
etc.) because of small differences in timings used by the firmware. We
also
uncovered a couple of related bugs in the SP firmware. None of these
are
changes between 7.4.2 and 7.5.0.

Testing is currently under way for changes to both mysqueezebox.com and
the
firmware used for Radio and Touch to fix the identified bugs and
substantially
reduce the vulnerabilities. These fixes will be included in 7.5.1 and
should
represent an enhancement over 7.4.2 in this area.

I would recommend that you place the radio as low in the bathroom as
feasible since the warm moist air will tend to be higher in the room.
Also have the exhaust fan running.

[SlimDevices: Radio] Radio as alarm clock problems when synced with Touch

2010-05-25 Thread Peter Galbavy

I use my Radio as a bedside alarm clock. The normal alarm audio is
streamed BBC Radio 4 (yeah, yeah I know... but I am getting older).
It's worked pretty flawlessly for me since I got it and I was always
worried by other poster's problems.

With the SB3 on my downstairs system all was well. The idea being that
it starts playing the radio as an alarm but I can switch it off (power
button) and go downstairs turn the amp on and the SB3 was already
continuing the radio stream.

Now, since I got my Touch and did a sync to it I have been having
problems. When I hit the volume or main button to snooze it does, but
then will often come back with a very brief radio stream then goes to
the default musical alarm as if it's unable to connect to the
internet stream (via the NAS server). At this point another snooze
works but the display will now have the snooze / turn off alarm
display and will NOT leave it. The power button does nothing. Selecting
either option does nothing.

This morning I tried unsync from the Touch downstairs and the Radio
then restarted playing the BBC radio stream but the unit was otherwise
unresponsive.

Each time I have had to open the battery compartment and pull the plug.
After I do this the battery icon typically shows half charge, not full
as I would expect after only a few minutes unplugged from the charger
cable.

I have no unsynced and will see what happens tomorrow morning. It has
happened every time AFAICR since the Touch is in place.

All this is via a ReadyNAS NV+ running 7.5(.1?).

Because some people might not know that there is a very reliable
alternative.

I don't want to defend Logitech for promising/advertising that it all
works reliable without your own server.

But just lets be pragmatic (from a user point of view) - what are your
options when you can't give back the device ?

1) demand from logitech to fix it and wait until you're blue in your
mind
2) sell it on ebay
3) make it working because most of the problems are not in the firmware
but because of this damn unreliable mysb.com server.

The forum can't help you with 1) or 2).
But it can help you with 3)

Yes this is not how its supposed to be when you buy a product.
Still its your only chance make your freedom with your device now.

Using the server software fixes the problem in most cases. Yes, this in
NOT what you wanted to do. Bluegaspode pretty well sums up the options
you have.

Unless you give up and sell your radio you are going to have to wait
for Logitech to fix this. Yeah it is not fair, not right, false

Since it is what it is...using the server software is the best,

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Word from Logitech regarding the last firmaware update:

2010-05-25 Thread 0xdeadbeef

I consider all of this to be related. Radio and MYSB get in some error
state were they can't communicate properly or only think they can't and
then the stream stops without any of the sides taking a counteraction or
one of the other faulty events happens. E.g. to me an alarm stopping
after five seconds and an alarm changing to backup alarm after 5
seconds have the same root cause and only the result is slightly
different due to chaotic software design (lack of thread/event
synchronization etc.).
Besides, the last time they fixed the server side in February, this
cured all of these issues to a usable degree, not only the stopping of
streams. So either they introduced more bugs than they think or they
didn't properly fix the one they introduced in 7.5.0.

Just a statement of fact.

Your options are few. Sell the radio. Shelf the radio. Or live with it
as it is until it is fixed.

The forums are overrun with bitc*ing users upset with their radio. I am
quite willing to grant that their problems are legitimate. That said,
the bitc*ing fixes nothing. I, for one, get tired of reading it.

Running the server software will likely fix the problem. Some users
don't want to do it. Fine. But, constantly complaining and griping
about it is not going to change anything.

Personally, I find this forum much less friendly and enjoyable these
days. I try and help the users I can. But, no one is going to post a
magical fix for the problems people are having with the radio. Logitech
has to do that.
I have no doubt they are working on it. Those having a problem are just
doing to have to wait until it is fixed. Tough luck to be sure..but
that's just how it is.

While I agree with you, the radio is supposed to work using mysb.com.
I guess there are a few users that have a router and no computer. :)
Though I am not sure how they set up their router.

Most everyone has a computer they can use for the squeezebox server
software. I have a computer in my office I leave on 24/7 (win 7) It is
the BEST solution. That said, there are some users who want to use the
radio for online music alone and so they use mysb.com.

Logitech bears some responsibility for how this product was advertised.

