I like this comparison as it gives a good example why people expect the
alarm to work even though the logitech device might be a streaming
device in the first place.

Anyway - lets get back constructive again.
As some people here (and also in other threads) have pointed out, that
alarms also work together with mysqueezebox.com.
So as a user forum our task here is to find out, what the differences
are to those where it doesn't work (as complaints and disputes don't
really help the matter).

Unfortunately both users that where asked to provide further
information failed to do so - noone will be able to help. For the rest
of people using alarms together with MySB.com (and who are interested
in a working solution) please do the following:

- take a look at ciarmer posts. First thing you should do is to
workaround this turns itself off problem. The official explanation
  of this workaround is here:
  http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=16295#c19 . As there was
a patch commited to the bug report there is hope that this annoying
  bug will vanish soon
- make sure to configure your alarms ONLY directly on the Radio.
Don't use the possibilities on mysqueezebox.com (or iPeng or other
  remotes) to configure alars.
- Use an alarm time off the hour (i.e. 6:53 instead of 7:00)
- Play around with different Radio Streams (at least to find out if
your problem probably is only related to your stream). If you use
Pandora try some time without Pandora (again not as a final solution
but to see if its just some time lags that confuse your alarm).

If you took these steps and your alarm is still failing, please provide
us with more information:

- what do you mean by 'failing': is the Radio staying completely
silent (which I don't believe) or is the fallback alarm playing
  instead of your wanted stream
- which stream do you use
- what is your alarm time
- what country are you living in ?

[SlimDevices: Radio] Beta hardware - still OK?

2010-07-18 Thread robinbowes

Hi,

I just dug out my Radio beta unit to go in the garage. I've not used it
for a while, and when it fires up I get a message saying something like
Beta hardware - some functions may not work.

After a firmware update, it seems to be working just fine.

My question: is there anything specific that won't work with the beta
hardware? Will the battery pack work with it?

Thanks,

R.

PS. I'm well impressed with the sound from such a small unit - kudos to
the designers. Ever thought of building a set of audiophile-grade active
speakers??

AFAIK, the only functionality difference in Beta radio's vs
production/retail Radio's is the battery will not work on a beta unit.
Been using my beta Radio daily since entering the beta program and I've
yet to find a function it cannot perform.
Beta units are hardware version 1, production/retail units are hardware
version 5.
What hardware components (beyond battery circuits) are different
between a 1 or a 5, I do not know.

Why not send it back and get a production unit. Its bad form to keep
beta units out in the wild. They need to go to the recycle shredder so
some consumer doesn't accidentally get one a few years down the road.

Some have chosen to do just that. Others, like myself, are waiting for
the battery pack availability before turning in our beta units.
Seems the latter is a bit less of a hassle for the person handling the
beta trade ins.
For me, absent buying a battery pack myself, I gain no real added
functionality, so waiting makes more sense for me as well.

There were a few more posts to bug 16295 today. They included a few
consolidations of other bugs as duplicates of the 16295 bug. These
included some of the alarm problems.

I agree that we are potentially on the verge of getting a fix for a
number of the issues being experienced by users including the random
turn on/turn off and alarm problems.

I think this is critical, but it's not that simple. If you're not
using SB Server and not disabling the option to sync with
mysqueezebox.com in SB Server's advanced settings, then setting up an
alarm on the SB itself will automatically sync the alarm with
mysqueezebox.com. The alarm on that website has fewer options and if
you're trying to wake up to something that's not on its short list of
sounds then you have problems. Maybe you get what you want, maybe you
get the default sound, maybe you get a few seconds of one and then the
other, maybe they interfere with eachother out and you get nothing.

I have interpreted this to mean the Standby/OFF should not be used.
What I have done is change the Stop screensaver to Digital Clock
(Black). Digital Clock (Black) is the default screensaver for OFF.

When I'm finished listening to any stream, I hit the pause button and
then hold the pause button for a second to go into Stop mode. At this
point, the stream is Stopped The stop indicator is shown in the lower
left corner. After 30 seconds (which can be changed, I believe), the
Digital Clock (Black) is shown so it looks like it would normally look
if you had used Standby/OFF. From this status, you can turn a stream
back on in the normal way (i.e. by hitting a preset or however else you
would normally tune in a stream).

This is working well for me.

If that's the case then if you use the Radio in a sync group another
thing you might want to check is the setting for the Radio under
Synchronize Synchronize Power. Make sure it's set to 'Power off/on
separately'. I often use Off/Standby as a quick way to kill playback
on my sync group as I'm heading out the door.

What an unfortunate decision it was to rely on myqueezebox.com for such
stupidly basic functionality on the Radio and Touch. That a subtle bug
like this could cause such havoc is sobering.

Another way to work around the bug would be to block mysqueezebox.com
at your firewall, which I've recommended for quite a while. If the
erratic and random behavior that people are seeing on the Radio were
attributed to a virus, people would kill for a firewall solution that
would block it. To date mysqueezebox.com integration is worse than a
virus due to all the foul ups in the software. Here are the IP
addresses to block:

66.151.159.227 (US west)
66.150.114.115 (US east)
89.202.121.131 (Europe)

If you're using mysqueezebox.com (or SB server with sync enabled), the

can't sync everything correctly since the choice of alarm sounds on the
