Full ack except for the button thing. You've got more buttons on the
main screen than iPeng and with the exception of the +/- ones I don't
believe any of your buttons are bigger.
It's just that - as you already said - if you spend 3/4th of the screen
estate for other things than actual menu content you can use that to
calm down the appearance a lot :)

Don't forget the Transporter in that list.

Also, from another perspective, all of the above devices, plus the
Transporter and even the SliMP3, can be sync'd with each other to play
the same music from a local LMS. The UE Smart Radio cannot sync with any
of them.

Other than the UE logo on the front, how is the UE Smart Radio different

Unknown. The presence of the undocumented infrared receptor makes me
wonder if, for reasons of economy or existing parts, the device is
electrically identical, but for all I know there may be significant
internal changes. Would be interesting to try putting Squeezebox Radio
firmware on.

JJZolx wrote:

It depends, officially it doesn't work.

Unofficially, if you run it from source code from the 10.0 branch and
start it with the slimserver.pl instead of ueml.pl, it seems to work at
least partly to play music from it both using a Squeezebox and a UE
Smart Radio. Just note that this is likely a startup mode which Logitech
never officially will support, but it's currently available if running
from source. I'm not sure how the Windows exe installation works, I'm
guessing it only offers you to start in the UEML mode.

Of course, even if starting UE Music Library server this way it doesn't
mean that the players can act together, there is no remote control of UE
Smart Radio available using traditional Squeezebox remote control apps
and you can't control it through the web interface, so in in reality,
it's more like a way to use a single server software for two completely
separate player systems. It could possibly be an alternative if your
computer doesn't have enough horse power to run both LMS and UE Music
Library but otherwise you will probably be better of running a LMS
instance and UE Music Library instance on the same computer.

It works it reboots itself before the alarm time is up , given that
there is any power left in the battery .

But not if you turned it *really* of by holding down the powerbutton for
a while .

Re: Review: Logitech UE Smart Radio the last Squeezebox?

2012-09-26 Thread didjean

Once again, I don't understand the logicals behind all this.

I can understand they want to simplify the user experience
I can also understand the rebranding from Squeezebox to UE

But having exactly the same piece of hardware, having a cut-down LMS
that is not compatible with Squeezebox is so stupid. It creates
confusion, it makes good old client pissed off. It's just a cheap way of
trying to do new stuff with old stuff.

Why not making their new devices compatible with LMS? Why not having a
standard user mode and an advanced user mode?

Moreover I have not a lot of friends who have subscribed to a internet
music service. So the always connected to Internet approach is a huge
mistake imho.

This is NOT a squeezebox. It's a fakebox.

Yes, there's really a disconnect issue with marketing. They don't
understand that LMS/UEML is _not_ like any desktop application, but that

it is a server. They don't want to hear it so badly (server is too
 geeky),

I don't supposed then they'll be too interested in FreeBSD LMS