This is how Logitech advertises the radio:

bYour all-in-one Wi-Fi music player#8212;no computer, no clutter,
and no limits.

The compact Logitech Squeezebox Radio works with your Wi-Fi network to
stream a world of crystal-clear music to any room you want. Just plug
it in and turn the dial to connect to an underground rock station in
Amsterdam, talk show in Sydney, sports coverage from Boston or BBC news
from London. Discover millions of tracks from online services like
Last.fm and Pandora. With its built-in high-fidelity amplifier and
speakers, you'll enjoy room-filling sound#8212;all from a little music
player that fits easily on a corner of your kitchen counter, bedroom
night table, or desk in the den. /b

It clearly says NO COMPUTER. So the complaint that some people have is
valid.

But, once they ask for help and find out there is no fix at this

[SlimDevices: Radio] Radio fine with MSB, can't connect to SBS

2010-05-25 Thread adamslim

I've just moved my Radio into a different room, and gone to wifi.
Signal is pretty strong, and it works perfectly with internet radio via
MySqueezebox.

However, when I try to play my music, or switch it to the local server
via the web interface, it fails to see the server. Every other SB in
the house is fine, some wired and some wireless. On the device it says
to get a server, and the web interface offers to connect it to the
server, but just doesn't do so when I select yes.

Any ideas? I did a factory reset on the unit, thinking it had randomly
got into a fug, but that didn't help. I can't think even where to start
with the problem.

I think the reasons are overstated and not well-thought out (not to
mention people being scared by the word server -- hence I prefer to
call it running an application on your home computer):

1. Noise: I have a large desktop PC. Its fans are not audible above
ambient background sounds from more than a foot or so away. Most
modern computers are not particularly noisy anymore.

2. Energy/cost of electricity: As explained, these costs are typically
minimal as long as a monitor is set to sleep after a period of
inactivity. It is not more green to have people using mysb
exclusively, thus requiring logitech to expand its energy use for a
commercial data center;

3. WAF: For the reasons above, WAF should not be a factor -- divorce
is an option too ;)

Stop. Just stop. Plenty of people have plenty of reasons (noise, energy,
WAF, cost of electricity, etc.) not to run a server 24x7, so just stop,

This little device called SheevaPlug mentioned somewhere else in this
forum (which has got very good support by the community here) doesn't
have any noise (no fans), doesn't consume much energy (3W on idle) and
has the best WAF I know of (its a plug, its sort of invisible - what
could have a better woman acceptance factor than invisible stuff?).

In the meantime my wifes even enjoys listening to Squeezeboxes (she of
course (!) complained a lot about the Logi-Stuff I bought). THAT's what
I call WAF.

I converted this plug also to being my new printserver - so I'm even
saving energy because I don't have to turn on the 'big' computer just
to print.
It also acts as my NAS - and again I don't have to turn on my big
computer if I need access to some files from my laptop.
And I even safed money compared to other solutions.

So yes - maybe you didn't want to spend 150$ more (SheevaPlug + HD). I
agree.
But money is the only reason I accept for not having a 24x7 server that
could suit your needs in so many other good ways.
It might even take you one more weekend to set up. But than again -
your life will be at least a year longer if you just do it and stop
pushing your anger about logitech. Life's just not worth it.
And logitech for sure doesn't deserve shortening your life.

We get ripped off by big companies and their adverts all the time. But
at least with the Logi-devices I was able to help myself.
All this of course shouldn't prevent you from giving bad amazon
reviews, write letters to review magazines and all that.
Take your anger and use the channels that matters to higher management
!

But I think this forum is the least place where you should place your
complaints in my opinion. Here we talk about workarounds and try to
help to make the best of what we bought.
Here we are happy that people like erland put their life into giving us
all the stuff logitech isn't capable of (hope they as well push his
donate button regularly).

And for alarms: I think hoping that it will ever work with MySB.com is
too much. Apparently with their current architecture (communicating
with mysb.com at alarm time) all their sold devices run a coordinated
DenialOfService-Attack against their own servers. Each day.
Sure you can wait for the big rearchitecture to come - but don't think
that it will be in less than six month (if they dare to do it at all).

2010-05-25 Thread 0xdeadbeef

Hell, this is so annoying. Why can't certain Squeezebox fans stop to
spam every thread that names the blatant bugs with their we know
better what you want attitude?

And heck, if Logitech ignores all the unhappy users and doesn't show
any interest in fixing the issues for such a long time, it's not very
surprising that customers use the forum to utter their frustration.
Telling them that they don't have a problem or that they should shut up
is not a very sensible approach. Finally fixing the issues after all
these months would effectively stop people from complaining though.

You would think that the Logitech management finally realizes that the
number of complaints in the forum and in Amazon reviews simply reflects
the situation. And honestly, demanding to move all these threads to a
faraway complaints forum that can be easily ignored is a slap in the
face of everybody who bought a SB Radio because he believed in
Logitech's promises.

While I run a music server, I appreciate that, with the Radio in

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] I am getting totally fed up!

2010-05-25 Thread mpower9

For people on this thread who refused to participate in bugzilla process
(http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=16170) and thereby be kept
up-to-date, this is the latest up-date from the Logitechs:

Alan Young 2010-05-25 01:23:14 PDT

Here is a status report for those monitoring this bug:

When 7.5.0 was released there was both new firmware for Squeezebox
Radio and new software on mysqueezebox.com. People started reporting
that their SB Radios stopped playing and many attributed this to
problems to the 7.5.0 firmware. It seems highly likely that the actual
cause was a bug introduced in to the mysqueezebox.com software. This
bug was fixed on 17 May. Since then, behaviour should have reverted to
that of 7.4.2. This is the key message in this comment.

In the process of analysing the problems, we uncovered a number of
vulnerabilities in the interactions between a player and
mysqueezebox.com which could, under some circumstances, cause playback
to stop unnecessarily. The SB
Radio (and other SP-based players including the SB Touch) is slightly
more likely to be affected by these than are older players (Classic,
Boom, Duet, etc.) because of small differences in timings used by the
firmware. We also uncovered a couple of related bugs in the SP
firmware. None of these are changes between 7.4.2 and 7.5.0.

Testing is currently under way for changes to both mysqueezebox.com and
the firmware used for Radio and Touch to fix the identified bugs and
substantially reduce the vulnerabilities. These fixes will be included
in 7.5.1 and should represent an enhancement over 7.4.2 in this area.

I've had the same thoughts as you earlier but I have to say that I've
changed my mind a bit. The physical size and advertising clearly
results in that many people are going to use the Radio in the bedroom
and when used in the bedroom a reliable alarm is maybe the most
important feature.

However, I think the most critical bug is MySB reliability and the
randomly stopped audio streams when using MySB. Hopefully that part
should be soon solved according to Alan's status report in bugzilla.

iPhone;550598 Wrote:

The Squeezebox was designed to work best when using a PC/Server running
SBS. Will it 'work' without one logged into mysb.com, sure it will. Will
using mysb.com ever be as reliable as running a dedicated SBS machine
(PC, Server, NAS, SheevaPlug, Laptop), never, not even if every bug and
 complaint were fixed tomorrow.

You are correct that it works better with a local PC/server but I
really believe Logitech has designed it to work better with MySB.com.
One example is that during the beta tests we had a lot of discussions
regarding the initial setup process and it was very clear that Logitech
wanted it to be optimized for users without a local PC/server with the
result that it doesn't work as good as it could for people with a local
server. Logitech is very dedicated to make sure MySB works, in many
cases I think it's a lot more important for them than making sure your
local server works.

However, at the moment it's clear that they have failed in their
intentions regarding this because at the moment it works better with a
local server.

iPhone;550598 Wrote:

For again, there are other people and technologies involved that are
nowhere near fault proof. There is the Internet connection (all of
them, not just your home one), the mysb.com servers, ones modem, ones
network, and everything else. So look at what is really involved and
stop calling a Squeezebox on mysb.com an alarm clock for it is NOT! To
many things can go wrong to cause an alarm not to sound.

That's not the fault of MySB, it's the alarm functionality that's
designed incorrectly mainly due to inheritance from the older
Squeezebox products. It would be possible to make the alarm
functionality less dependent on MySB or even not dependent on a
server/MySB at all, it's just a matter of changing the alarm handling
logic.

And nobody give me that Energy/Environmentalist crap about leaving a
Mac Mini/DIY Atom/Fit-PC2 on all the time when it uses only 6 to 23
watts (SheevaPlug 3W). All your TVs are plugged in, the picture might
be off, but its sucking down electricity when you think its off or it
wouldn't come on instantly when you press On. I'll bet most of you have
Central Heat/AC too. As well as other things that run 24/7 that one
 never even thinks about.
We really should not critique people that wants to care for our planet,
every watt counts even though some things might be pretty small when you
look at the big picture. However, you are right that there are a lot of
better solutions than running a 100W server 24/7.

A DIY server or a sheevaplug works really good if you are able to set
it up but for some people it's too advanced. I suspect a Vortexbox
appliance might be the best solution for people that want something
that just works and is easy to setup but that will make it a bit more
expensive. I understand that some people don't want to spend
additionally $300-400 to make their $199 fancy alarm clock to work
reliably. $99 for a sheevaplug might be acceptable but it's too
advanced to setup for some people.

Pushing the volume knob is supposed to work, it worked for me this
